Title: Handlebar help
Post by: bigchuck on January 09, 2019, 08:04:08 PM
I'm looking at bars for my '15 CVO Limited. I'm 6'4" with a 34" inseam. I have a  stock hammock seat. I want to raise my hands so that they are even with the batwing fairing or partially above as in half of the grip above top edge of fairing would be ok. I also need them to pull back 2" or so. I like the look of the 10" Yaffe bars but read how they don't have much pullback. I will be staying with the stock heated grips. I will be doing the install myself. Any help or suggestions that would help me get this done right the first time be greatly appreated. This is will be the first time that I have had any bars other than stock on any bike. Thanks

Have a look at KST Kustoms Bars. Put a set of 12" on my 18 CVO Limited and really like them & the price is good also... I'm 6'4 with 32" Inseam...

Thanks. I have checked out most major brands. I'm looking for some real world feedback

Where are your hands in relation to fairing height wise? Did you pull them back towards you to straighten your back? Also what style did you get?

Think I got the double mayhem bars.  My hands are pretty much to  top of fairing or little bit higher.  I did pull bars back some, could use a little more pull
Back but it’s a pain to take fairing off. So just gonna leave where they are.

I am 6'2" and experienced pain between my scapulae when I took a decent ride. I have a 2014 RK CVO. I put on the Wild Ones Reapers 14" and LOVE them. The pain is absolutely gone. In fact I have three bikes. I have a 2017 Triumph Bobber and placed the factory apes on as soon I I got them as the bars were way too low for me at my age especially. They were so comfortable, it was the inspiration for the Road King. The dealer placed another bar on first as the Wild Ones were backordered and I turned around and had them remove them and waited for the bars I wanted. I will never ride another touring or cruising bike again without these bars. Real world experience.

PS: This is NOT an inexpensive mod. Labor is about $1000

I would highly recommend 12" Yaffe Monkey bars. I had them on my 11 Batwing. I'm 6'2" with 34" inseam and they worked perfectly and the wind over the faring comes just over the top of your hands so that they are not so exposed to the cold air in the winter months. They also have plenty of adjustment for pullback. You can start by lining them up with your forks and adjust them more towards you if necessary.

Thanks for the information guys. I think I will go around to dealerships and other places that have bikes and see if others will let me set on their bikes to see how they feel. My main dilemma is 10" or 12". I'm leaning towards 10" if they don't come down too much when I pull them back to me.

This is true if you let the dealer do the swap. I pulled the bars & wires out of old bars. Then took bars to a independent shop & they ran the wires inside bars for me for $75.00 then came back home & re installed bars.. It wasn't too bad except on the Limited bikes pretty much have to remove the fairing.  Total I have around $320.00 in the bars.. Dealer wanted over $700.. No thanx...

It is not just wires you need to run. Brake and clutch lines need to be changed. The risers should be changed out for heavy duty risers with apes. A new clamp with a second set of set screws should also be used to prevent rotation. This is a significant job.

Certainly, the 10" handlebar is too little difference to the original handlebar, which probably has about 9".
I guess you should go with the 12" handlebar.

Something to look into. Does anyone know what stock height is?

With advice from here.....a few you-tube videos......one can certainly be more competent than most dealership hacks!

I didn't have to extend brake or clutch cables when I went to 12" bars... If you go more than 12" you will have to extend the cables..

I’ve had both Wild One 10” and 12.5”. Really good fit and finish and both were very comfortable. The 10” my hands were just below the fairing and on the 12.5” just above it. One note with the 10” I felt I could maneuver better at low speeds. In both cases I was on a HD CVO Heated Hammock Seat.

I agree, the diff between the stock and 10" is very little. I went for 12" Yaffe and could not be more happy with the set. I did it myself on older '14 Ultra Limited and it all went thru just fine except on one side i discovered i missed one wire and hell broke loose when i tried to pull the wires back up, etc.. when you have to worry about Heat Grips it adds an extra care (esp. when Yaffe design is not really curved like the Wild1 out there). Nevertheless, you can find very nice UTube video from a guy who did it on his SG - great video. If you need more info info you can PM me and do my best to help. My current CVO luckily already came with 14" and I almost cant tell the diff between this and the 12".
Hope this helps.

How do they interact with the stock mirrors?  I’m 6’1” with same inseam.  Looking at getting 10” bars but not sure.   Did you install yourself?

No problems with stock mirrors. Yes I installed bars myself. Removed wires from stock bars took to indy shop paid tech $75 to run wires internal. Only reason I have heated grips & didn't feel like messing with trying to run wires. Wasn't too bad doing the job. The Limited faring has to be removed completely thou...

the fairing did not have to come off completely, you only need to release, lift it and let it rest diagonally. make sure to pad the front fender well. here's a great link to follow instructions:

I'm removing the fairing for an amp and speaker upgrade.  Can't afford the dealer costs, but darn... you guys are making think to buy the bars and add this to the work effort.
I'm thinking 12".
