Do you still have your first HD
« on: April 13, 2015, 01:49:04 AM »

Took delivery of my first HD in January 1997.
FLHTCUI (Ultra Classic Electra Glide) Platinum Silver & Victory Red Sunglo

All stock except for stage 1 cam and genuine slip on's to give the beast some get up and go.
26000 klms and still in new condition.
Bike has been retired for 7 years and proudly sits in her own room.
Cannot find the heart to sell her, to many memories and just keeps catching my eye ever time I walk past her.

I could only wish!! I rode my Uncles '54 almost daily, as he no longer used it. In '69 I bought a '64 wreck from the Rock Hill PD and chopped it.......don't even have a pic.

When i bought this gem, it was one week after getting married. I walked out of the salesmans office with paperwork, and my new bride said "Tell me you didn't just buy a bike" , so  I told my wife this would be our honeymoon ride. Therefore she won't let me sell it. 23k miles of memories on the Ole Dyna so far.

Bought my first in 2010. 07 FLHTCUSE2. Black ice and orange. Love the bike. Have ridden new ones and still like the old one. Call me crazy. Low miles 22K. I am now semi retired so riding more. Thinking about an engine build to preempt the 07 110 20K Blues.

1997, the last year the MoCo gave you the option of fuel injection or carburetor, at least in the U.S.  My '97 FLHTCU had the carb. and was a great bike but not my first HD.  I still kick myself for not taking ownership of my dad's '72 EG.  My first actual HD was an "89 EG classic.  Don't have her anymore but she's still kicking with another owner local to my area....still looks great, too.
Congrats on keeping the '97 and glad she has her own "stall" in the corral....well deserved  :2vrolijk_21:

Nope.......sold it in the late 60s.  Still in the same six or eight boxes it came in.   A step up from baskets.....so couldn't really call it a basket case.  ;)  While the little 45 rigid frame that I traded it for wasn't going to win any beauty contest, at least it ran.   :2vrolijk_21:

Those were the days my friend....we thought they'd never end....

Still have my 2004 Heritage softail that I have extensively modified. I have over 17k miles on this bike and cannot bare the thought of selling it.  I still enjoy riding it and my 2009 FLTRSE3.  I use it for my local short runs and every now and then I will put a few hundred miles on it in a day.

Nope, never could afford to keep any car or motorcycle I didn't use. First Harley was an old 69 Ironhead Sporster I had for awhile while in college First new one was an 84 FLH. Been a dozen or more since then. Kinda funny, at 8 years old my 07 Road Glide is one year shy of being the H-D I've kept the longest.

I'm not sure that was the case I had the option in 03, mine has a carb...not sure if the last year was 03 or 04...

I think it depends on which model you have. If my memory still works,  Harley phased the change in over several years.  I know the first year for FI on the fatboy was '01 (FLSTFI vs FLSTF) and I think the last year for the carb option was '02 on that particular model?

A '73 XLCH I bought new one month before my 18th birthday. A pos that AMF forgot to put piston pin clips in. I made a strocker out of her that would pull wheelies on the freeway all day long. Ended up trading it for mechanical work when I had my business.

Not my 1st, but I've had my 89 FLT for 24 years! I just can't sell it! When all my bros were riding new Harleys it rode with the best of them! While raising a family & a divorce I couldn't afford a new bike. So now my main ride now is a 11 CVO Ultra Classic. My new wife after logging thousands of miles on the FLT still thinks it is more comfortable to her than the CVO. Ya think!

That is correct.  The last year for that option on the Ultra was 1997.  The 1998 Ultra was FI only.  I was going to trade again in '98 but decided to keep the '97 since I didn't have a choice.  They did phase it into the rest of the line-up and eventually the carb went the way of the dinosaur.

No. I traded my 09 RLHRC to get the '14 CVO Limited I have now. I cried like a little girl for ten miles on the way home in the car. My daughter ,who was driving, did her best to console me telling that it was just a motorcycle. I wept and spoke telling her it had a soul. I still miss it and i see it still on the dealer floor every time I do go. If I had the $ I'd get it back and pour somer big HP at it.

I rarely sell or trade anything.

Yes on my first H-D – a 1986 FXR purchased new. It doesn’t appear much like stock anymore and has had engine enhancements and other mods – its a little rocket ship and fun to ride. I run an antique plate on it and show it from time to time. When I’m too old to ride, I’ll give it to my son. I’ve owned multiple scoots before and after, including five Harleys, and as Jerry pointed out - my ‘last’ Harley is in the stable…

No I don't have my first Harley, motorcycle, car, truck or boat! I wish I had them all!

Aussie, If I am understanding the miles on your bike she is just getting broke it!

All, I love the look of the older bikes.  I am so jealous that you have such great bikes!

Jerry you have such a way with words.  But that makes two of us.  I have seen many people swear that would never purchase another HD only to see them pictured with their new scoot some time later.  Well it's there money and there decision and they can support anyone they want.

Again well said, I wish I could come up with something clever once in awhile.

Your right Kiro but it would have to be to be a deal I couldn't refuse.  I'm getting closer to getting the bike completed, I figure about 3 more weeks.  The exhaust just came in today.  So I can get busy on that right away.  Not going to register the SERK right away, hoping to try to sell her or maybe take a tractor in trade, but that could change.  Did allot more to the bike than I planned over the winter.

Good Riding

Nope.  1967 Sportster XLH. 900cc.  Purple & White.  Big White Seat, Saddle Bags, and Windshield, from the Factory.  'Course, I took that chit off.  To me, as a 16 year-old boy, it would fly!  Good Memories.  8) Later--HUBBARD

I was about 18 years old when I bought my first Harley. It was a brand new 1972 XLCH Sportster that was Burgandy in color.  The first day I picked it up and drove over to my girlfriends house (now wife) to wash & wax her up nice. I was so proud.  My future brother in laws had a Norton 750 and the other one had a Triumph Tiger.  After some bragging we decided to ride the back mountain road.  As we started our bikes to get going it was obvious something was wrong.  Long story short my future father in law ran into the garage and got the fire extinguisher to put out the fire on my brand new one day old Harley.   Rare as it was it was not the worst day on that bike.  Having it seize up going way to fast prepared me for flat tracking, after surviving that event I thanked the Lord for sparing me.  Sold the bike and did some flat tracking with a Can Am.  Fast & it finished every race.

1955 Straight leg Pan/Shovel motored Hard tail. Used a girder style no-brake front end with a lot of rake. My kick start daily driver for 15 years. Built it from basket parts, cause it as the only way I could afford to ride a big twin. Kept it almost 30 years, finally selling it to a friends son. I still have "first dibs" if it ever comes up for resale

Well this is my first Harley, but sad to say, it went bye bye many years ago.

Knowing what I know now, having a stroker 1956 KH would be quite the find today.

Sorry for the very poor quality picture, but I carried this picture in my wallet for close to 30 years; I just recently found it.  I used my Digital Ice software on my Epson flat bed scanner and got it this good, but maybe a few hours of point touchup would get it a bit better, but for now, this is it...

Nope, no pictures either.  My first Harley wasn't even all Harley.  It was a an early 60s to mid 70s franken-bike that was mostly a wrecked FL I resurrected.  Bit of welding here and beating there, probably some glue and chewing gum too.  Never had a title.  Rode it harder than it deserved for a couple years as I remember.  Then it died.

Actually buried it when it did.  Friend's family owned the local "chat pile" with a front loader.  We dug a big hole, had a ceremony and made a heluva night of it.

Haha that's awesome!  :2vrolijk_21:

Still have my '95 Fat Boy.  Bought it new in Germany, rode as far as Denmark and Turkey, twice solo across the States, and covered most of the WW2 battle areas in Lux and Belgium. Think this one is a keeper.

funny story.  :huepfenlol2: My first hd was a 1983 or 1984 sporster xlx. One day i decided to take it for spin to another town. On the way back home i felt a funny sensation down in the fun zone. I skidded to an immediate stop only to find that my unit and adjoining area was totally numb! So there i am rubbing myself  walking around in circles on the side of the highway with everyone driving by looking. Finally i regained feeling ( i was worried ). i rode directly to the hd shop and got a 1984 frs. problem solved!!

I think it depends on which model you have. If my memory still works,  Harley phased the change in over several years.  I know the first year for FI on the fatboy was '01 (FLSTFI vs FLSTF) and I think the last year for the carb option was '02 on that particular model?

I know the 03 Fatboy you could get the carb still.  All my friends gave me crap for buying Fuel Injected, told me you could not modify it.

My 03 FLTSFI is my first new Harley, and I still have it.  I have just over 40K miles on it.  But have had many bikes after it, which have all been traded with more miles on them.

I have more money in this fatboy than I do any CVO..

Oh, I know how that works  :huepfenlol2:  I actually keep a running list of parts and labor for all the work I did and had done to my '01 FLSTFI. I did some math a few years ago --- it seems somehow @ $43,000 has been tossed at the bike - including the original purchase price  :o  It's not going anywhere anytime soon, unless of course that old saying about "there's an a** for every seat" really is true, and that a** has a whole lot of money they want to trade for the bike.

Luckily for me it is still my favorite bike to take for a ride.

1974 FX , new in Dec. 73. Now 96". Modified a Softail primary and 5 speed to get the modern electric starter. The bike has well over 100,000 miles with many rebuilds.

Mine was a 1991 1200 sporty.  A buddy was behind on the payments, paid it off. Put 75k miles on it, 2 trips to Sturgis w/ girlfriend, sold it for a $5,500 profit to go towards 95 Fatboy!  Miss both those old tough / beautiful girls!

2010 Heritage I bought in 2009. Served me well for five years. Looked as good the day I traded it on my current bike, a CVO Road King, as it did the day I bought it. There was nothing wrong with it, but the only way I was getting the King was to trade the Heritage.

2001 cvo switchblade, still in the garage. Prior to H-D's it was two stroke Suzuki street bikes. 550 air cooled and 750 water cooled. Those things were pretty cool look them up.

Well, technically my first HD I owned for about 5 minutes and actually took delivery of my second before I even picked up my first.  :coolblue:

I had the second VRod in the state reserved in my name when it came out in 2002. Went to the dealer to see the first one delivered since I had never seen one live. I thought it was cool but as soon as I saw the Road King Classic in pearl white they were uncrating knew I had bought the wrong bike. My VRod was still a few weeks away and I was about to go back in to the sales guys office and tell him to unwind the deal but my buddy said I should run an ad and see if I could flip it since the demand for them was so high. (Not so much now)

So I did and had several people offer me several grand over MSRP for my place. Hah, go figure. Ended up selling it to a dealer in Daytona who wanted it.

In the meantime I bought the RK, and loved it till 05. I hit a 6' micro lam in the middle of the hiway doing 70mph. Bike flipped 3 times and was totaled otherwise I likely would still own it.

1948 Panhead 48FLxxx13 .. ..
Yep ... I bought her in late 1983 a few months before my 1st child was born ... So I introduce her as Pre-Kids .. LOL
She has gone through several morphs over the years.. This is the latest and I think the best..  a small list of specs:
Original 1948, cases, jugs, heads and frame.
B grind cam, 80 Flywheels, jugs bored 30 over so right about 83 inches
Transmission ratchet top circa 1955 as best as we can tell, All Andrews gears, reversed shift pattern, one up, three down .. Nobody can get on her and just ride ... LOL
Had to change all lighting to LED's dash, and taillight (Except headlight ,. so far it will last a season) as the vibration keeps destroying bulb filaments

She'll take most 88's in the 8th ... She's a screamer ... and my first love ...

Yep, still have my first one - 883 Sportster Hugger March 2001 - just can't bring myself to sell it.

My first Ultra was the exact same colour as yours - an FLHTCU though, not an FLHTCUI as it was not injected.

Yes.   20 year old Cruiser vs the new Touring bike.   I have no desire to sell it and as long as it gets rides around town or short jaunts why would I?    $25 a month for full coverage plus accessories is fine with me.
