Road King Kicked My Ass
« on: August 01, 2019, 11:53:56 PM »

It was a short ride.  From standing beside the bike on the lift to banging my side off the rear of lift, dinging up some ribs, and falling backwards and rolling for (probably) 10,000 yards.

Noticed a couple days ago the bike had a small primary leak.  One of the two seals; so just changed them both.  Putting it all back together and pulling on the compensator nut when, suddenly, everything turns loose.  On the miles long walk back home from the roll away from the bike I'm thinking the socket slid off the nut.  Upon closer inspection the damn compensator nut split.

It's been on and off a few times in its life.  Still surprised the thing split though.  Even at 95 ft pds plus the angle it's not that much torque.  In any case with the exception of the sore ribs I'm just very glad whatever flaw it was in the nut that turned loose did it now rather than sometime later on the road.

Stupid comp nut.....

Oh yeah, we know it was all me!  On top of that I'm sure I was only using a 3/8 ratchet (6" long) and just my left hand.  Definitely all me :huepfenlol2: !

The more I've thought about this no matter what was the cause I'm so glad it happened there on the lift and knocked me on my ass.  On the road that failure could have been anywhere from seemingly like a normal old fashioned loose compensator nut to a ruined crankshaft.  So, I'm good  :apple: .

No clue Ron.  I have to assume it had a flaw that after a few installs and untold miles finally gave up when being given 100 ft pds and 45 degrees (probably plus a little).  Without an x-ray or other inspection that I'll never do won't know.  I had another one in the parts cabinet so it didn't even slow up the reassembly.

Once I stumbled up to the bike last night and saw what had happened I was... well... mildly disconsolate with the part.  Yeah, we'll go with that.  So I stepped out the garage door and threw the bitch as far as I could.  There's live water on that side of the house (normally dry bed but it's been raining) so no telling how far the damn thing sailed downstream.

When I work on the primary on my '02 I just torque that nut to the torque spec in the service manual and do not do the torque plus angle.  I vaguely recall a change bulletin from the MoCo on this but never had an issue using loctite red and torquing to spec per the service manual.

If I remember correctly (so probably not) the torque spec was 135.  I've seen several loose comp nuts using whatever was the old torque spec though; including my own.  So I went ahead and started using the 95 ft pds and 45 degrees and red Loctite.  Fortunately haven't had a loose one doing it that way.  Of course now I've jinxed it so something will start rattling tomorrow!

Don,

With bad ribs it probably didn't actually make it as far as the water and is now laying in the yard just waiting on the mower to find it. Then the mower is next on the lift. Or at least that is how my luck goes

I'm glad I wasn't there to see that.  I would have felt terrible for laughing.

Well, at first anyway.
