Title: 2016 FLTRUSE oil filter chrome or black?
Post by: 1abastarsmda on November 11, 2015, 12:02:32 PM
I just had my 1000 mile service done this morning and I just noticed they put a black oil filter on my bike. Is there any chance it came with a black one? My bike is the charcoal and black with the orange stripe.

I just called the dealer to have them check the one they have on the floor in a different color and was told that the oil filter is black on it also. Admittedly it's pretty well hidden away but at the same time I would never put a black one on there. Why would they cheap out on the oil filter and put a black one on these bikes?

Dave, now you know just 'cause it's a CVO they are going to leave you/us some chrome trinkets to add on... they saved a whole $3.00 by putting a black one on the bike. :-\

5 Micron SuperPremium5 Oil Filter-63731-99A (Black) (http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/superpremium5-oil-filter---5-micron) $11.95

5 Micron SuperPremium5 Oil Filter-63798-99A (Chrome) (http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/superpremium5-oil-filter---5-micron-pa-12-6379899a--1) $14.95

Now multiply that $3.00 by several thousand bikes (we'll have to wait until the end of the model year to see how many they sell) and some "bean counter" convinced/decided that they weren't needed as OE. :( >:(

I just looked at the videos from the dealer shows on YouTube and every one shows black filters.

Da d00d is right.  Anyway, where else is the MoCo gonna find the extra money for all that marketing and advertising that's gonna get more people on bikes..... :huepfenlol2: :D :2vrolijk_21:

I'm pretty sure I remember someone else complaining about the same thing on his 2014.  It was probably part of the Rushed More cost reductions.  I assume with the continued loss of sales they will be looking for more items to eliminate or cheapen to help the bottom line.

Fortunately with all the other junk in the way on a Twin Cooled Touring model the black versus chrome filter isn't exactly a big deal.  If it bothers anyone, I think JC Whitney or some other place probably still offers those slip on chrome covers with the little fins, promoted as coolers.

I agree!  I am sure that is why the red bullet turn signals were eliminated on the 16 SERGU.  Cost reduction, while raising the price.

I actually like the black - it lets all other chrome in the area stand out.

Local dealer changes oil @ 1K free. I asked for chrome vs black it came with and it was no problem. On a different note, I like the no bullet turn signals deal on the 16's. Wish my 15 didn't have them.

The 15 SERGU came from the factory with Chrome.  The 16 SERGU comes from the factory with Black.  Looked at both on the showroom floor yesterday.

Don, to each their own on the bullet signals.  I know several that wish they still had them.  This is mostly people who choose to make the tour pack quick detach.

I would just wrap it it with aluminum foil and tell everyone your bike has the new "Rushed More Wrinkled Chrome Edition" option. Then next oil change wrap it with the dull side of the foil showing and you would have the new improved "Rushed More Satin Chrome Edition."

I was thinking that I could just take this filter off and take it to someone to have it chromed.  Maybe that could be my winter project this year.  I'm half afraid that someone on here will think I'm serious.

I had an aluminum billet type, reusable filter on my last bike and brought it over to the CVO.

Been used for 5 filter changes so far, it removes/tightens with a ratchet.

Provides good filtration and looks good.

Only thing you want to replace is the O ring.

Wrong Dave, my 15 RGCVO came with a black oil filter. I bought it in Sept 14.

My 14 CVO Limited came with a chrome filter, my 15 Road Glide came with a black filter. Worse than that 15 CVOs with granite engine now have black oil pan. I know someone will say "so what you don't see it" and while that is true it still bothers me.

Wrong Dave, my 15 RGCVO came with a black oil filter. I bought it in Sept 14.

Well unless SMHD changed the filter on my bike prior to second week of Sept 2014 delivery on my 15 SERGU it came from the MoCo with chrome.  A friend who took delivery in Nov 14 of his 15 SERGU from the same dealer had Chrome oil filter on his when delivered.  And right now they have one 15 SERGU on the floor still, with a Chrome oil filter.  They have 3 1016 SERGU's on the floor also, all three have black oil filter.

So, I am not wrong.  I know what was delivered to me.  I know what is on the floor at a local dealership as I checked.

Does not put it past me for the MoCo to have it mixed on the line and some getting one and some the others.

I know of two 100th Anniversary bikes that were delivered with the Gold emblem on one side of the tank, which was for the black and sliver bikes, and the silver emblem on the other side of the tank.

I also know of a 2011 SERGU the Burgundy color that was delivered with the 2011 CVO Ultra rear fender.  Same colors but reversed location on the fender.

You were wrong in saying the 15 CVO's had chrome. They ALL didn't. Maybe you saw some that did come with chrome but I know of three that came with black, so not ALL 15's had chrome, but then who cares??
