New to me FXR2 (yes, it's red)
« on: March 20, 2018, 08:45:14 PM »

This just got here today.  It's dirty but it's all there.  Knew it wasn't running right from the prior owner.  Only a few hundred miles in its last six to seven years.  It's got some carb issues.

Will only idle at about half choke.  Dies under hard acceleration and coming off power.  Ran well enough for me to get it home though.  Only had about a mile ride from where I met the semi that carried it here from Pennsylvania.  It died four or five times getting here but started up again while rolling each time so no drama and didn't have to push it.

Worst part was getting it started after the semi unloaded.  Battery was dead but even with a jumper on it the little bitch just did not want to start in the 45 degree weather this afternoon.  Flooded it (of course) but finally got it running in the parking lot of the closed-for-business grocery story where I met the truck.  After that its first ride limped it here.

Tomorrow will look at the carb but may just do one of the Mikuni "easy kits."  Aside from the basic dirty it picked up in route it's actually a really clean old bike.  Nice condition and just a nice old bike.  Tires are two years old and almost no miles.  Fresh fluids last fall (I'm told) but will change again.  Flush brakes.  Get it running right and that'll be about it.  Don't plan on changing or adding much aside for some LED bulbs for better visibility and doing something with the forward controls.

At sometime in its life the stock mid controls were removed and replaced with the forwards on it now.  I don't fit forward controls well.  Still torn between finding bits and pieces to put the mids back on it or just going with floorboards.  Leaning toward boards....

Anyway, here's the new toy.

That's it for now. Better weather a little later in the week.  Fortunately I'm off all week too.  So with a little luck parts will get here in time to have it both cleaned up well and running right by the weekend.  That's the plan anyway.....

Really nice bike. My first Harley was a 1991 FXRS Convertible. Great bike. It took me to Sturgis and back twice back in the 90s. Congrats

Been out wiping to down some tonight and giving it its first mod.  Little aftermarket garage door opener that works great and hides completely  :drink: .

Pulled the air cleaner off thinking I'd mess with the old CV first.  Who knows; maybe get out cheap.  Sometime in its 20 year history someone has been there before me though.  Some "vintage" upgrades that I never liked that well to begin with.  It probably ran fine for years.  But I don't think I'll try to both make it right and chase someone else's "upgrades" now.  Probably time for a new carburetor.

Good looking bike and the best color.  Will be a lot of fun to rip up the roads in your area on that one.

...and the mods begin  :huepfenlol2: .

Ok, not so much.  Oil and other fluids changed today.  Little (and surprisingly slick and inexpensive) garage door opener installed last night.  Today, wow, major electronics upgrade.  Daymaker headlight and Silverstar bulbs everyplace else.

New carburetor will (hopefully) be here tomorrow.  Even not running right now I know its faster with the headlight installed.

Thanks Neal.  I'm thinking it'll be a fun toy.  I don't ride the big baggers much locally so it may become the local hopper and day tripper.

Never shoulda sold my FXR3.  Super fun bike, though the old Evo really needed another 50 hp.  Can’t imagine what that motor in a bagger would’ve been like back in the day.  Enjoy!
