got mine mounted on the inside.  I just removed the stock button, and put in the lock, tilted slightly upward and to the front. just had to drill 1 small hole, and everything mounted nicely. the nice thing about the HD ones,, you can get the key to match your serk key at no extra charge. total cost 69.95
Harleyteam, Thanks for the info re mounting. Was it the HD lock that you referred to? If HD what is the part no.? If other where is it listed? TIA, JJ.

I should have read this thread a little closer before YESTERDAY.  I installed the locks per the instructions (dumb a$$) and sure enough, they hit up against the painted filler piece that is installed between the bags and the rear fender.

I'm a little indecisive about what to do now.   :nixweiss:
Dereck, Which locks were you installing and bro, sorry for the problems. Thanks, JJ.

twojay, it was the HD lock set for $69 (46287-04).

I think I'm going to take my dremel tool and notch out part of the lock.  For someone else installing this kit I'd recommend following Harleyteam and installing it in the front.  But I think you can install it toward the rear as directed in the instructions, just install it as high as possible.  Follow the included template for the drill pattern, just raise the pattern a little higher.

Going from hard bags to leather bags you'll have to adjust the top brackets.  The holes aren't in the same place.

Here's a quick tip. Leave the brkts loose and attach the bags with the pins. Once you've got the bags settled on the rubber clips on the bottom and in place, tighten the bolts. It makes going from hard shell to leather a real easy chore vice a royal pain.

Hoist, what do you think about having the hard bags covered with leather instead of painting them?  You said you like to cut against the grain, and that would definitely be doing that!

Thanks, great idea. I saw Bill Wall do that to a set on one of those bike shows. You need a reeal good leather man for that. I think it will be a lot more expensive too. Do you know someone? I would definitely be interested, but I'd have to find the right guy at the right price. Otherwise they're going in for paint at the end of the month. Leather wrapping with the engraved flames! Great idea Travelin'. If you know someone, let me know. You got me interested now! ;) Hoist! 8)

I was looking at some aftermarket leather bags and when I inquired as to whether or not they would fit a SERK I was told they would fit a RK Classic but not a RK Custom. Does anyone know if a bag  that will fit a RK Classic will fit a SERK ? tia , jj.

If Classics can convert to hard bags, and hard bags fit the SERK then they are all interchangeable.  Same mounting on all, although you made need to adjust the top latch pieces which is easy.   :bananarock:
