First of all Find a new dealer....second it is measured with the a micrometer. You mount it to the crank case and spin the engine over by hand to measure. Do this by removing the spark plugs, jack up the rear tire, put in 5th or 6th gear and rotate.

Tell them to read the literature that HD sends them, specifically TT324 (tech tip 324). Search here and you are sure to find a copy. Send one to your old dealer and bring one with you to the new dealer.

What's the name of that dealership?  I want to make sure they're on my list of "never to take my bike in to" dealers.   :o

Unless you managed to talk to the one dealership person left on the planet who hasn't heard all about the crank issues on '07 and later Harley's, I would guess they are jerking your chain because they don't want to mess with doing the check.  Why were you asking them, do you have issues that could be caused by a bad crank, or are you just nervous after reading all the horror stories?  Doing the pinion shaft runout check, which is pretty much all you can do without removing the crank from the engine, requires a decent amount of disassembly.  As in removing the right side exhaust and floorboard, removing the cam chest cover, removing the cam plate and cams (which in turn requires removing pushrods and lifters), etc.   The dealership isn't going to do all that for free, and H-D isn't going to pay them to do it either unless there is a failure that would require doing this.

Give us a little more detail.  And like the guys said, if they weren't just playing with you and really don't know how to check it, run, don't walk, to a different shop.

The engine has got some major problems with top end, heads were ported,se hc pistons,se 258 cams,
comp test results were bad, leak down test bad also, oil smelled burnt, had the dealer pull top end apart
to find problem, heads were ported by an unknown person at this time, valves guides in bad shape,
port job looks like, well very hacked ,I beleave this was the start of all the problems,I requested the
crank run out to be checked and they told me there was no way to do it,when I went to dealer fri
the SM told me the only way to really check correctly was to remove the crank from the cases,
I was looking to buy this bike from a freind but !!! :nixweiss:
To get the oil to smell burnt this bike had to get extreamly hot I dont trust the bottom end :nixweiss:
