Looks like in the end, Harley killed our resale
« on: August 29, 2006, 05:03:41 PM »

I had my bike in the dealer for service this week.  While there, I was looking at the blue 2007 SE Springer they had in the showroom.  The bike looks great.  One of the sales people started asking me questions, and I told him I had the 03 SE Deuce.  He said "the one in back being service" and I said yes.  He told me he would do an appraisal and let me know what he can do about getting me on the new 07 CVO.  So I waited a few minutes and back he came.  He said (reluctantly), "the bike is worth $15K".

So, I got the bike in 12/2003 and it is not even three years old yet and it lost $11K in value.  It is now worth 57% of the original sticker price.  He said it is because of the new 110" motor and the 6-speed tranny.  So much for that limited edition anniversary year CVO being special.

Its a good thing that I still love my bike because it looks like I will be riding it for a bit longer.

It is what it is, but I think HD needs to stop touting the "great resale value" of the bike.

Believe it or not, I've seen a couple of dealers with 03 SED's with low miles and are still asking ~$24-$25K.  Pity the poor fools like us that spend that kind of dough.

I turned down 21K on mine 2 weeks ago. Was not even for sale, a friend of a friend called because he heard I was interested in a 07 SE Ultra. I am interested but the thought of letting my 03 SED would not have occurred to me. I was thinking of letting the 05 SEEG go but right now I have it just perfect for me and decided to keep her. The deuce, no way. I will asure you if you traded it, it would be on that dealers floor for 24K next week. I get more compliments on that bike than any other bike I've owned. It is a real keeper!

Interesting...

From NADA for an '03 SED:
Low Retail -  $14,990
Average Retail  -  $19,720

For an '04:
$18,230   to   $23,985

I still have no plans to ever sell this bike...on the contrary, in the long run, I do expect it to hold it's value...increasing as it becomes older...I hope!  That 100th anniversary badge has to kick in at some point...

Believe me, I have no intention of getting rid of the 03 SE Deuce.  I was just killing time while it was being serviced.  I just could not belive the guys aid it was worth $15K.

I too get so many compliments on the bike and plan to keep it for a long time.  Anything new would be an addition to the stable.

That's exactly the attitude - if you're gonna keep it, who cares what the book says. Take care of it and eventually as the new bikes continue to get more and more expensive, they'll eventually stabilize. Til then, enjoy it.

Dude,

It is all what you think!!!  I have a 2003 SE Duce, right now it is the best ride in my garage!!!  I have a 2006 SE Ultra...going to dump it soon, I finally have all the bugs out of it, but the Duce is a great ride.

Just saw one in Alabama at a HD shop SE Duce....$25,000.

Ride On....

My theory is that a dealer will always start negotiating at the lowest price point for a bike thats in for trade. For 15k anyone can sell cvo deuce rightaway.I would imagine they would be able to go as high as 17-18 k considering they will sell it at 22-23k.But of course best way to sell is to retail it by your self.Banks do similar thing when you want a loan against your property. They walue it below market so when they need cash they make sure that they can get rid of it fast.My 2 cents [smiley=drink.gif]

Ride your nice bike and enjoy it. bikes are depreciating assets, ride it and enjoy it and dont lose any sleep over its "value". Buy it, put a ton in it to make it how you want, enjoy it till you see something else that you have to have and then do it all over again.

After the economy turns around and gas is back at 4 bucks, prices will stabalize or maybe even inflate.  I have no doubt that gas will be way up in an Obama administration.  Domestic drilling is off the table and we're certainly not going to be able to get off of oil.

stealers will always make u a low offer, so they can make a big fat wedge from the next owner.

I just paid 24K for my 04 SE Deuce CVO, it only had 2500 miles on it.  It also has a Phatail 240 rear end that was put on at the dealer prior to delivery. I am pleased with what I got! It's a head turner every where I go.
