Raced a custom chopper yesterday!
« on: February 01, 2012, 01:06:34 PM »

My buddy has a custom chopper with a 113 Rev Tech 5 speed.  The motor is supposed to make 115hp according to the specs.  His bike is a rigid with 250 tire.  Probably weighs maybe 500 pounds, it's bare bones.

He kept chirping about his bad a$$ chopper all day so I decided to give him a try.  We went from a 2nd gear roll and he ain't chirping no more! ;D

I pulled him pretty bad which surprised me.  He used to kill my Ultra with a 98" motor.  My SESG felt stronger to me but not that strong.

I'm pretty happy with how my bike runs  :huepfenjump3:

I was just by Hotop's shop last night.  Went to BJ's Performance and bought some Redline oil and No I wouldn't race one of Hotop's choppers. LOL  He builds some fast bikes.  Look me up when you get back.

I bought my bike used with the motor work done.  My mods are in my sig.  I talked to the shop that did the motor and they installed cams, ported the heads and intake. Stock pistons, rods.  Compression is 10:1.  I have Vance n Hines X head pipe and Rinehart 4" slip ons.  The shop is well known for their tuning ability.  I'm not crazy about the SERT on my bike but it seems to run good.  I just wish I could do some of my own tuning if I make any changes later.

What shop did the work?

Hotop does all of the work on my buddy's bikes.  He's a hell of a cool guy on top of being a talented wrench!

I lived in Mt. Pleasant for 10 years until 2008.  Most of my family is still around there.

I can't remember the name of the shop but it's a Harley dealer in Maryland.  They have a tech there that used to have a speed shop.  He did all the porting and motor work.  I talked to the service manager about the build and he said they have done several bikes with this set up and it's the best combo they have used to date.

From what he said they do a lot of training on how to tune a bike on the dyno for other dealerships??

I really don't know of any good Harley dealers as far as motor work in our part of the country??  At least no dealer has a stellar reputation that I'm aware of.  I think most send there heads out to be ported etc and just do tear down and assembly.

When I did my 98" kit on my Ultra I bought the kit from GMR and installed it myself.

What we need is a Don Hotop kind of guy that works in a Harley shop.  That's basically what the dealer in Maryland has.

I like to find a combo that is proven and copy it, no sense trying to re-invent the wheel.

Out of curiosity, are you sure those are the stock pistons?  At 10:1, they're not the stock conpression.  Those are stout numbers, no doubt; and would reflect the possibility of upgraded pistons.  Maybe it's the headwork and tuning.

All my 110s have the H-D upgrade kit with hi-comp pistons, 259E cams, etc., and run V&Hs with AN Big Sucker.  I get 111-115hp and 114-119tq across the board.

In any case, that Woods TW-9B is an incredible cam I may have to try.

I talked to the engine builder and he confirmed stock pistons.  For lack of a better term they decked the heads to raise compression.

I have seen another dyno chart from a different bike with this combo from the same engine builder and the HP numbers are identical but the TQ number was a tad higher because of a different slip on pipe.

Here is a link to the thread about the other bike.  By the way my bike belonged to this guy's business partner.  Evidently they both decided to do the exact same build, just with different slip ons.
