Harley synthetic oil
« on: April 14, 2010, 10:19:17 AM »

I was talking to a buddy of mine who is a Harley mechanic at Seacoast Harley in NH. He thinks that the Harley Synthetic oil is made by Amsoil. Any thoughts on this? -Wolfman.

Me thinks your buddy may be mistaken. :nixweiss: Never heard that before... have heard it was made by someone, but don't remember who it was. I would have definitely remembered if it was Amsoil though.

Well, you gotta admit he didn't exactly lie.  Of course, that's a little like saying a Kia is the same formula as a Ferrari, just a little different.  :confused5:

Since Harley is constantly looking for cheaper sources, I wouldn't be surprised if the current supplier is different than the original supplier.  Does China make synthetic motor oil?

They do.  The sludge water pumped from the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers is mixed in a huge industrial blender.  So much yuck in those waters it can't be natural; so must be synthetic.  Then it's bottled and shipped abroad with the lead laced kid's toys and other crap.

I've heard they bid it out, lowest price wins! Not sure if that's true, I haven't researched it, I don't use it so I really don't care.

I'm sure there are hundreds of oil threads, so won't get on the soapbox too much.  The above link is pretty much an ad for Amsoil.  Good stuff, but not exclusive.  Their articles are always misleading on the difference.  The 4 ball results are all actually pretty good.  True synthetic is only available for a few sources.  Mobil is one, Amsoil is one.  Most others are "blends."  Note also, the reference to Sunoco was for petroleum products, not synthetics.

I'm a certified lube technician, so keep a close eye on the realities of synthetics.  They all work pretty good, and the best benefit is cooling of the vtwin.  Wear, etc are smoke and mirrors if the oil is changed per the maintenance chart.

I use Harley synthetic oil for the convenience of letting the dealer take care of it.  If you change your own, feel good about ANY synthetic oil, but change it per the maintenance chart, not some other advertised interval...
