Title: Soundstream HDHU.14si
Post by: mjb765 on January 13, 2023, 09:39:09 PM
Upgraded the radio on my '18 CVO Road Glide from stock and oh so slow....to the new Soundstream HDHU.14si. Pre-ordered it back in October after I bought, installed and returned a defective GTS unit and got sick of dealing with the scams. ALong with the radio I ordered the Maestro MRR module to retain the factory amps and handlebar controls. Being this is brand new of course there were a few issues---idatalink needed to update the firmware to get the amps to turn on and there was a setting in the radio that Volunteer Audio didn't say anything about that Idatalink told me to use and what to set it to...well--long story short (too late) it all works and sounds great. Ordered the XM module add on and this unit has no GPS so will be using Android Auto. Waze and/or Google maps is more up to date than HD maps could ever be. The radio has gauges, volts, gear indicator, and more....it even reads trouble codes.

Just my $.02 especially for the '14-18 people with the 1st gen GT radios. Also--I know some of you are looking at the '13 and earlier unit. I can just say Soundstream seems to make a good product, and support from Idatalink and Volunteer Audio has been great.

Certainly looks impressive Mike.   Do you know if it has CB support, and can be interrupted by the Roadtech Garmin instructions like the stock unit (yesm I guess Android Auto and Carplay kinda make that obsolete in any case).  I'm guessing it must have DAB radio?

Those would all be questions I never asked.....Never used the CB on the bike and was planning on using Android auto for the GPS.  I never use regular radio---it's either from a flash drive, my phone or Sirius/XM.  I'm sure that these people will have all the answers

I watched the review on this radio and it has me intrigued. I would like a little more volume from my boom 2 without replacing everything. I know I would need to buy a new xm unit but other than that it looks like a good unit. How is the boot up time?

From key off to music from the USB drive about 20 seconds.

Good for you Mike. Looks like a great product. I spoke with Jay at Volunteer audio in the past. He is really good with excellent service. Enjoy the new tunes. Stuart.

Why not just stream XM rather than buy a receiver?

Why not just stream XM rather than buy a receiver?

For the $4/month, $34.99 for the unit and a $75 VISA gift card rebate it was worth it (even without the rebate I would have done it) . That, and I like having it built in. Just something I am used to.

I would buy the separate xm unit cause my wife streams xm from her phone on her bike. Only allowed to sign in one device at a time. I’ve had xm on my bike since I bought it so don’t think I could go without it.  ;D

Mike, I have a question about the bluetooth operation on these units. The owners manual still isn’t listed for the HDHU.9813RG, I’ve looked at the other units owners manual and while there are some differences between them I would guess the main operational features are similar.

In the owners manual (bluetooth page 17-18) it states the microphone has to be connected for phone functions and I’m thinking this is the one supplied with the head units while the sound is thru the bike speakers. It does state the unit connects for input to the phone via bluetooth for music or phone, but nothing about using other bluetooth devices on the output side. I’m interested about listening to music/waze thru headunit when I have my modular helmet on with SENA while viewing waze screen.

My question is do the soundstream units pair up with SENA or other bluetooth headsets with microphones for complete operation?

I would contact Volunteer Audio and ask that question. I don't use any type of headset while on the bike and I ignore phone calls.

Just thought I’d ask, I’m confident the owners manual would address it if option was available, so I’m saying no it doesn’t.  :nixweiss:

It's worth the phone call at least.....

I wouldn’t say that but I was counting on bluetooth output. I think it has to do with licensing agreement on proprietary technology, all the manufactures has this ability. I could just get an iPhone mount on the bike and call it a day. I’ll continue to do some research on this subject.

The unit you have on your bike is nice, but with my antiquated bike there is less to be had. Give a longterm update on it down the road and enjoy.  :2vrolijk_21:

This is above my paygrade for a retrofit, not sure if an aftermarket unit available, maybe oneday if there is a demand.
