Title: Extended Warranty from Harley?
Post by: Heavy on February 25, 2004, 12:45:47 PM
I am picking up my bike and am on the fence for the extended warranty from Harley. the dealer is telling me that it is 1299.00 for the total of 7 years 2 year standard and an extra 5. Did you all buy any type of Warranty and is it worth it.

Thanks
Heavy

The warranty cost is negotiable.  Chicago HD will sell it to you for 10% less and you can get it from them, even out of state (we're in Calif).

I'll be getting it, when my bike gets here next week.  My dealership is mod friendly and they don't negate responsability unless the issue is related to the modification, per the Magnussen Moss Warranty Act.

I used it on my Ultra Classic several times and it provides a piece of mind.  My issues on that bike were things like: inner primary leak, stator, electrical issues, etc.

I went with the 7-yr...it is well worth it.  Guys I know who have used it swear by it.  You figure any leak costs at least $400 to fix.  And all accessories that were ordered with the bike are covered too...BONUS!

It being a Harley makes it almost a no brainer on whether to get the extended or not. I've used mine on my Ultra a couple of times, pretty much same stuff as JCZ.
I think the magic number is around 25000 miles. Little stuff starts going wrong.
Especially a bike with a lot of electrical/electronic stuff.

My understanding is that you can actually get 11yrs of warranty on a HD.  [smiley=bigok.gif]

Uhhhhhh ..... I bought the 7 year extended warranty. Hell, it only cost me 2 bux! HD finance knocked a full 2% off the interest rate as an incentive. I couldn't pass that up. The only problem is now I want to do all these engine mods that'll void my warranty anyhow! What was I thinkin?
 [smiley=dunce.gif]

The Magnussen Moss Warranty Act says that the failure has to be "directly related" to the modification in order for the warranty to not be honored.  That doesn't mean that a dealership will not claim that it's voided.  It depends on the attitude of your dealership and how willing you are to push it to the limit.

I'm the kind of guy that will fight to the end, for my rights.  But I also have the added advantage of having a dealership that doesn't play the warranty game unless it is directly related.  My mods were never a question regarding warranty claims on stator, inner primary leak, electrical prolbems, seat split at the seams, etc.

I read that earlier in the discussion but I thought that even some SE parts will void the warranty. Meaning any crossed flag stuff. I just figured this must be a new HD stance or something. That is great info to have just in case I do encounter warranty issues with the dealer!

I truly appreciate your insight!!!
Thanx muchly!

If any of you guys ever need a copy of the Magnussen Moss Warranty Act, just send me an email and I'll send it.

This is where education is a good thing. lol [smiley=1syellow1.gif]

I was told by my dealer that any mods that I included prior to delivery would still be covered by warranty.  They said that if I mod the engines afterwards, it would possibly void it (under Magnuson) but that if they did it all prior to my buying it, that it would be OK.  My brother bought my Road King 95 Stage II and bought a warranty with it, and they didn't say anything about his mods at all.  No problem they said.

The way it was explained to me you can buy up to 7 yrs of warranty and at the end of that you can extend it another 4 yrs for a total of 11 yrs.  It is all from HD.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Ok guys and gals the scoop on the last 4 yrs of extended warranty are paper work must be filled out and turned in 2 weeks before the current warranty expires and you can'nt have more than 50,000 miles on the bike.  :(  I will have that on the bike in 2-3yrs so I guess it won't work for me.

My dealer advised me  not to purchase the extended warranty until the two year warranty is nearly expired he sugguests about 22 months out.

There is no benefit in an early purchase, and there is not problem with signing on later. Check it out

My feeling is that these V-Twins are still close to 1950's tractor motors. Don't be afraid to get the shop manual and work on the thing yourself. You might end up like me. I converted a bedroom in the house to the HD garage. Patio, french doors, diamond plate on the walls. plumbed for compressed air, a handy lift and beer fridge. I started out with 1 98 king and learned little by little. On the new one I just finished the heads cams, new primary gearing and a six speed. Did it all myself and bought the tools as I went along. All this probably saved me about $3,500 this time around. This lets you view the warranty in a whole different light. Plus I don't want some of those guys at the dealership working on my bike. The question was how to get 11yrs of warranty.  So you start with the 2yr then buy 5yr extended warranty then when you are close to the end of the 7yrs of warranty (2weeks before the 7yrs are up) you extend the warranty for 4yrs more if you don't have more than 50,000 miles on your bike.  Yah right who would have a 7yr old bike with less than 50,000 miles on it.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

My dealership doesn't know anything about an 11 year warranty......but maybe that's because being in Calif. we all ride (more miles than the max. limit).

I can tell you that the extended warranty price is negotiable!  And that is just one of the reasons that I was so happy with my dealership.  I'm sworn to secrecy as to the details however, you can check out Chicago HD as to their discount on the Extended Warranty.  Mine included the tire and wheel coverage, also.

I bought my warranty directly from www.harleyextendedwarranty.com and saved a lot from what my dealer was charging!   I already used it when I ran over a 2" bolt in my rear tire.   Didn't pay 1 cent to a new tire installed at my local harley dealership.
