EVO main shaft seal change out
« on: April 20, 2016, 12:18:47 AM »

I have a S&S V111. Motor has over 60k miles and the seal around the crankshaft is leaking motor oil into the Primary case. I just got home from a 2500 mile trip today. My oil in tank is lower by 3/4 of a quart. The primary oil is black..
I have no problem removing the clutch hub assy/ motor sprocket /
Compensator and chain adjuster. Then pulling the rotar to access the seal. Thing is, I have never removed or installed one. I don't think the crank drive shaft has a  spacer that the seal rides on like the transmission main shaft has. The crankshaft just has a seal.
What are the pros/cons of doing this my self.  Any special tools?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The seal rides on a spacer. The seal can be a little bit of a hassle to remove.

I removed outer primary,  clutch, motor sprocket,  adjuster,  and alternator rotor to access the seal. Using  a box cutter I was able to cut the brittle seal to remove the crankshaft sleeve. It has some wear after almost 60k miles. With the amount of effort to get it out I will replace it, along with the new seal. Bummer I got order one. Another darn delay.

This was it before I removed seal and sleeve. I would have thought that the seal would have had the cup inward not outward to the primary case.
