Bags filled with speakers
« on: December 02, 2020, 02:02:09 PM »

Hey fellas!
So I just purchased a 2018 CVORG in Gunship Gray.  Awesome bike.  My issue is the former owner was an intense audiophile and he put these huge subwoofers in the saddlebags.

Don't get me wrong, the things sound incredible but I'm one of those weird guys who actually travels on his bike.  I use my saddlebags to put stuff in.  I'm less concerned with sounding good than I am feeling good.

All that said, I'm hoping to find someone who has either the same color bike as me who'd want to trade their bags with me or field some suggestions from you guys on what else I should look to do.

The subwoofers appear to be permanently mounted in place so taking them out isn't an option.  I could simply toss these and buy new bags but that would seem awfully wasteful to me.

Thanks for any suggestions folks!

I'm with you T. Those bags are useless now. Good for a bar hopper though. I don't even use my stereo. The pipes are my music.

I looked at the pics.  What makes the subs permanently mounted?

easy to remove subs. Will just need to re tune audio system after removing which is no big deal. Any quality stereo shop can fix you up very inexpensively. after removing can put some bag liners in so nothing falls out of the holes cut in bags if that is a concern

Well I went and looked again and it looks like I may be mistaken.  I thought they were bolted in and then epoxied but taking a closer look, my old eyes may have been playing tricks on me.  So perhaps I can simply unbolt them...  The plot thickens!

Dude you may have just saved my ass a ton of trouble.  I didn't even think about bag liners!  My biggest concern is that the PO drilled holes in the bags to let the sound through so I figured the bags were ruined from a weather/waterproof perspective.  How did I not think of bag liners?   :nixweiss:

Thank you very much for your suggestion - I'm going to get to work on finding some today - are there any out there that you've had good luck with?  I'm wondering if perhaps I should also attach a thin sheet of plastic or vinyl on the inside wall where the holes were just to help keep the weather out before I put the liners in...

Thanks again!

I'm going to try patching the holes like this guy does - https://www.webbikeworld.com/repairing-motorcycle-saddle-bags/

Some ABS glue filled in and allowed to dry?  We'll see...

I’d definitely try to patch the holes (you don’t want all that brake dust and nasty road grime getting in) even if it looks bad it’ll be on the inside facing the wheel and you never see it if you put bag liners in.

Great ideas! Cheaper than new bags + paint.

Just wanted to update everybody - thank you for your advice.  The subs are now out of the bags.  It was such an amateur bs job that was done.  The subs were scabbed to plywood that was drywall-screwed through the exterior of the saddlebag into the wood.  Then the holes that were drilled so the sound could come through let tons of water in the bags when I rode through a small shower.  The bags are likely going to be about 20lbs lighter now that the subs and the water have been removed.

In order to waterproof the bags, I'm experimenting with a couple of approaches.  One, I'm thinking of taping the outside of the bags, laying the bags so that the taped side of the holes are against the workbench and pouring Oatey Black ABS cement into the holes and allowing it to cure.  I've read about many folks repairing ABS plastic with an ABS slurry and/or cement.

The other approach is to use an Oatey epoxy fix-it stick and just stuff the holes with the putty and allow it to harden.

Thanks again for the advice fellas, it's much appreciated.

Hard to believe that the previous owner would have installed the speakers that way and probably felt he did a good job

When I saw the drywall screws, I didn't know whether to $hit or go blind.

Wow, what a nightmare. With your trial and error fixing your bags it will help others with the same problem.. :2vrolijk_21:

Appears he was not only an amature mechanic, but an amature audiophile as anyone who know about the bass output knows it is not directional and it is feeling more than a sound. So drilling holes to let the "sound" out is a total waste.
