Title: Is My Dealer The Only One???
Post by: 1sharprdkg on July 29, 2011, 06:25:26 PM
I stopped by my local dealer earlier today hoping to pick up a "CVO Brochure." (I knew it was a slim chance). At the very least I would get the normal brochure that has all the bikes. So I am checking out a 2005 CVO Fatboy when a saleman that has seen me in the store a lot. He says hello and to let him know if I have any questions or if I need any help. I said I was interested in the new CVO's but I can see there are not any on the floor. I played the 20 question game with him, you know like, which model, what am I riding now, etc. Here is the part that dumbfounded me. I asked if there was any way I could get a CVO brochure, well as I expected he looked at me like I had asked him to give me a thousand dollars. Standard answer, they are expensive, only each salesman gets one and puts his name on it...then he said they have a few but they give them to people that buy a CVO bike. I said looks like if they just bought a CVO bike they would not need a brochure. He did not respond. Here is what shocked me. So I said well can I get the regular 2012 brochure that has all the bikes? He said NO they are expensive and they don't have many of them but he gave me his "card" with there website and I can look them up and see all the bikes on line. WTF! Is he kidding me? I tossed his card in the trash on my way out the door. One more reason why last year I drove 11 1/2 hours to Erie, PA to buy my 09SEUC and did not waste any time with them. Anybody else experience this or similar issue. What is the MOCO thinking? Or is this just my dealer padding his bottom line? OK sorry had to get that off my chest. Not sure why I keep going there!

Hopefully you dropped his card in the trash while he was watching.  That sucks.  Don't go back unless it is to show him the CVO you bought somewhere else.

I would let the owner or general manager know what happened. If the brochure was for those that buy CVO's I'd told him to look in the parking lot and I guess I need to buy another one from them since you don't want to sell any!!! >:(

The owner or general manager is probably the guy who wouldn't pony up the bucks to buy the brochures in the first place.  Harley doesn't supply brochures and catalogs free of charge, they treat the dealers the same way they do the actual customers, as an easy source of extra profit.  Folks who used to get annual parts catalogs and sales brochures and motor clothes catalogs mailed to them might think that H-D was doing that, but they would be wrong.  The dealer was footing the bill for those things, and with the current economy a lot of them have cut that expense out.  If the dealer bought enough CVO brochures for every Tom, Dick, and Harry who walked through the door and asked for one, he'd be out a significant chunk of change.  I'm not saying what happened here was right or a good business practice, just trying to present some possible reasons other than just having an idiot salesman.

One solution could be for Harley to post high quality pdf versions of the brochures online.  Unfortunately, the greedy jerks would probably force you to pay a fee to download it.

Jerry knows what he is talking about, it's true the dealers do pay for all the brochures that are mailed and handed out and they ain't cheap brother. I used to get a new cataloge sent to me every quarter of the year but no more. Times are a little slow right now and they are all cutting back. My two cents worth

Oct 2002 was the last time I was in that Dealer,  Time before that was Sept 202 when I tired to buy a 2003 Silver/Black fatboy, they were marked up way over MSRP, 4K or so.  Asked a sales man what they would take right now for it, he flipped the card on the handle bars over and showed me the marked up price and said cant you read.  So I went back in Oct to show him my Silver Back 2003 Fatboy I paid msrp for.  If they were the last Harley dealer in the USA, I would buy something else.

The dealer I use now treats me well.  I was in asking about the 12 CVO road glides and the features and was handed the CVO Brochure.  A day later he got a deposit on a 12 CVO Road Glide.

I know Jerry is 100% correct. But, I also believe your dealer responded to your interest correctly. I know printed material is expensive...I feel they need to spend some money to make some money! They just spent a ton of money remodeling the whole store, all new floors, flat screen TV's, bathrooms, waiting area. Maybe they should have saved some money for brochure's. Trust me I would never even consider buying a bike from them and only buy parts there when I have to. Smokey Mountain had several new and used CVO's on the floor the other week when I was up there. They would be my first choice.

Truly an amazing attitude! :o Makes you wonder how they survive.

I got my 2011 CVO catalog via H-D. They had a request form on their website and sent it free. Not sure if they have the same thing for 2012.

Hmm I'll have to check and see if H-D has a 2011 CVO brochure. As mush as I paid at the mega store stealership in SW Idaho, you'd think one would have been presented. They may have won the battle but they lost the war.

Yeah I got the 2011 CVO catalog sometime last year from the H-D website, mailed to me free. I was just searching around and found a drop down tab, filled out mailing info and it came in a few days. Didn't really know what I was getting or how nice and cool it would be until it arrived. So far I have searched three different times on the Harley Davidson USA site and can only find the "download a PDF brochure." I will keep looking.

Smokey Mountain had several new and used CVO's on the floor the other week when I was up there. They would be my first choice.

Wednesday last week they only had USED CVO's on the floor.  They did have a 12 slate / black CVO Street glide in the back that was being preped for the customer.  Wow, did it have a killer stock sound system.

They are a very good dealer to work with.  My last three bikes have come from there, and a fourth will be coming from them

After drooling over the Orange/Black Ultra CVO I got my name on the first Orange/Black they get..  Wife loves the new Switchback FLX, she has her name on the first black that coming in a few weeks.. The Switchback is a nice model, i personally think HD did a good job putting that together.. A lot of woman will be hooked on this model  :2vrolijk_21:

NOT abundant around here! Your lucky! Here they act like they are printed on gold and lined with diamonds! :nixweiss: I would even be willing to give them a few bucks for a CVO catalog cause I will keep it for future reference, not look at it one time and toss it in the trash.

1sharprdkg, I just came from my dealer in Memphis. I stopped in to talk with the service department and saw the sales manager Danny. We were talking about the new line of CVO's and I told him I was surprised that there wasn't a Road Glide Ultra this year. He was asking me if I seen the Yellow and Black Ultra. I told him I did and would like to see one in person. He went to his office and gave me the brochure for the 2012 CVO's which has a centerfold picture of it. He also gave me a brand new 2012 P&A catalog. I started laughing and told him about what you went through. He just shook his head. My dealer is Bumpus in Memphis and I feel like family when I walk in! :2vrolijk_21:

I have the extended warranty and have had work done here.. They did say if it was under normal factory warranty I would have to take it to Buffalo Harley for work. The funny thing is, they are closer for me.

Colbach in Morristown TN, one of the local dealers, handed me a copy of CVO, regular release and the parts book when I walked in. They had a good stack of them. I thanked them and told them that I collected the catalogues. I'm going to SMHD this afternoon and will see if they are as willing to give them out. I told Kevin the salesman to hold one for me.

I was at Cedar River HD in Charles City, Ia. where I bought my 09 RGSE and was just looking through, and Seth walked up to me and just handed me one. He said all the 12 CVO's were neat. I said thank you very much.

I went in to Mason City HD ( they are owned by the same brothers ) and Jack (sales man) asked me if I wanted a CVO Sales Brochure and I said that would be great.

I guess if a good HD dealer want to sell bikes, they will treat customers with respect. Other dealers are giving them away no questions asked.

I have an extra one,  if anyone would like one I will mail it free of charge. send PM

There were piles of CVO catalogs at the HD factory area in Sturgis.

Would have picked up some extras if I knew how difficult they could be to obtain.

Of course they were for the 12s, I wonder if the Moco might have some 11 catalogs in a box somewhere - kind of interested to see how the model I just bought a few weeks ago was marketed.

For grins, I think I'll call cust svc next week just to see what the response is....

My dealer has them but is a little tight handing them out.. I asked him what the big deal was with these brochures, telling him i hear a lot of dealers dont even have them. He said he gets limited quantities each CVO season and that's all he gets. He said Harley dishes them out to the dealers based on their CVO sales quota, explaining some dealers dont even get CVO's hence no CVO brochures. He also said the CVO's are limited to dealers based on their overall sales too which may explain why some have more then another.

I dont think he is 'B' sing me,, he seems pretty up.   :nixweiss:

No, it's not the only one.  A long time ago when we used to live in Sioux City, IA, they wouldn't give me one either.  Before I ever worked there, Rochester Harley-Davidson would give them out like water if they had them still available for the year.  They still carry on the philosophy that if you have the catalog and a brochure...with them selling everything at MSRP, the more likely you are to buy a bike.

When I was in Sturgis I checked out the 2012 CVOs at the HD display. They had plenty of brochures there. I asked for one, then asked for another for my buddy, then the Harley rep asked if I wanted a few more, should have taken them I guess. I've been lucky enough to get a brochure ever since I bought my 09 SERG.

As a side note I saw CVO brochures for sale on ebay a few years ago starting at $20.00, Crazy eh??

I would love to get hold of a 2012 CVO brochure. As far as I know they do not exist in England, though forum members in other parts of Britain may prove me wrong. Any chance of a copy being pdf scanned and posted for download please? Or is that against forum rules (me being newbie I do not know the etiquette on this).

I called into the Guildford Dealership today to add a few bits of bling and chrome to the order for the SE3.
So I asked the Sales Manager if he had a copy of the 2012 CVO brochure. He has not one brochure and does not think he can get his hands on one for me. But I am working on it.
I am prepared to pay by PayPal any postage costs if one of you fellow members in the States can post one to me in England  please. If you are up for it please PM me and I will send a work address where you can post to me. Thanks.

here in the frozen wasteland we can't get the cvo catalogue, not offered at all. The US website had a request form, but would not send to a Canadian address. brochures are easy at our dealership, but as some have said if they don't get the cvo bikes no brochures.
