American Rider article
« on: November 10, 2005, 01:50:34 PM »

I've been doin' a little research on 103 mods.  I ran across this article in American Rider and thought I would pass it on. http://www.americanrider.com/output.cfm?id=1021897

1) he "cant find any timing specs on the 253 cam"  they are on on the H-D web sight !!!
2) "if under 160 psi cranking compression , use the 204 with a 4-Degree advance gear or the andrews 21"  Joe..please ..big motors shrink cams and you got to know things like chamber shape and squish and valve/port sizes...to pick a cam. An andrews 26g cam is on the boarder line of too small for a 103 motor.
3) "cam change should'nt require any tuning changes to the EFI"  I'm not gonna even comment on this one!!  Time for joe minton to lay down and take a nice nap. And he writes for a magazine???   I hope he wears a tie so he can pull his head out of his A**.

Actually, he just composed his paragaph very poorly.  What he wrote is "Fit a Screamin' Eagle or similar free flowing air filter.  Avoid those filters that have the air turn corners or that directly expose the filter element to the air stream.  The Screamin' Eagle, Rivera "Smoothie", or Arlen Ness "Big Sucker" are good examples."  If you read the two sentences I underlined first, and then the "avoid" sentence, then it makes sense.  I believe what he meant was that they were good examples of what you should install, as opposed to those faddish velocity stack types that twist and turn and then point straight ahead.

I took Joe's advice this spring and installes the 21's in my 103. Ran great and had tons of torque. Down side was that it was very noisy. The valve springs are too stiff and the valves were ringing or slamming down on the seats. After having the starter take a dump, I went back and decided that maybe 190ccp was too much for the stock unit. I was on the fence about the TW26s or the TW37s. Went with the 37's shooting at a target of 180 ccp. I was close. I am at 175ccp without touching the heads. I fiqure if I have to go into the heads I can go with the .030s. I may have lost slightly on the bottom end but it was worth having the valvetrain quiet up. I can hear the radio now! I like it and it is very smooth. Another thing is if this engine is rated @ 9:1 why was my ccp so high? A 95 with their stock heads are @ 180ccp and show 9.4:1 in the harley catalog. This is with the 21's and a .030 gasket.
