I was told by the sales manager at the local HD dealer that the 2009's have a feature that shuts down the rear cylinder at idle to reduce heat. He said that when the throttle is at idle the rider can roll the throttle grip forward and it shuts down the rear cylinder. The cylinder relights when throttle is opened. I was talking to him about the CVO Ultra so I'm not sure if this is just on 110's or all 09's.
Anyone else heard this?
:nixweiss:
-
yes , the engine temp management system has been in the software for a while. But the 09s may have some advanced features in the software.
-
The video that I watched on HD web site is for all of the touring models.

It's mentioned in my FLHRSE4 owners manual but doesn't tell how to turn it on or off. Actually it says see the Dealer . . .
A buddy told me you roll the throttle forward (off) and hold it until the cruise control light comes turns RED, release the throttle and then roll throttle forward agin and hold until cruise control light turns green.
I have not tried it so take it for what it's worth.

It has been quite some time since I read in my electrical manual for my '08 SERK. I had all my electrical manual WAY before I had my bike and I got the shop and supplement afterwards. So from memory, and this will be close and in theory correct. Once a certain temperature is reached, temp not given or told where it is monitored, the rear cylinder cuts off and the idle drops from 1,100 to 900 rpms. As long as you stay below 7 mph it will stay in the "Parade Mode". Once you reach 7 mph it ignites the rear cylinder and away you go.
There are lots of times here in St. Louis lately that when I'm stuck on the freeway in the great bike parking lot, I turn off the bike but then have to restart it. If I could roll forward the throttle assembly to "put" it into Parade Mode, I think that would be a big help. At least it would make me feel better. Maybe there will be a new firm ware flash that they can retro back to the '08s. I can't believe we don't have the hardware to do this already on the '08s.
I know some of the guys have replaced their horns with the cooling fans and they say that does help keep the temps down while stuck in traffic. Yes, they reposition the horns, I didn't mean they removed them entirely....
Hope this helps.
-
I have this system on my 2008 dyna. Was a little annoying at first but i have richened the mixture up and it hardly does it now.
The manual does tell you how to dis-arm it but i think setting up the bike is a better idea. Those of you with fairings will have a tough time in traffic so i would get the mixture richer right away. Here in the great white north you can change the emissions with out repercussions.
Cheers

It is available on the '08's.
Quote from 2008 FLHRSE4 owners manual:
"ENGINE IDLE TEMPERATURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM For those riders who frequently find themselves in riding conditions where the vehicle is subjected to prolonged idle conditions, an optional dealer enabled engine calibration is available. This calibration offers limited rear cylinder cooling with the vehicle stopped while the engine is left at idle. This option is available for original equipment engine calibrations only. See your dealer for details."

Yes, it is available on the 08's. On the 08's it has to be turned off/on by the dealer. The rider can do it on the 09's.

07HD110, excellent analogy! :bananarock:

:confused5:What a joke !!! They need to just liquid cool the motors rather than design stupid features like this on motors that should not be idleing for any prolonged periods !!! All this EPA compliance along with larger displacement motors (96 and 110) needs liquid cooling. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out :confused5:

I Agree. Put the Revolution engine in the road glide (or any touing model) and I'd buy one. yeah yeah, it may be smaller, only 1250cc's, but it would walk away from the stock 110 that is currently found in the CVO touring lineup...It only makes sense with one of the CVO main selling points is performance that they would actually put the best performance motor they have into a CVO bike... BUT in typical MoCo lightning fast product introduction this won't happen till 2015 or so when they run out of colors to change and parts to chrome... .
I'm excited about the day when this happens... hell, time to make a spot in the garage!
Think about this, a CVO road glide or Ultra (Whatever your fancy) with the radiators built into the lowers on the engine gaurd... the revo engine can be reworked cosmetically (install longer cooling fins on the jugs and engine case) to simulate the look of air cooled VT... they can run the cooland line in what are usually pushrod tubes and will all the space they save they can put a 7 gallon gas tank under the seat to lower the center of gravity... keep the same tank except have all the gauges that are usually on the fairing built flush into the tank, this would allow 4-6x9 speakers in the front fairing with a navigation screen directly in front of you for long distance hauls! Now we are talking about a touring bike....
-
Y'all who want the water cooling on a V-Twin complete with fake cooling fins to make it look like something it isn't - check out the Japanese manufacturers - they got your bike! :2vrolijk_21:

That would be right......sounds kinda like a bike honda already builds....... There is a reason I don't ride a goldwing - JMHO ;)

Why?
U should try a Wing! It's kinda nice not having oil stains on your jeans!

I might consider it, but the "cool factor" is pretty much non-existant with a goldwing and I really need all the help I can get ;D

On a more serious note: I just got out of a very expensive love affair with an air cooled Porsche. I had all kinds of problems, but heat was not one of them. It needed 13 quarts of oil to cool an amazing 3600cc powerplant. And if I could afford to own another Porsche, I would prefer an air cooled model. And you can ask any Porsche enthusiast, get the same answer. I am surprised that HD does not utilize their current and past relationship with Porsche to design a better engine for our bikes like they did for UROD (which is Russian for "hideous" or "very ugly" by the way - not to diss anyone, I love the Nightrod).
-
There is always resistance to change.. and I'm not saying I don't love the air cooled motors, cause I do. Hell, I have three of them... It's just kinda gonna happens so you all might as well warm up to the idea. I mean the touring line already has the VROD's brembo brakes and abs shared...
I'm not saying everyone in this forum complains about the heat, but working in a dealership I know there are a lot of yuppie 'whiners' out there... and so far the MoCo is listening to them by altering the ECM to shut down the rear cylinder and rerouting the exhaust (albeit that was two part to save on production costs required for this due to the frame change necessary to produce the tri glide)... I'm just saying.. the 'aging hardcore' harley riders may just be whining themselves into a liquid cooled motor next.. and sooner than expected for all of us. Think about it before you pop off with a smart a$$ response...

OK......besides TwoLane.............
The enviable will come and just like 2 stroke bikes the air cooled bikes will be eventually impossible to manufacture one of these
days...............but until then I am not buying into it.......just plain stubborn
might as well buy metric........

it's really not that far of a stretch. Still pretty much looks like a 'badass' bike to me for those that are worried about your image more than having a great performing bike to ride...
-
Don't disagree that maybe sometime in the future that there will have to be a watercooled bike in the touring lineup, but I hope they find something that will be on a frame that will fit those of us over six feet. I've ridden a VRod and nothing against them I just don't see myself on one for long periods of time at their present configuration. :nixweiss:

after having made your introductions to the community like this:
That's right... all you bring your... pieces of chrome chit to any road
all you'll be looking at from your... "fast harley" seat touring bike is my license plate
so you can go out and spend ridiculous amounts of money on a 1/2 ton harley.. I'll stay with the the only real performance harley worthy of the screaming eagle name for half your bike's price.
And capped it off with this:
another picture of the only harley worthy of the screaming eagle name...
About this ugly piece of chit that I'm still not sure even has handlebars.

Wow, that sounds great. Is it just me, ride the bike 13 hours to Sturgis, then when you get to traffic roll the throttle forward, shuts the rear cylinder down, yea, motor should be almost cool to the touch. Might work great if you trailer it to the begining of the parade. Not real sure of the advantage. JMO

hey y'all, I'm over 6' too so I wouldn't want the VRod ergos for a touring bike either... I was simply trying to say put the revolution motor in the touring frame with some minor re-engineering to make it fit with the same ergoes and overall outward appearance....
Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone's got one and they all stink.... just so happens when standing down wind from that twolane guy you need a MCU-2P to breath fresh air. adios, I'm outta here... you all have fun collecting your social security checks and aarp flyers in the mail.

Well, I'm glad he's so sure that the V-Rod motor in a dresser would be a good thing. One problem... It won't fit. That's why you always see V-Rods done up as a dresser and not a dresser with a V-Rod motor massaged into it. Since they just re-designed the frame maybe it will now. I haven't seen anything on the measurements, but my guess is it will be a completely new motor when they go water cooled.
And as far as AARP flyers... Growing old is madatory, growing up is optional!!!e,

My bad about "Air/Oil colled". I quess the point I was trying to make is this: If a 3600cc motor needs 13 quarts of oil to stay cool enough, than 1800cc should need half of that to do the job. Which is not entirely impossible IMO. But then again, I work in medical field, maybe I should stick to fixing people, not bikes. ;D

Security checks?! WOW! I know you are still reading the responses to your BS, you ignorant prick, so here is mine: I am 33 years old, have three kids and I have been financially independent since I got married at 18. All that, considering I immigrated into Canada just 16 years ago with $400 bucks in my pocket. I collected 3 welfare checks just to get me off my feet. Now I own three medical supply companies. So thats my story. Now lets here your success story, D@#$H*&D.

you ever have a great comeback, about 10 minutes after you had the confrontation with the person? ???

I read the board almost every day, but don't get to post much some days. Missed this thread yesterday for some reason.
And I LOVE Romper Room foot stomping gonna take my toys & go home threads. :2vrolijk_21:
Just try to imagine my disappointment..... :nixweiss:
Hell, I'm a day behind you even... >:(

I missed it too. But because I got a gutt feeling that he read all of our replies , I felt comfortable writing something. Not to say that when I cooled down, I wished I didn't give him the attention his mother failed to.
(Whach him pop-up and say:What did you say about my mother?!)
Anyway guys, I am off to Sturgis tonight, so I will read the thread when I come back in two weeks. Naked titties, here I come, come, come! :orange: :bananarock: :jalapeno: :cucumber: :pineapple: :pepper:

where is list where you apply to be a chithead or do yu have to earn it

WOW did we get off track? I was excited about this thread because I want to have the load done to my 07 ultra. Dealer says they will pull the load once for free and if I don't like it put it back to they way it was. If I want it again there would be a fee. The load is in the 08 bikes so they jsut have to do some local work this too is free.
So the question for me is....has enyone any experience with this yet? Have you tried it? do you like it? I am going to the 105th so I think that will be a good place in traffic to test it out. Input would be great.
Ride safe

Not sure if there is a list where you can apply. The Head Chithead knows that stuff, most of the rest of us know little about his mystical ways, and even if we did, we are sworn to secrecy or mebbe we were sworn to something else. I forget stuff like that - too busy thinking about bikes, beers, & boobs usually.
Best way to be a chithead here is to post & pretty soon everybody will figure out what a chithead you are.

Howdy Neighbor,
I am less than 10 miles from you in Royersford.
Back on track though.....I was entertaining having that switched on myself, but never had talked to anyone that was using it that way, so I never tried it myself. I really do not think this is a big deal and they will switch it back once if you do not like. Like yourself though I do not know anyone that has it turned on,so I cooled my down with a tune, pipes and side shields
by the way I think it is requirement to buy these bikes, that you have an ADD component to your personality or why would you have bought them. read through the threads and ADD just screams out

I am an expert at both feet in the mouth at the same time so that should qualify for something and I think your also not allowed to apologise but will have to figure out that one later on. I laughed my A$$ off with some of the posts this is great entertainment as I am sitting over here in Algeria looking at all this sand and trying to figure out if I can get my new 09 in as excess baggage with sand tires on it. Will miss Sturgis as don't get home till the 16th. I haven't been there since 82 so I imagine it has changed a bit. So now my question would be does this forum have anything to do with Harley's (just curious).

Why?
U should try a Wing! It's kinda nice not having oil stains on your jeans!
:2vrolijk_21:
I personally love the look of the Twin Cam engine. If I built an engine that looked like a Honda Motor I would also hide it under plastic shrouding. The shrouding keeps the oil off your jeans, they do leak.

I remember when I got my 84 FXRS it was the first evo at the dealership (I was the mechanic back then). Everyone thought I was a traitor since it wasn't a shovel, at the time the nose cone shovel was just starting to get on the list. So I'm wondering has the twinkie motor been accepted yet as a real harley or are those guys still riding their knuckle heads. Water cooling, whats that? when you spill your beer on the fins.

It's a complicated procedure stained by those who treked there before you.

Ok a real nickname is one that someone else gives you and it sticks then you try to not answer when someone calls you by it, so your sure you want to go there.

Nice bike but something is in the way so you can't see it properly I guess thats called artistic expression

CB, you've walked in to a relatively well entrenched community of folks that to a surprising extent actually do know each other. There's no way in hell the world is going to adjust to you hear. Your best bet is to read awhile. Gain a feel for the rhythms of the place. Then join in in a friendly fashion.
That's advice for what it's worth. Come in feeling your oats and firing off like 81mm and you'll find there's 155 in the woods. And no one wants that.
So, welcome aboard. Learn the group a bit. Feel free to chime in in a friendly fashion and the established community will welcome you. If you're consideing showing your ass for its own sake, however, you can leave that behind you (pardon the pun) now.
-

Thanks for the feedback showing my ass isn't the main objective "don't have one" if it happens unfortunatly I don't even have a 22 to fire back so call me defenseless. I have been reading this for a while and quite enjoy the banter, if I do happen to step on anyones toes it's because I'm clumsy but if I do I also realize there is a price to be paid. Appology's up front for any offenses created by butting in.

No problem CB. Sometimes there's a fine line between butting in and having fun and just showing one's ass. I've no doubt crossed it more than once. Have fun. Enjoy the place. Enjoy the banter. You'll be playing well with others in no time.

Lord no. Be a waste of time. If something is actually worth killing it's worth the effort to do it right. Anything short of that can be simply dismissed or avoided. But it's always worth a friendly hello to try to keep from getting there.

I'm just a big, cuddly 6'6", 250lb, gun nut, martial arts instructor Marine...nothing to worry about from me. I'm also an IT geek...

Now back to the cry of the instant recognition of a nickname, I seem to feel the love of all you guys about this (fingers poised above the keys having trouble holding back) and I'm sure if you could make a list but didn't put your name to it we could all have a laugh although the danger is someone might get offended. I will opt out on this as I have no idea other than Gold member and marine hmm there could be some good ones with that combination.

They do. Especially the ones with the gold stripe in them (or the triple red ones parked next to the red ones with the gold stripe in them!).

2LBR, so my Christmas present for you this year would go unused. Will look for something else.

That confuses the hell out of my dog sometimes Sean. The housecat here is declawed in the front. The dog occasionally forgets that a rear assault is still not smart.

I'm more confused. Red is the fastest color. Now red also rules, but I thought gold bikes ruled?

They do. Especially the ones with the gold stripe in them (or the triple red ones parked next to the red ones with the gold stripe in them!).

Hey Sean, now I'm confused. If black is all the colors not reflecting anything and white is none of the colors reflecting everything than:
1) Wouldn't black need a bigger bottle?
2) Wouldn't white need no bottle at all?

reactive paint??. I saw a show, a shirt this guy invented had tons of cameras and small screens and it projected what it saw back against itself?
Anyway, kinda made him disappear - not like invisible man stuff, but it was kinda neat.

My bad about "Air/Oil colled". I quess the point I was trying to make is this: If a 3600cc motor needs 13 quarts of oil to stay cool enough, than 1800cc should need half of that to do the job. Which is not entirely impossible IMO. But then again, I work in medical field, maybe I should stick to fixing people, not bikes. ;D
And a good point it is too, Babkis. I do wonder, though, what effect the lowered exhaust on the new touring frames will have on increasing oil temps (esp. in the tranny) while attempting to lower the air temps the rider 'feels'. Kind of like 'trapping' the hot air around the rear cylinder head with the frame air deflectors for the riders thighs. ??? spyder :-\

I'm the sure the MOCO will offer a heat shield for the tranny for a small nominal fee.
