Tire Truing
« on: August 05, 2013, 02:11:49 PM »

I remember back in the '70s when I was running sports cars, having my front end aligned, tires trued and balanced.  Essentially, they trimmed off the high spots on the tire before balancing.  There was a small pile of rubber shavings under the tires after they did this.  My initial reaction was -WTF, that's a lot of miles. These were Semperit or Michelin radials at the time.  I remember that the ride was much smoother at all speeds, so wasn't just a balance thing.

I was just looking at my front tire cupping, and wondering if this procedure is possible or advisable.  Lots of tread left, even with the high spots cut off, and should eliminate the howling until replacement.

Inquiring minds want to know.
