08 CVO Springer Beach Style Bar Options
« on: May 11, 2018, 09:33:44 AM »

Greetings. I've had a few HD's but new to the springer world. I'm moving from a real nice 2016 Deluxe with 34.5" wide Burly Bikini beach bars. I love the wider bar style and comfort.

What are my options for my "new" 08 CV Springer? There appears to be potential riser issues with the tacho. I'm guessing the stock risers are 4" so maybe a 3" would work fine?

Pretty hard to find CVO springer pics with beach style bars!

Just purchased this 2008 with just 949km's on the clock. Been kept inside in air conditioned comfort to admire as sculpture. Locally sold by my local dealer 10 years ago. It's unmarked and beautiful!

Nothing here on handlebar suggestion but as I'm sure the dealer has changed all the fluids (including brake and clutch), I'd also replace the tires if they are original equipment.  At 10 years old, that rubber is toast no matter where it's been stored... :2vrolijk_21:

Good luck on all the mods including whatever handlebars you choose and welcome to the CVO world.

From the Albany Harley dealer I presume ?

Saw it on Gumtree and enquired for a mate. Eventually he bought a "local" 2007 CVO Springer in Wanneroo.

Changing the bars is going to be an exxy exercise unless you are full bottle yourself with internal handlebar rewiring with extensions etc etc.

And as you have mentioned the OEM revcounter is well nigh model unique , as are the risers.

Also the 2008 Springer CVO risers and bars are not compatible with other Softail parts. I know , I have tried and put it in the too hard basket !

Yep from the Albany HD dealer. Noticed it the day after it was consigned. Left it for a few months. Popped in for my usual occasional dealer cruise and ended up   an offer. Must have been love LoL.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm looking at the WO510 CHUBBY® SPRINGER DRESSER BAR
1-1/4"   4-1/2"H   34-1/2"W   12-1/2"PB      40°WA

On the stock OEM risers can they be fitted without the bottom ring? This would effectively lower the handlebar about 1.5".

Saw that one in Wannaroo, bargain by the look of it!

We need to have a springer ride, get all of them together.

Yes Victor the 2007 in Wanneroo was a real bargain , and also a sign of the times.

Winter waiting to bite ( as much as it can in WA LOL !), and a market flooded with used Harleys, the PERFECT STORM.

The bike was (like mine) an "import" brought used from the US.

There are way more CVO Springers 07/08/09 in Australia now than were ever sold as "5HD" bikes back when they were new.

Hi,

Good to see you have joined the Springer club..

I have the same 2008 Springer as yours, 3" risers will only work if you remove the tachometer. You can see the riser extensions under the risers, they are there to allow the tacho to be fitted. You can remove the 1" extensions, but the headlight will touch the tacho..
The 2009 model does not have the riser extensions fitted, this is the reason a tachometer was not installed at the factory on the 2009 model.

The HD CVO Springer is a great bike, I have owned all three CVO Springers (2007,2008 and 2009). I sold the 2009 and still have the 2007 and 2008 models. I actually fitted a tachometer on the 2009 model that I owned, and I had to fit the riser extensions to make it work.

The 2008 model in particular is a great bike. There are only a few genuine Ozzie CVO Springers in this Country as "gmeikle" has suggested. I would say around 20-30 of each Model.

Enjoy you new ride!, If you need to know anything about your bike at all, give me a yell..

I am just about to do quite a few performance upgrades to mine, actually taking them out to 113ci (1,850cc).

I have attached a photo of my bike for you.

Regards

Geoff

Hi, what are u planning to get done / are you doing it yourself or planning to get a shop to do it (if a shop who?).

I have the 2009 model and have been thinking about doing some type of upgrade (cam etc) but nothing that I have seen / read about so far has really caught my attention as really worthwhile to do.

Wow thank you. This info is gold. So you're saying that there are only 20-30 FXSTSSE2 in Oz!?? Even less being Inferno Orange? When I'm next in Perth would love to catch up n chat springer options. I note some details on yours when I opened the BIG pic (Ta). Headlight rim. I had this eyelid style on my Deluxe and was thinking about it on the CVO. Good to seen what it actually looks like. Put your bike on a trailer and come down to Albany in spring. It's an awesome place to ride! Steve

Hi Imoo,

This is the recipe I will be using for these bikes. I have all of the parts, the work will be done in July.

Having the cylinders bored out to 4.060 (113ci)
- KB 113ci pistons
- heads by HDSP (USA- head porter)- heads ported, 2.120 intake valve fitted, new beehive springs
   fitted.
- HPI 58mm TB
- 4.9 SE injectors
- 0.030 Head gasket
- SE adjustable pushrods
- S & S premium lifters
- S & S Cam plate and oil pump
- CR575 cams (torque cam)
- new inner cam bearings
- SE compensator
- Hayden primary chain tensioner
- Aim VP 82 clutch
- and last of all, looking at having an S&S crankshaft installed at the same time

This work will be conducted in either Brisbane or Sydney.

The most important part of the build is having the bike dyno tuned by a competent tuner, and run in at the same time on the dyno, this is where the real magic starts in this performance build.

If you want a cheap build, install some S and S premium lifters and new inner cam bearings and get a dyno tune, leave your SE255 cams in there. You will find the SE255 cams tuned properly is really all that you need to do. My suggestion is to get it dyno-tuned by a competent tuner who knows what he is doing.

Ta. My HD dealer has told me a few time that he sold it new to the guy I bought it off for close to 60K. The exchange rate was crazy.

"1800 Pro-upgrade kit" 259E cams , 10.5:1 high comp pistons , Supertuner pro Orange tuning dongle

I had that in my 2013 CVO Breakout ( sold 6 months ago !). That had been installed from new in Bunbury and I bought that bike at 7 months old

That bike was "faster" than my Springer once moving , say from 80 to 110+ Km/H

Springer would SPANK the Breakout off the lights and all the way to 70 or 80 Km/H. EASILY !

Which is most important to you in the real world you have to ask yourself ? Personally I prefer the low down grunt of the stock CVO 255 cams.

I do my own laptop tuning , older "original black SERT on my Springer , CVO Breakout had Supertuner Pro of course.

Geoff,  You allready have the SE Compensator in your FXSTSSE3, so dont waste your $ on another.

If you really think you will be making that much horse power to warrant a crank change, at least think of using the Dark Horse unit, best on the market, for sure.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info.

My understanding is the 2007 and 2008 Springers have the standard compensators, not the SE version.

Is the dark horse unit a welded and balanced factory HD crankshaft?

Hey Geoff,

The heads were done by Don Dorfman (ex Deweys Heads) , pretty sure you will find him on this forum, i believe he is now at http://www.hdstreetperformance.com/
Certainly knows his stuff, and really helped me out in getting the result i was after.

The install was done by a local ex Harley tech nearby at Gateshead, "Threedom Wheels". Hilton is the man.

Tune was done by Sports Cycles at Gateshead.

I have tried the Andrews 54H in my FXSTSSE2, it was a ripper, no head work, just a tune. Very impressive.

Though looking for an upgrade on my return from the USA this year, Adding a HPI-55D6-76 Throttle Body and Tman TR590 cam.

Hi Dave,

I had my heads done by Don as well. He's a champion!
That HPI 55 TB and TR590 cam will work well in your bike.
I expect my build will produce 120HP and 125lbs of Torque.
