Hey MR, welcome aboard. The old crappy leather saddlebag lock question. HD sells a lock set, that you can get key-matched, for the '07 SERKs. I'm not convinced they're very effective. I bought a set of used hard bags for mine. Finding someone to match the '07 paint scheme is the fun part. Good luck with your new SERK. Enjoy the site. ;) Hoist! 8)

I will be picking up the locks for my bags tomorrow. I had a set on my last RK custom.  they work fine.
you can break into the hard bags just as easy as you can into the leather ones.

after all,  locks are only good at keeping honest people out. if someone wants in,, nothing will stop them.

harleyteam,
I agree, locks keep honest people honest.  What was the turn around for them to make the locks to fit your keys?

getting the HD locks,  they are made to your key code, so you only need the use of one key.  ordered them 2 weeks ago,  and was told yesterday that they are packed and on route to my dealer.

they work fine , you push the key in and turn, then just pull it out. :apple:

I order a set of locks for my '07 FLHRSE3. I installed one of the locks on the left side bag first, just ot make sure I would be happy with it. Well - I wasn't. I was very disappointed with the look and finish. Plus, they hit up against the painted filler piece that is installed between the bags and the rear fender. I took the lock off and put everything in a bag and in a drawer. They won't be going back on. I'll just not keep anything in the bags that I can't live without. I would think that with everything that Harely cooks up for these things - they could do a litter better with these.

Nice to see you again RGL. This is interesting! Now what? HT, you've always seemed to think they were OK. I wouldn't mind them, even if they're not the best security. Something's better than nothing. Seems to be a discrepency on the fit and quality though. HT, do you think they might mount differently on the SERK than your RK, without the Saddlebag Fillers? Maybe a follow-up after you install them? ;) Hoist! 8)

yes, they tell you to mount them at the back.  worked fine on my 05custom.

but I'm going to try and put them up front where the button is now,, and see how that works.

Will dealer sell hard bags? Would they fit without to much modification? I know the paint match would be tough.

Guy that used to work at San Diego H-D made a better lock for leather bags He left to pursue his buisness Als Custom Parts or something like that. I've got a card somewhere. If I can find it I'll post the info here

That would be helpful B as the stock ones leave much to be desired and there didn't seem to be an alternative. If you found a better one, there's a bunch of us who would be interested! Thanks. Hoist! 8)

I have emailed this seller on eBay about his locks and he claims they will also work on our FLHRSE3 bags. I just do not know if I like the look of the lock tumbler out front.

That actually looks pretty good!

B B, is this the leather saddlebag lockset you were referring to?

HarleyTeam, how does this look compared to the HD set you got.

Any feedback on this would be nice. I think I like this.

I've installed a couple sets of these before.  They go on without much unexpected difficulty and work ok.  You'd end up with an extra piece of chrome trim that you don't have to begin.  Might even see if the mftr was (or might be interested in) working something up for the new bags specifically.

Wow Don, that's kinda cool too. Thanks! I didn't realize there was any other choices for this besides HD. Maybe they can do something special for us. I feel another survey and Group Buy coming on!

What do you think guys. Is there enough interest in this to see if they'll make some kind of Screaming Eagle logo lock? Let's hear! ;) Hoist! 8)

Have put those on two RK Classics Howie.  If memory serves the first one took 2 hours and the second took 45 minutes or so.  So pretty typical for a straighforward installation.  Nothing really tough about them at all.

That outer bezel they offer that holds the tumbler is in a shape and size to generally and unobtrusively replace the trim part on the RKC saddlebags.  No other reason for it to be that size and shape though.  The lock and inside parts would be universal to the application.  So can't think of any reason that some other outer trim couldn't be used just as easily so long as it's machined to accept the lock.  For that matter there's nothing on the SERK saddlebags in the area this would mount.  So it might look ok as just an additional bit of ornament.

Looks interesting enough. Even more appealing if it is modified to match somehow.  :huepfenjump3:

I would definitely be interested in something like this. Way better than the standard HD offering.

Bring it on.

got mine mounted on the inside.  I just removed the stock button, and put in the lock, tilted slightly upward and to the front. just had to drill 1 small hole, and everything mounted nicely. the nice thing about the HD ones,, you can get the key to match your serk key at no extra charge. total cost 69.95

Are the leather bags on the Road King Classic larger than the  leather bags on the new SERK? If so how much larger? How would they compare in size to the hard bags that would fit the new SERK? TIA, jj.

I didn't know they were smaller than the Classic. No wonder they're virtually useless for a long trip. If I could only find someone who thinks they can match the paint for the B/I SERK, I can get them hard bags on. I think the bike would look so much better too. ;) Hoist! 8)

Howie,,  have you tried the hard bags on the bike yet ?

the classic bags seem to be a little higher then the serk bags,  but to be honest,, I've never compared the two next to each other.

I only get to use one bag on my bike anyway.  does what I need. :apple:

Hey Dennis, aren't you in Daytona? I haven't even taken the bags out of the box yet! I should probably check for fit before I paint them, huh? ::) I couldn't pass them up for what I paid for them. I figured if they fit, great! If they don't, I'll easily sell them for what I paid for them. I'm hoping they fit. I'll check this weekend and let everyone know once and for all, whether hard bags fit on an '07 SERK, without any modifications! ;) Hoist! 8)

Going from hard bags to leather bags you'll have to adjust the top brackets.  The holes aren't in the same place.

Thanks Don, adjusting the brackets are no big deal. I really haven't been thinking about it too much. Just have them sitting around my garage for now. I'll check it this weekend. I probably should know if they're viable or not! Hoist! 8)

Does the HD site list hard bags for SERK? I have looked a couple of times and can't find them. Also any problem with the hard police bags fitting on an 07 SERK? Have seen a couple of these on ebay but wasn't sure of the fit or if there would be other problems. Thanks in advance, JJ.

Hey JJ, HD doesn't offer them painted to match our bikes. Why use the Police bags, with the 2-piece design, when you can use regular RK Hard Bags? I picked up a used set and am looking to get them painted now. I forgot to check the fit today, but I don't see why they wouldn't fit. Don says I might have to adjust the bracket at the fender struts. No biggie. Getting someone to match the paint has been the tricky part. I'm still looking for someone who says they can do this. Anyone? Hoist! 8)

Howie, Thanks for the response. I figured HD would not have matching hard bags for our bikes but I was just trying to find any hard bags for a RK on their site and could not find them. Wanted to see what new price was in case I did find a used set to get some idea as to what a fair price for used ones might be. Didn't know anything about the "two piece" design for the police bags. Would you please explain what this is? I had noticed the caps on the police bag tops and was told those were used to open them. Wasn't sure why they were designed that way or if that would be a problem. Is that somehow related to the "two piece" design you mentioned. As always, many thanks, JJ.

They have latches on the end to help lock the lids down. They have a black knob on top for quick removal of the whole top cover. That's how they used to be anyway. This design is instead of the usual hinges and latches, like on regular touring bikes. I bought a used set from a Gold SERK, without hardware. I have to still get the hinges, latches and locks. But they only cost me $200 for both. Like I said, the paint's gonna be the tricky part. Hoist! 8)

I should have read this thread a little closer before YESTERDAY.  I installed the locks per the instructions (dumb a$$) and sure enough, they hit up against the painted filler piece that is installed between the bags and the rear fender.

I'm a little indecisive about what to do now.   :nixweiss:

twojay, it was the HD lock set for $69 (46287-04).

I think I'm going to take my dremel tool and notch out part of the lock.  For someone else installing this kit I'd recommend following Harleyteam and installing it in the front.  But I think you can install it toward the rear as directed in the instructions, just install it as high as possible.  Follow the included template for the drill pattern, just raise the pattern a little higher.

Going from hard bags to leather bags you'll have to adjust the top brackets.  The holes aren't in the same place.

Here's a quick tip. Leave the brkts loose and attach the bags with the pins. Once you've got the bags settled on the rubber clips on the bottom and in place, tighten the bolts. It makes going from hard shell to leather a real easy chore vice a royal pain.

Hoist, what do you think about having the hard bags covered with leather instead of painting them?  You said you like to cut against the grain, and that would definitely be doing that!

Thanks, great idea. I saw Bill Wall do that to a set on one of those bike shows. You need a reeal good leather man for that. I think it will be a lot more expensive too. Do you know someone? I would definitely be interested, but I'd have to find the right guy at the right price. Otherwise they're going in for paint at the end of the month. Leather wrapping with the engraved flames! Great idea Travelin'. If you know someone, let me know. You got me interested now! ;) Hoist! 8)

I was looking at some aftermarket leather bags and when I inquired as to whether or not they would fit a SERK I was told they would fit a RK Classic but not a RK Custom. Does anyone know if a bag  that will fit a RK Classic will fit a SERK ? tia , jj.

If Classics can convert to hard bags, and hard bags fit the SERK then they are all interchangeable.  Same mounting on all, although you made need to adjust the top latch pieces which is easy.   :bananarock:

Put them on last night.  I greatly appreciate the info you provided.  Did you end up putting the blacK inner cover on?  I managed to install them to avoid an item inside jamming it up while locked.

Thanks again, great site.     :) ;) ;D

Did you order a set of those new SE 110 labels for the heads?
