BS topic
« on: May 04, 2007, 11:59:10 AM »

Well, there may already be a topic for this, if so, my apologies. I just need a place to post general off the wall BS.

There's a local guy I know who has either an 05 or 06 Wide Glide. It's got 500 miles on it (I think). He obviously never rides it. It's a pretty stock bike by the appearance. The only think I noticed was V&H pipes. I've teased him for over a year now that I'm going to ride it for him or the wheel bearings will rust up. Well, yesterday he tells me thew battery is dead. He said, go get it, ride it, clean it, whatever you wanna do. I just went by there and it's in an old concrete block shed with the garage doors stuck open. He'd taken the seat off to check the battery and it was over on the floor. The front tire is almost flat and there's dust on it 2" thick. With 500 miles on it!!!

I just came from there and attached the battery tender. It wouldn't even begint to take a charge. I took the battery off and took it home and put it on a regular charger. Nothing. I called him and told him I was going to Abernathy's today or tomorrow and would he re-imburse me for a battery. He agreed. So, I'm going to get it running, bring it to the house, and clean it up and ride it a little.

I think after I get it all fixed up, I'll keep it under lock and key at my house. He doesn't deserve a Harley. If he wants to ride it, I'll tell him he'll have to contact me. Afterwards, he should bring it back and I'll leave it in my garage. LOL

Not a bad price for the bike (cost of a new battery) If he pays for the battery then you will have to give him the bike back when he asks for it :)

I won't let him have it until he proves to me, he'll keep it in better shape!

There was dead grass all over the garage from lawn clippings. The seat was tossed on the concrete right in the middle of a pile of dead grass. The front spokes had rust dripping off of them. I wonder what the best thing is to get some of the rust off? A wire brush on a disk Grinder?

Well, I picked up a battery for it today. It fired right off. He bought the bike in May of 05, had a new battery installed in June of 06 and I put a new battery on it today. The front tire had about 5 pounds of pressure. I only live like 1/2 mile away, so I made it home. Aired the tire up, finished bolting in the battery and rode a little. 306 miles on it. Third battery, that's a battery every 100 miles! Drug some of the cobwebs and bird's nests off of it and then washed it. IT's RED! I thought it was tan! There is rust & canker all over the chrome. It was really sad. I polsihed a few pieces of the chrome after washing it, and it's cleaning up pretty nice. It doesn't look like the same bike.

I have a 4 year old camper I've been trying to sale. Think I'll offer him the camper for the bike. He won't take me up on it, but, if he does. Cool.

He doesn't deserve to own it.

Yeah, what Gary said!  Let's see the POS before you get 'er all purdy again!

That really is sad.  Sounds like a case of more $$$ than sense.  At least you rescued it before it rotted away! :2vrolijk_21:

What's it worth? 2005 Wide Glide, pretty much basic w/o accessories. It does have V&H pipes that look like open pipes. Otherwise pretty much stock. Keep in mind the rust problem, (will it keep coming back?) and the low milage.

Hold your horses, don't cleaner up too much...it might just provide the twinke that drew him to her in the first place. I would replace all the dust, dirt, grime, and cob webs and then offer the trailer. JMHO.   :apple:

I've been cleaning on the WG all weekend. Damn, that's a job. Some of the rust is already pitted and will robably always give problems. My Bagger was in the shop yesterday for 5,000 mile service and a few odd things. SO, I took the WG on a poker run. Rode her 150 miles and had a blast. I would NEVEr give up my bagger, but gotta say, the WG was fun to ride. I ate a lot of bugs, ate a lot of road litter from sand, and yard clippings as everyone was mowing yesterday. Took a little getting used to with all the wind. I'm thinking a full face shield. I finally took off the brain bucket and made it better with just a dew rag. The first stop was at Abernathy's HD in Union City. A buddy was getting a new clutch cable on his Street Glide, so I decided to wait for him. They told him it would only take a few minutes. It took 2 hours. We finally left and met up with some more buddies at the next stop. Bewteen the second and third stops, one guy's saddlebag blew off. So, we made a pit stop by his house to drop it off there. I'm attaching a few photos of the WG.
