Title: 2017 CVO limited
Post by: Royalroadie on August 26, 2016, 08:06:02 PM
Well I just got back from the HD open house in Kansas City.  I did not want to wait for a ride on the new CVO Streetglide so I took out a limited for a 20 minute ride.  I know it is not comparing apples to apples since I ride a Streetglide, but this is what I found.  The motor is very nice, quite, smooth and powerful.  My current SG puts 96hp to the ground and 114TQ.  My butt Dyno says the new 114 has that or more without a tuner, tune, or pipes.  The throttle responde is just better.  It pulls nicely no matter what gear you are in.  Handling was cushier but that could be from the seat, the bike is well planted and very compliant.  Top end noise has been greatly reduce compared to the twin cam.  Heat? What heat?   I would guess that it is a good 25*~30* cooler on my right leg.  I took it out on country roads for 15 minutes before I got on the interstate.  Getting on to the super slab I banged it into the rev limiter 5 or 6 times, there is a solid cutoff when you hit it. The motor just goes flat @5k, no studder just flat, but still smooth.  Roll ons at 65 in 6th gear pull much better than the 110 period.  If they hold up this is going to be one Hell of s bike.   After all the bitching at HD TC  they might just have gotten it right this time.  The colors are better in person than the pictures but not as creative as previous years.  It is more refined and reminds me of the Indian 111 with a bit more gut. It is not as visceral as my 110 but it could be with a little work.  The performance you get right out of the box is absolutely great.  The vibration is still there but it has been reduced,  like I said it is not as visceral as the twin cam.    I am not what you would call a koolaid drinker but if my bike was stolen I would definitely replace it with a 117.  Oh, one last thing, the clutch engages fairly late compared to my 2012 hydraulic clutch.  It will take a little getting used to.

All I can say is if this is reliable, thats a big if, they hit it out of the park.  I still enjoy the visceral feeling of my TC, but if I was going to ride across the US it is the bike I would take, IF it's reliable. I do applauded them for their effort! Now the bike lives up to all the hype they lavished on the Rushmores.

A dealer just asked me if I want to put a deposit on a CVO Limited. He get's his first one - Black Garnet/Red Pearl on 9/30. I think most CVO Limiteds are scheduled to be on alot of  showroom floors in 3-4 weeks, although there are a few out there already.

What color limited did you test ride? What did you think of the design and color?

The Black Garnet/Red pearl is a nice color, the Graphics might leave a little to be desired depending on your personal tastes.  I'd like to see the silver/blue in person because from the depictions on the HD site I think that one looks best.

Did see a Garnet/Red one today. And IMHO the Red pearl looked a little orange under the florescent lighting, but I didn't see it out in the daylight..

I will be happy for anyone who gets one of these bikes.  However, the paint designers should be fired.  There is no flow to the graphics.  It seems that all they tried to do was put a design on each of the body parts  with no thought process.  I have looked at the 4 color choices on the Limited and none of them work for me.  It's just sad what a CVO has come to regarding paint/graphics.  Just look at the picture in post #7 for reference.

Ed, I rode the green one.  I didn't like the color but I wanted to see how they ran.  As for performance it was very good stock. I didn't like the clutch, way to late.  The motor is very smooth and they have seemed to have licked the heat issue, very well.  It is quite smooth, but as I say not as visceral.  Now if they hold up they will have a winner.

Don "Twolanerider" called it baby poop green.  I called it split pee soup.

I think I'd have 100% agreed if I hadn't seen one in person today.  Pretty sweet looking bike.  Lots of sparkle in the paint.  And love the rounded valve covers.  If I was in the market, this one would be coming home.

Thanks for the photos Brian.  As always the pice on the moco website do not do justice to the paint jobs.  In your photos that bike does look good.  And I've got my eye on one just like that as we speak.  We'll see how this develops.   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for sharing the pics. That's the bike I'm planning on getting. One of my local dealers takes delivery on the garnet & red pearl CVO Limited at the end of Sept. I wish it was a CVO RG Ultra but i'll be happy with another batwing. We'll see how things develop in the next month.

The graphics/stripes on that are hideous! Looks as if someone had a bad afterthought and made the stripes with a roll of red masking tape right over the paint, lol. Really fugly.

Congrats Bill.  I was at my dealer today and he has this same bike on the floor on hold with my name on it.  Just waiting on ESP to inspect my 2012 for the engine problem so we can do the final numbers crunching.  Sure hope it isn't too painful!

Anyone know for sure if the new 2017 CVO Limiteds have the garage door opener built into the hi-beam switch as in the past? Are the handle bar switches backlit or do the lighted switches have to be added? No reference on the website.

ultrafxr, If you get the new bike and want to install your Legend air pump under the tour pack I will make up the brackets for you and I will even come down to your house and help you install the brackets and do the wiring for you if you can wait until this winter. I don't think the 2015 frame has changed from the 2017??????

I had a chance to test ride a 2017 CVO Limited at the York Operations Open House today. It was really mobbed as the weather was ideal. The bike I rode was a silver and palladium.

As you can see my perspective comes from riding a heavily worked 2010 CVO Ultra that I have 58,000 miles on. My current bike's tires are fresh for comparison with the test bike. The test ride was rather short, only 8 miles so I tried to focus on first impressions.

Impressions. I thought the paint looked sharp even though I prefer the darker colors. I will need the floor board extensions as I needed them for the current bike. I rode a rented 2016 Ultra Limited for a week last year so I was somewhat familiar with most of the Rushmore's upgrades.

First thing I noticed were the grips. My current CVO has smooth rubber interspaced with smooth chrome strips. The new grips jumped out at me as they are covered in very small nubs. It sorta surprised me, not in a good way. To be honest it felt sorta cheap but I guess it will give a strong grip in bad weather.

I did notice the slow speed handling in the lot before leaving. The bike  felt very balanced. Overall the suspension felt excellent but it was over limited miles. Very sure footed. Does it feel "astounding" to my current bike....no. Improved ....yes.

The radio is really nice. Loud and clear at all speeds and I was never above 40% volume.

The exhaust is miserable. I get that some may like a quiet bike but this is remarkably quiet. Barely any exhaust tone at all but then my comparison is to a D&D Fatcat. I don't want to go back to the volume of a FC on the new bike but the stock pipes sound too close to a metric cruiser for my tastes. I'm sure the aftermarket will provide options in the future.

Shifting is interesting. It's very sharp and clear but it does feel different and abit unusual. Hard to explain but you can feel the gears meshing/chattering for a split second before they engage. It gives a sense of vibration just before the gear is fully engaged. Nothing disconcerting but I think I prefer the "cleaner" feeling of the current bike shifting.

The engine. It does feel strong. Really strong for a stock bike. I had just ridden my bike 2 hrs to and back from the plant so I had time to really mentally compare to my current bike. It's nowhere near as powerful but for a stock bike it accelerated terrific. In fact the biggest issue I found is that it can run through the gears so quickly it was very easy to bump the rev limiter at 5500. It happened a half dozen times in 8 miles particularly running the twisties hard.

The rev limiter will be one of the first things to be addressed on my new CVO.

Worth noting I test rode an Indian Roadmaster about a month ago. It felt solid with strong performance but the CVO has stronger performance and aspects that the Indian just can't match. The Indian TP Open from the rear vs the side. I think Indian should rethink that design. I didn't care for the seating position of the Indian and of course it doesn't have the Infotainment system which is a big part of my motivation for upgrading.

Overall I was impressed with the 2017 CVO Limited. I'm looking to forward to the new bike's arrival in Late Oct but it's going to take some significant upgrades to get it anywhere near my current bike. But that's half the fun!

New here.  Been on the 2017 CVO Limited since September 24th, 2016.
Love it.   Have some small issues.  Opening up here to get started.

Rode to North Carolina and put 2000 miles on it the 1st week I had it.
Definitely more torque than my previous 110 CVO.   I dont like the floor boards.
I will have to change them.  Also it is too quiet.  Lots of options are coming but
not out yet.  Love the color scheme.   I also definitely want to get rid of the
cat and go to a clean true dual exhaust.

The bike seems to vibrate above 3200 RPMs The 2014 CVO did not vibrate
like this one.  Was interested in if anyone knows if the cat or the stock exhaust
contributed to the vibration.  It not a lot but enuf to notice.

The left floor board is very stable. The right floorboard rocks/pivots left an right like
there's a rock under it.  Looked at the rubber connections (4 of them) and one
seems to be a lot weaker.  Mentioned it to the dealership and they look at me like
I am from mars.   After-market floor boards are in my future. But it bugs me that
the CVO doesnt DO IT RIGHT the first time.

Also, have heard that since the loss of the race-tuner lawsuit they are now
"street tuners" and they are basically crippled race tuners.

Even Vance and Hines have disclaimers now.   SO do I void the warranty if I
put ANYTHING other than harley pipes on my CVO?

I got a lot more questions.... Just looking for someone else that has the same
bike and we can discuss it.

Thank you to who ever chimes in.
