2011 vs. 2012 sound system differences
« on: September 27, 2011, 02:21:02 PM »

Awhile ago I put a list together to add a sound system to my 2010 using 2011 parts.  Does anybody have the part numbers for the 2012 and do you know what the differences are?  I know the 2012 comes with the Zumo 660, but does it also still have the iPod pocket?  I already ordered the parts to retrofit the windshield part. Now I want to do the sound.  I looked at a 2012 today but forgot to look for the music connections.  Any help would greatly be appreciated. I already own a Zumo 660.

John, when I was at Sturgis this year, I was told by the reps that the bike does not have an ipod this year.  It has the 660 that has the ipod incorporated into it, so you can listen to music and then garmin will interrupt the music with commands of where to turn, why you didn't turn when she said to turn, what to do next to make up for it, and what not.   :P  You said you ordered the windshield but have you confirmed it is in stock yet or where are you at on that issue?   Pork

I have everything coming but 3 items which are scheduled early October.  I didn't get the specifics.

Windshield is last thing on back order until 10-31.  All other parts are shipping tomorrow.

John,

Did you ever go ahead and retrofit the 2011/2012 sound system to your 2010 windshield? I am considering this again and was wondering how you made out.

Thanks,

You might consider the J M speakers.  I have these on my 2010 Con and they work very well with my ipod and they look good on the 2010 bars.

I still plan on doing this, just not enough money yet.  I'll post when I get it done.  I also want to put forward controls on.  I'm sick of the floor boards scraping every time I go around a corner.

These look pretty nice.  How is the sound compared to the factory system?  They're about 1/3 of the cost.  Do you think there is enough power for loud exhaust?

This is an interesting option especially if there is enough room to mount them directly to the back of the 2010 fairing. I would guess a mount would have to be fabricated but my goal is to be able to keep my bars clean when the fairing is off the bike.

Mike,
Since I have never experienced the sounds on a '11 or '12,  I can not answer that question.   My bike is moderate on loud, SE slipon's and windshield similar to '12, and I can easily hear tunes at 65-70 mph.  At 55 mph, they will blow you away.

Speakers have a amp in them and they are very loud setting still playing my ipod.  Wind noise is the limiting factor to hearing at speed.  I used to ride with headphones inside of helmet, which wind limited the sounds.  This system is much better for me.  I really can't imagine that you would need anything louder without damaging your hearing.

I considered mounting a faring just for the tunes, but dashed that once I found these speakers.   Sorry that I don't know about loud pipes, but I would rather damage my hearing from "rock music" than "harley music". :orange:

That last comment was suppose to go to RC flyer,  this one to Mike.   ;)

I think that the speakers look pretty good without the fairing, but they would be rather easy to mount somewhere else if you are good at that kind of thing.   The mount is a flange that goes right onto the bolt that hold your grip assembly.  It comes with extra long bolts and some spacers.  You could make a U of metal that would probably work.  I'm not sure where you would put them though,  they are pretty thick.
