Scared to buy a 2019 CVO Road Glide
« on: March 24, 2019, 11:38:21 AM »

So after being out of Harley’s for 10 years, and being into BMWs, I read these forums and watch YouTube videos, and I see all this stuff about fluid migration, sumping, stiff clutch levers, etc.  Why do I still want to buy a 2019 CVO?   Are the issues overly exaggerated?

I bought a 19 CVO road glide. So far so good. Not one issue with what you are worried about.     Stuart.

People tend to post mostly  negative stuff, the good stuff usually doesn't get a fair shake.  I have a 17' CVO with 6500 miles so far that I ride pretty hard and no issues.  I came from Sport bikes and still own a few, as a matter of fact we just picked up the baby BMW Café Racer for my other half so we can have an occasional sport day ride (She rides a Sporty 48). My Ducati's have been collecting dust I ride my Harley so much!

I brought my new 2018 CVO Road Glide home at the end of December 2017. I've had no mechanical issues at all. I blew one of my saddlebag speakers and had it replaced under warranty and a headlight adjustment issue right out of the box but that's it other than money spent on mods like a new windshield, highway pegs, bars, lowers, oil cooler fan, Kury lic. plate frame, the complete Fullsac treatment, a quick release matching King Tour Pak, and a few other little goodies, this is by far the best Harley I have ever owned. Everything about it is amazing. Oh, and I have 14,000 miles on it already.

I would do it again in a heartbeat!

What has turned you south on BMWs?

I bought a 2019 CVO Ultra Limited in September and have put 4300 miles on it. I traded my 2008 GoldWing and a 2016 Ultra Limited in on it. The 2019 CVO handles, rides and performs much better than the 16 Ultra Limited and my wife likes the ride better than the GoldWing. I have not had any issues with my CVO.

I have completed a 3300 mile ride and a 2400  miles ride since May 2019. I have not had a issue with my 2019 CVO. I now have 11750 miles and running strong.

I have a 2018 cvo street glide.  I LOVE it.

No issues and no regrets.

I told my friends if I had to get rid of all of my toys and just keep one, I'd keep the cvo street glide.

The only change I made to this bike is the magnaflow knockouts.  Damn do they sound good.

I'm going riding right now.  Bye.

Are you a gambler?  Roll the dice, it's only $45,000 dollars, who knows you may get a good one.

This is preposterous.  If what you imply is true, then dealer service departments across the nation would be backed up with M8s.  That is just not the case.

My dealer (which is high volume sales) is not seeing this.  They have had fewer than 5 over 2+ years of m8s.

Here is how my dad explained word of mouth advertising.

If you go to a restaurant and have a great meal/time/service, you tell a few people about it.

If you go to a restaurant and have a bad meal/time/service, you tell EVERYONE you know.

Bad news spreads like a wildfire. Good news trickles out. Even newscasts start with the big, dramatic bad news stories. They save the feel good ones until the end.

My 2017 has 10k miles, no issues. Been all over Arkansas two up going as fast as mountains allowed, been to Galveston doing 90+ on I-45 for a few hours (or as long as gas tank lasted). No issues to date, clutch recall done and neck bearings tightened. I hope it continues to be the best bike I have owned. I feel for those who have had issues. But not all Harleys are perfect, and neither am I.

On my 2017 CVO limited I have had a new oil pump, clutch servo and one speedometer. Harley will not replace the speedometer again. It still leaks. Just hit 30,000 miles.

I agree that these sumping and bad lifter and tranny fluid migrations issues are rare, very rare, but not rare enough. I've owned  harleys since 2008:
2007 Ultra, had to buy an isolator rear pully to get rid of bucket of bolts noise in 5th gear, no help from the motor company.
2009 Ultra had to buy a compensator and lifters with no help from the motor company.
2012 CVO lost a valve spring so full rebuild on my nickle, had to pay for a shifter shaft stripped out on my nickle. Did the lifters as preventative maintenance every 15k miles.
2013 RGU very noisy lifters at 7 k miles, motor company said they all do that, replaced and fixed on my nickle.
2018 Heritage 114 Sumped at anything over 60mph for more than 20 miles. Riding around town no problems....dealer said it was the K&N oil filter I installed at 3k miles.  Lost my butt in a trade and traded for a 4 year old

2014 Limited with 4 k miles on it.  Bought the extended service plan, lost the water pump at about 7k miles replaced under esp with same style (not the new style) pump.
So the idea that you may or may not get a "good one" is indeed gambling because you have no way to predict.  Lifters and water pumps are small change, but a sumping motor is a major failure and anything more than one is a trend in my opinion.

With what a CVO costs one should expect a trouble free motor at least, at the very least.  These motor do not put out the horsepower and torque that one would expect to lead to premature failure.  They are usually not ridden in a manner that would lead to premature failure.
I really like my 12 CVO SG but got tired of things breaking.  I really like my 18 Heritage 114.  Blast to ride, but unreliable, could not take it on a 6600 mi cross country trip (Run for the Wall) because it was sumping and the dealer said "I'll call Harley."  So my 14 Limited still failed with the water pump but was fixed quickly.

Go ahead, roll the dice.

I feel your pain. I just traded for a '19 CVO RG Mako. Its a beautiful motorcycle, something I've never truly concerned myself with, actually something to be proud of.  I wasn't sure about it for the same reasons. I'm still not 100% sure but I've traded and I'm not looking back. The bike has 800 miles and I haven't had any problems. I've got two years of factory warranty if there's a problem it should surface before then. So for the next two years I'm going to ride this machine, enjoy the power, and when I get off and walk away, I'm going to turn and admire the coolness because its mine. A CVO was what got me interested in a touring Harley. It took me three years but I got one, finally.

I put right at 21K miles on a 17 CVO street glide.  No issues

I put 24500 miles on a 18 CVO road glide, sumped a little, but knew what to expect rode easy for 10 miles and back to normal.

I have 4300 miles on my 19 CVO Road glide.  No issues yet.
