Living in the country setting has its advantages, no neighbors, set off from the road and wildlife....well, as howie would say eff the ... oh nevermind...

I was out working on the truck when I heard this knocking noise...seemed to be coming from my shed...started walking over to it and just as I got there a bird flew away...here is what I found that woody had done (hole is about 2-3" outside tapering to 1.5" inside:

Then there is phil...as in punxatawny phil...the small hole at the top occurred when I stepped on the ground looking at the big hole. At grass level, it is 3' wide. We are starting to fill it with used cat litter!

Is this the culprit?

Have these around my place. Don't often see them up at the house -- usually out in the woods. There have been a few times they have tried to start working on the end of the house.... poor things died of lead poison

mine was Blue for the most part...and i have the capability and skill to inflict lead poisoning also...but living in MA there are too many restrictions...plus I live to close to the police station...

As a rule Woodpeckers drill into trees to get at ants, grubs and other insects which have bored their way into the wood although they do create a nest in a hollow tree in this fashion. They're pretty smart at figuring out what's up with a tree from the timbre of their knocking LOL Anyway, Take your pick what "Woody" is up to at your place. Hoefully he's not after powder post beatles or termites. Sort of poisoning them, I have no idea how you drive off woodpeckers. As to "Phil ", dog fur is the best way to rid yourself of him. As in Caddy Shack, every time you fill in one hole, three new ones appear. If you don't have a long haired dog yourself, find a friend or neighbor that does and offer to brush the dog for free fur. Place the fur around any holes you see and Phil will be off looking for a place far away from Fido.

I would rather have the carpenter ants in the shed as opposed to the house...so my guess is that the bird is eating them...as for the mice in the shed, I occasionally blow them out of the garden tractor. They did ruin one of Anne's gardening glove that has been Idle

for years.

No long haired dogs available. Cat litter for now. Hope his other hole are in the surrounding woods...

22 Cal. snake shot is what you need. I got one of those little pest last week, after he did a nice hole in my stucco. But at least I got even, shot his butt and then gave him to the neighbors cat.

I think actually, woodpeckers are damn hard to rid yourself of, hence the cartoon of some years back.

My previous house had Cypress wood siding. Woodpeckers loved it. I heard if you could ever kill one, and nail it on the house, the rest would leave. No need to try that remedy. It just gave them a easier place to perch and peck. Oh, stuffed owls didn't work neither. These were yellow bellied sapsuckers.

Don't have that problem. Brick house with vinyl wrapped alum. trim. They do like the old pine trees though.(pine beetles)

Got out Karen's B.B. Gun and knocked one off the satellite dish that it was in love with. TAP TAP TAP everyday all day. This was a little fella, now the Pileated one which has a body of 12-13 inches tall would take a little more power. Had one drill a hole in the shop similar to the one you showed only a little larger. Sneaked up on him one day, didn't know they made them that big. They can sling some wood.

The one I got last week was a Downy Woodpecker, small but very cute, at least the cat next door thought so.

Hell no, that smart SOB Cardinal is still visiting us. I gave up on him and called a professional bird specialist, he tried for a week and didn't have any better luck than I've had. Even told me he wasn't going to charge me because that damn bird was so smart he just seemed to be laughing at him. He said the cardinals are very territorial which is why he keeps attacking the other bird he sees in the windows, you'd think if he was so damn smart he'd have figured out in the last 6 months he had met the enemy and it was him. Fake owl didn't phase him, nor did the rubber snakes and he is too damn smart to get a shot at. Anyway he just attacks the glass in the windows, doesn't do any damage, except to my great white hunter status.

Had a Cardinal like that here a few years ago MJ. It'd drop out of a tree next to the garage window. Land on a window air conditioner in that window. Then try to just kick the chit out of the other bird he was sure was in the window staring back at him. Dumb bird was there all of two spring/summer/fall cycles. Even had the neighbors on that side laughing at him with all the racket he made.

I never tried to run him off though. Was too amusing to get rid of. He was stupid and funny at the same time. That's a killer combination in red birds.

Problem with this guy is he starts at first light and usually at our bedroom window between 5:30 and 6:00 am.

It sounds like this guys dad and you're right, it is funny as heck. He puts on a show for company, ask Brian.

Out the garage window is funny. Out the bedroom window is pellet gun targeting. If ASPCA doesn't like it they should give the bird a pellet gun of its own.
