NEW FEATURE ON THE 2009'S
« on: July 26, 2008, 09:09:51 AM »

I was told by the sales manager at the local HD dealer that the 2009's have a feature that shuts down the rear cylinder at idle to reduce heat.  He said that when the throttle is at idle the rider can roll the throttle grip forward and it shuts down the rear cylinder.  The cylinder relights when throttle is opened.  I was talking to him about the CVO Ultra so I'm not sure if this is just on 110's or all 09's.

Anyone else heard this?

yes , the engine temp management system has been in the software for a while. But the 09s may have some advanced features in the software.

It's mentioned in my FLHRSE4 owners manual but doesn't tell how to turn it on or off.  Actually it says see the Dealer . . .

A buddy told me you roll the throttle forward (off) and hold it until the cruise control light comes turns RED, release the throttle and then roll throttle forward agin and hold until cruise control light turns green.

I have not tried it so take it for what it's worth.

It has been quite some time since I read in my electrical manual for my '08 SERK.  I had all my electrical manual WAY before I had my bike and I got the shop and supplement afterwards.  So from memory, and this will be close and in theory correct.  Once a certain temperature is reached, temp not given or told where it is monitored, the rear cylinder cuts off and the idle drops from 1,100 to 900 rpms.  As long as you stay below 7 mph it will stay in the "Parade Mode".  Once you reach 7 mph it ignites the rear cylinder and away you go.

There are lots of times here in St. Louis lately that when I'm stuck on the freeway in the great bike parking lot, I turn off the bike but then have to restart it.  If I could roll forward the throttle assembly to "put" it into Parade Mode, I think that would be a big help.  At least it would make me feel better.  Maybe there will be a new firm ware flash that they can retro back to the '08s.  I can't believe we don't have the hardware to do this already on the '08s.

I know some of the guys have replaced their horns with the cooling fans and they say that does help keep the temps down while stuck in traffic.  Yes, they reposition the horns, I didn't mean they removed them entirely....

Hope this helps.

I have this system on my 2008 dyna. Was a little annoying at first but i have richened the mixture up and it hardly does it now.
The manual does tell you how to dis-arm it but i think setting up the bike is a better idea. Those of you with fairings will have a tough time in traffic so i would get the mixture richer right away. Here in the great white north you can change the emissions with out repercussions.
Cheers

It is available on the '08's.

Quote from 2008 FLHRSE4 owners manual:

"ENGINE IDLE TEMPERATURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM For those riders who frequently find themselves in riding conditions where the vehicle is subjected to prolonged idle conditions, an optional dealer enabled engine calibration is available.  This calibration offers limited rear cylinder cooling with the vehicle stopped while the engine is left at idle.  This option is available for original equipment engine calibrations only.  See your dealer for details."

Yes, it is available on the 08's.  On the 08's it has to be turned off/on by the dealer.  The rider can do it on the 09's.
