LED Is there possibly a new option?
« on: August 21, 2012, 09:48:24 PM »

Based on the pictures I have seen of the new 2013 Road Glide Custom CVO the MoCo now has an LED headlight option of its own.  It is exactly what I have been waiting for.  A MoCo solution that looks great and should be a great improvement over the stock lighting that should be a direct replacement for many Road Glides.  So this morning I called my parts guru at our local dealer and asked him to do some research.  Find the part numbers, pricing and any other available information.  I'm sure this is will take some time to surface but I have waited over a year for this day.

There are 2 options now from Harley Davidson. Black and Chrome:  $699.  There are a few threads here in the Road Glide Custom, SERG and Electronic Toys ans Gadgets boards about them.   You can also see them now on the Harley website.  Employees at the dealership are usually the last to know.

If I understand your statement there is currently a MoCo solution to add LED headlights on their website or in the P&A catalog.

If I'm not mistaken there is a SEARCH function on this site and the Motor Company site.
Try it, it works, at both places.
That's how I found this,

I appreciate your help, apparently you're just much better at this than me.  I'm headed to my parts counter to stand in line to place my order.

Dealer attempted to order for me and it is BO until Oct '12 just as stated.  I will wait patiently, seems like Lake Shore HD has the best pricing but did not list the Black and Chrome model yet.

I just replaced the MoCo originals with PIAA replacement bulbs. They have excellent output without crashing the bank account. They even allow you to select different color range for the bulbs. Be sure to purchase H4 bulbs rated in the 60/55 Watt range. (They will have the output equivalency of a bulb rated at 135/125 Watts.

The cost on Amazon was approx $37.00 each. After installation and reaiming the headlights, I am very happy with the output. I am also happy I didn't have to spend about $600 more for LED headlamps.

BTW . . . There were no modifications needed for this install.

X2 on this. When I bought my sergu used back in April it already had these installed. Riding next to my buddy at night (sergu also) there's no comparison. I would say they give me as much light as the HIDs I have in all of our trucks. Money well spent.  :2vrolijk_21:

Just think, it'd be almost twice that much if MFG hadn't left the way he did or if Howie had stayed :drink: .

I wonder if the kit includes instructions on how to make the garage door opener work with the new LED's installed.
I'm assuming that, similar to HID lights, these LED's draw a lot less power than the standard halogen lights so they would need a workaround for the opener just like what's needed if you replace the stock bulbs with HID's.

Seems I've heard that before  ;D

I'd love to see the output of the LEDs but I'm not sure I'm sold on the looks of them. For that kind of money, I could buy plenty of the PIAA bulbs for mine. JMO.

GPOPVET -- First I want to say they look awesome.  I was at my dealer today and they had two sets of the Chrome and Black on the wall ready to sell and install.  My dealership has not installed a set yet, how many hours labor did they charge you to install?  I got hold of the first couple of pages and saw that the outer fairing has to be removed and some minor modifications done.  It looks like you have the Black and Chrome kit.

So tell us, how did they do at night?

Much wider view, my Ultra had them but not as bright. Labor was 1 hour taking fairing off not a big job for Harley mechanics.

Is this the one?

You're gonna love them. At only 10% of the cost of LEDs, well worth the light output. Might not have the "cool factor" but the savings on these will allow you to spend it elsewhere.

TIP . . . After installing the PIAAs, grab a buddy to help and check/adjust your headlight alignment. Mine came from the factory aiming pretty low. You will definitely get much better coverage with the headlights properly aligned.

Yeah, mine are so low now my low beams barely exist and I ride with my high beams on and no one has flashed me yet. However, dealer checked them and said they were within spec.... ???

TALL DRINK - second the pictures, I'm also interested in how much labor/time your dealer charged. Mine was unsure just how much time to estimate since he has not done one yet.  Thanks for you input

No, There is a black plastic piece that surrounds the 2 headlamps. Carefully pop it off. There are 4 catches,; 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. I started from the bottom working it off. I used a wide blade screwdriver wrapped with a microfiber towel. Be very careful!!! I hope/wonder if someone has a better method for removal.

Once that is off there are four screws (2ea) that hold the lamps in the fairing. Remove them and the lamps will come out. Simply replace the bulbs and reassemble. The whole thing toook me about 30 - 40 minutes.

For pre-2010 bikes you do have to remove the fairing to replace the headlight bulbs.

Thanks GG. Done. Just took it for a spin. Much brighter (whiter) light but they definitely need adjusting. Any instructions on where the adjustment is? I assume, remove the bezel again?

So, so glad I have a 2011!

There is a section in the Owners Manual that covers this. Pages 199 - 202. The fairing and the bezel can stay on. Page 202 has a diagram that show where the adjusting screws are.

Is this the adjustment hole(s)?

Yep, There is a small hex-headed adjuster (I think mine were painted a bright green on the head) just inside the hole (one on each side of the fairing). My biggest problem was finding a socket small enough. Ended up finding one on a 1/4" drive deep socket set.

They look awesome!  I rode last night after dark and they work better than expected.  Expensive I admit but the price of admission was well worth it.  Thanks to my mechanic, Lee Bomar at HD of North TX.

Just installed the new bulbs.  Can't wait to try them out tonight.  Hopefully the $44 spent ends up saving me the $650 for LEDs!
