Title: Want to remove tour pack but what to do about all those wires
Post by: flhtrusecvo on September 12, 2020, 06:17:54 PM
Hey everyone. Im new to the forum and cvo's. I just got an 11 RGU CVO and am wanting to remove the lower fairing with speakers and the tour pack with speakers. I pulled the seat off and there is a spaghetti mess of wiring under there. It also doesnt look like many disconnect options for speaker wires, antenna, lights and amp.

Has anyone removed or relocated the amp? Its a thick wire bundle and not sure it will fit in saddlebag without drilling a large hole. Ive read where others have disconnected wires from inside tour pack and rolled them up under seat but I dont see how thats possible on a cvo with all the wiring already under seat.

Im honestly thinking I should have just focused on a road glide and not gotten the ultra. Any help or direction in removing the tour pack and wiring? Thanks in advance.

Look on the Harley parts website. There is a kit to remove the tour pack on both the 2011 and 2015 bikes. Both came with directions on how to remove the tour pack including, what to do with the wiring.

There is also a thread on this board if not several on how to do it. FLSTDAVE ( I may be off on the spelling as I am not home to look it up) posted a thread with detailed directions for the 2015 with pictures.

Thanks for the reply and link. Very much appreciated, and outstanding step by step instructions.
But under my seat the wiring is no where near as clean and organized as yours. See pic below. Looks like s terribly daunting task.

Yeah, i know... I'm so disgusted with myself right now. I'm pretty good at doing my own maintenance and upgrades but this just took the wind out of my sails. Totally regretting it now.

Not sure who did that to your bike.  That wiring is a mess.  Either way it needs to be straightened out so you know what is what.  That would drive me nuts, I would be cleaning it up right away.

Is this any better? Long process of unplugging wires and turning things on and off to see what's affected. There was a few feet of black and red wire cheaply spliced into the a running break light connector. Didn't seem to affect anything either way so i removed it as all running, turn signal and brake lights are working.

So if this is a good starting point, are you guys using special disconnect plugs on your wiring? Cause wires coming from my tour pack and speakers are running straight up under dash panel all the way up to the radio.

There a thick bundle of wires coming out of my left saddlebag and wondering if that is another small amp?

Another question is if i remove the amp under tour pack, will i still be able to run all 6 speakers should i put tour pack back on without amp? Will i lose alot of sound?

Thanks again for your time help and patience.

That looks quite a bit better!

My radio had quick connect pug under the tour pack for it, for the radio antennae and the CB antenna.

You will have to ask others about the amp.  Mine had no amp in tour pack, it was all done from under fairing or in saddle bag.

I have looked at the wiring diagram and it appears that the radio signals all go to the amp and then back up to the radio and the controls to power the front and back speakers. Looks like if I remove the amp under the tour pack then the radio is DEAD.
I dint know how to overcome this.

A few years ago one of the locals I know wanted to do this.  He'd bought the kit but I'd seen Dave's instructions and went with those instead.  It was better.  However....

With that picture of yours someone has been there before you.  Though don't look anything like that when unmolested.  That's a spaghetti pile that would drive me nuts.  I'd want to sort that out and know I knew what everything was before I ever started changing anything.  Too great a chance otherwise if something gives you a problem to not have any idea whether the problem began with the new work or what was messed with before.

Is this any better? Long process

I should have read ahead....

Very nice job of what had to be a tedious and probably slightly nerve-racking task.  Chasing someone else's ideas of wiring is worse than when your wife finds out about girlfriend (or vice versa [unless you're really lucky]).

Looks like a much better place to start now.  You deserve a beverage :drink: !
