2015 Cvo softail problems
« on: April 12, 2020, 10:31:12 PM »

Hello all been awhile
Life has been good until the other day returning home from a ride with the wife. Pulled in the drive after about 100 mile ride and bike was making some bad noise grinding noise coming from cam area. Drained oil no metal but oil was very dark with only 200 miles on it smelled burnt. Started tearing it down ran into a snag need torx plus bits to remove a lot of parts ordered a set going to be here Tuesday. Any ideas? Bike is just shy of 20k miles ant thoughts?

Lifter failure would be my bet. What parts do you need a torx plus bit for?

Not sure ordered both sets , I have a set now that only goes to t40 so you may be correct. Hoping just lifters and may change cams and bearings when I’m in there also debating on a new oil pump and cam plate hoping for the best preparing for the worst.

If you have lost a lifter you very well could have damage throughout the engine as the metal will be throughout and there is no way to completely get it all out without a complete tear down. Hopefully you heard it before to much has been ground away. Lifters and cams will be a must and possibly lots more. Post up some pics when you get it apart.

Update tore into bike today removed gas tank, rocker boxes , pushrods and lifters. Lifters looked ok no froze rollers or flat spots. Going to Remove cam plate and cams tomorrow. Ordered new S&S lifters today and going to order new screaming eagle cam plate and oil pump tomorrow. If cams look ok may just run them not sure money is tight right now. Not sure if lifters will make the noise it was making can they and still look ok? Hd-dude you were correct on torx bolts all standard. Whats really sad is Im doing this to a machine that has less than 20k miles if I purchased a car for 30k only thing I would be doing is changing the oil.

Not to hijack the thread, but Jim--is there anything on the bike you would need torx plus for??

Update after checking everything on the cam side could not find anything really wrong besides old lifters moved over to primary side. Drained oil From primary side and it was gray metallic looking removed cover and was black inside of cover. Clutch was wasted  so ordered a Barnett clutch kit for it. So ticking may have been from lifters and grinding coming from clutch. Will have parts I hope by Friday and spend a day putting it all back together.

It's good that you didn't have any failure in the camchest, also good to have the lifters changed out for some peace of mind. Was the clutch slipping? Curious what it looks like and why it's "wasted"

The clutch had some broken springs last summer local hd shop changed them but clutch worked But noticed decrease in sweet spot but did not slip at all. Removed discs today not much left From what I can tell the ones with no disc material on them were discolored. need new batteries in calipers to get true read on them. Any info on Barrett se/Cvo clutch discs kit? Comes with clutch pack and the 3 springs.

Barnett makes good clutches. Since you are in the primary it will be a good idea to pull the compensator apart and give it a look over.

Ok will do that. got a new stock compensater that came out of my buddies 120r if needed not sure if the same? Hey if anyone needs some new 120r jugs pistons rings give me a shout maybe get someone a great deal. He purchased a new 120r crate motor then before putting it in the bike made a 131 out of it.
