Unfortunate News from Arches National Park
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:27:43 AM »

Just read an AP feed about Wall Arch in Arches National Park having fallen sometime this past week.  According to the report the last major arch in the park to fall was in 1991.  Suppose that gravity or erosion will get all of them over time.  But it's still a little sad.

I've been to this spot a few times.  Have some photos stored away someplace.  For posterity's sake here are a before and after lifted from some web photos.

And here is before Mother Nature did the deed.  As it had stood for at least the term of our own history.

Steve,

If you poke your head in this thread, we did not see this arch when we were there in May.  This one was at the end of the road and we chose to not take a walk to see it...oh well..never will now!

That's one of the more popular arches.  But just to show that even popular sites can be a bit remote the news article said it had fallen some time prior in the week; but they didn't know for sure which day.  No one reported seeing it or being there when it happened.

When I saw this in the news, I wondered what Edward Abbey would have to say.  Probably something about too bad it didn't hit any tourists. ;D
