Leaky Speedometer
« on: July 30, 2018, 01:03:17 PM »

I know this topic has been covered extensively.  Last week I had the speedo/tach replaced on my 2018 RGCVO.  That "oily substance" was streaking on the inside of the glass.    My '13 RGCVO had condensation, but this is different, it's oil.  Anyway, the dealer replaced it for me UNDER WARRANTY ($650 just for the part).  This past weekend I took a ride, about 200 miles and the same thing has  happened.  This is crazy!!  I'm gonna call the dealer tomorrow when the service manager is in and tell him I want it replaced AGAIN.  Is there anyone out there without this problem?  Is there anybody who has a bike without a defective speedo/tach?

My 17 CVO SG speedo was replaced 3 times and so far the speedo in my 18 CVO SG has been replaced once but it has streaked again.

I have had 2 replaced and now waiting on Harley to give a "clear date" on my 3rd.  Also bought my wife a new Softail 114 Heritage last fall and the gauge on it has gone the same way!  Another example of poor quality on overpriced junk.  Warranty covering but that is not the point.

Long story short, Harley will not replace the speedo AGAIN.  The service manager at the dealership spoke to Harley Tech and was told they are working on a fix and will not replace it a 2nd time.  I just mailed out a letter to the Motor Co detailing the issue and my thoughts.  I'm curious what their response to me will be.

They will not replace; period?  Ever (on their dime)?  Or will they will not replace now while waiting for a superceding part to be released?  Those aren't the same thing.

They will not replace it for the 2nd time under warranty until they figure out a fix.  However, the service manager at the dealership told me that even when the bike no longer has a warranty, it will still be replaced free of charge because the issue is "on file".  We'll see what happens.  Likely nothing.  Anyway, I just mailed a letter to Harley.  Probably a waste of time......

This is NOT a new problem, it's been around for at least a couple years and possibly more (I seem to remember guys reporting this kind of issue on the first RushedMore bikes in 2014).  So how long does it take to find that "FIX"?  I think you need to call H-D yourself and not let the dealership be the middleman.  And I would not accept a verbal assurance they will fix it even if it's out of warranty since it's now "on record".

The replacement for mine last year had a "C" at the end of the part number meaning it's the third attempt at a fix, fourth design counting the original.

I know it's not a new problem.  In fact my previous bike was a 2013 RG CVO that continuously had condensation in the speedo.  Now it's this oily streaking stuff....  Anyway, I sent HD Customer Service a letter regarding this matter.  I'll wait for a response.  I'll give them a little time and if I don't hear from them, I'll call.  However, what's the difference, even if they OK another replacement, the same thing is going to happen.  What we're waiting for is a permanent fix but don't hold your breathe.

Condensation, especially in the small instruments, has been happening for literally as long as I can remember.  That inner washing of the instrument faces was always just a Harley "benefit" that no other major manufacturer saw fit to grant us.  This internal lubrication of the instrument face (while now not uncommon) is a newer thing the last few years though.  Not sure what comes next?  Internal lava fountains on bikes bound for Hawaii?
