New Engine !! 2007 FXSTSSE 600 MILES and NO leaks!!!!!!
« on: April 02, 2009, 09:28:20 PM »

Had the 15,000 check up, rode 100 miles, looked over the whole engine/frame/etc, oil coming out the rear cylinder
base left side.

Took back to dealer and they are talking with the Factory, they said check cylinder liners and if good, check engine cases.

Will update this as I find new info.

rbaker    :nervous:

April 10th 2009.................................
New engine being shipped from Factory!!! Will update as I get more news. :orange:

Mine was in 4 times for weeping oil...
3rd time in: the rear cylinder was swapped to the front to "try" and troubleshoot the rear cylinder base weeping oil, the problem did move to the front, so a new cylinder was ordered.
4th time in: front clyinder was replaced with a brand new cylinder, still weeping oil from the front cylinder base............

new motor was ordered, and is waiting at the dealership for me to bring the bike in..... :2vrolijk_21:

I have been following your posts and even told the dealer to look up your posts, in case they did not believe me.
So far to date, they have done 4 gasket installs, (not the "Revision C" just the first release.) New ECM, another set of "ACR's"
(To fix the hard starting after the 1st ACR replacement)

It is getting old, as you know!!

Good luck on your engine replacement.

They were talking about possibly changing engine cases on mine....
I said NO WAY!

That's equal to just replacing the enging block in your car if the motor had a leak they just couldn't fix...
there's no way I'm accepting that......... period. :furious2:

I need to find out if this new motor will have any kind of warranty on it...since the old one didn't start leaking until it had 5000 miles on it..

The service advisor I work with at the dealers was off yesterday when I dropped off the Springer. I am expecting  a call from him today
and will inform him that I will not accept a "band-aid" case replacement.

Thanks for the info. :nervous:

I found out that the only warranty I have is the factory warranty....
mine is up on July 11th, I will need an extended warranty if I want a longer warranty coverage.

I may just say F' it and see how the new motor holds up, "if" i see leakage again, I'll probably just deal with it and trade the bike in on something else later.... then it's someone elses headache... :nixweiss:

but in the meantime, I'll be riding the crap out of it............ :2vrolijk_21:

Picked up the repaired 2007 FXSTSSE from the dealer. The fix was (are you ready for this) when they installed the 1st
recall parts, they put the center crank bolt incorrectly. Today they removed and replaced the bolt and put it on the dyno
and ran it for 123 miles for a leak test.  Looked like it was fixed to them, I rode home ( 66 miles ) and checked...it might
be fixed.... I will ride it 300 miles tomorrow and that will be my test, and will report back here. :confused5:

That's exactly what mine looks like, only it's now coming from the newly replaced front cylinder...
it "was" on the rear cylinder until they swapped the rear to the front, then replaced the front cylinder.....

I'm hoping the new motor will fix that. :huepfenlol2:

if not, it will be traded in on something else in a year or two.....(need to see what the 2010 and 2011's look like) :2vrolijk_21:

what makes them think that the center bolt would fix the problem???
"if" it was leaking from near the front of the rear cylinder then maybe....and that a long shot at best..

so what's your next move????

Going into the dealers first AM and talk with the head of service and the general manager. They are very good people
and just have to do what the factory says to try for the leaks.

I have bought 4 new Harley's from them and they always listen to me and take care of the issues. (in the past)

Dealer picking up tomorrow AM will take the motor apart and send pictures to the factory?   I mentioned your leaking/weeping and
what your dealer and the factory are doing to correct this. Will post more as I get the info.

I called HD and told them my story.
the dealer had suggested maybe changing cases next, I let them know that I was not happy with them "changing cases" and I told HD the same thing.
I told them that I wanted a new motor.
the dealer never took my motor apart to take pictures, they will not be able to tell anything from pictures!  lol

I guess the factory did not need pictures, the factory is shipping a new 110B engine today to the dealer.
Asked if it had the 2009 enhancements and the service advisor said "YES".
Will post more after I get it.

I now know how you felt when you got your phone call!

Yes, I am very happy, The original engine was in the shop weekly, six different times for oil weeping/leaking.

Blown head gaskets even before the recall was announced on the old engine.

I will update this as I put the miles on.

Picked up the 2007 FXSTSSE today with the BRAND NEW 2009 ENGINE!!!!!

Rode it 400 miles today breaking it in. It seems to be more powerful than my old original engine, but I have to be real carefull

for another 100 miles, then will take it back to the dealers to get the break-in oil out of there.

It sure is nice after a ride not to have oil all over the place.

good news! nice shine, think I like the silver powder coat over the darker granite (not as noticable if it peels off ).

Had to do some work on the cage yesterday but took the long way to the parts house on the bike, nice day, lots of bikes, ride too short but got the cage fixed. Hope this fixes it!
 :coolblue: :coolblue: :coolblue:
I have the darker granite on my other Screamin Eagle (2008 Dyna) and it seems to be holding up. I like them both as being just
a little different when viewed side by side. I better get a picture of them both and post????

I will .............  after the breakin miles today.

I have a 2007 springer cvo, red. Love it but it leaked 6 times after HD doing gaskets, etc at 5k miles. They finally gave me a new 09 motor (used my original chrome though), but after 500 miles, it's fine. Problem is I have V&H big radius pipes, it it back fired like crazy. They won't dyno it since it was not done at dealer....don't look a gift horse.........

Taking mine into the dealers tomorrow to change the breakin oil and then home to pack for the California CVO GTG in

Solvang next week. Noticed mine runs a little hotter than the old engine. Have 600 miles on it now and the California trip

should show any problems as I run 85 to 90 MPH in the desert.

Good Luck with yours also. :pineapple:

OK!!! This is how they should all work!

New engine is strong and not a oil weep/leak anywhere.

Picture is VANAMAL's yellow beautiful ride and my Springer in Solvang California

The day before the GTG.

Put 2,500 miles on the new engine. Rode to California, met with the Solvang group, then came home Sunday.

Runs real strong and not using or weeping oil. Looks like a keeper!

Oh, for hells sake just ride the damn thing, there aren't any gaskets between the jugs and the cases anyway, I don't know where youn got this idea from. Porouse metal leaks oil no what you do or what salesman tells you if you ride the machine at all it will look like it leaks so live with it or don't ride it. My 2007 has 585 roller cams in it 10.50 pistons v&h propipe and I ride the hell out of it. Run it thru the car wask and the oil film goes away until you ride it for a while again. S ride or park it!

Mine leaked at the head gaskets, rocker boxes and the o-ring at the jug/cylinders numerous times finally milled bases of jugs, the powder coat was peeling on the cases and tranny too. HD said they'd give me a new drive train, then decided to give me full purchase price trade on my 08 (16000miles)towards an 09 about 2 weeks ago. Have 1000 miles on the new bike and am loving it, signicant difference in handling, hoping all the other issues do not re-occur.

Richard does ride alot and glad to hear you do also. Lots of people here are just reporting after having issues how things are going so far. Most of us enjoy hearing these owners who have had issues are now happy after the fixes that have been done. Glad to hear you are happy with yours. And there is an Oring between the jugs and the cases instead of a traditional flat gasket.

sorry bro...
but a modern engine should NOT leak oil... I don't care what kind of metal they make it out of.
I also have an all aluminum motor in my '98 corvette, should that leak oil too????  (Because it doesn't)

and there IS an O-ring gasket between the cylinder base and the cases. :2vrolijk_21:

sounds like your '07 is weeping oil just like the rest of them, and you've just accepted it....

You guys are terrifying me. I have a 07 springer with 5000 ks and have not done the enhancement at this stage. The centre bolt has the oil weep so far but nothing else.
I'm still trying to work out what light mods are good for this 110 engine without making it a basket case. I live near Melbourne Australia and unfortunately local knowledge
has been a debate between dealerships. My warranty runs out in Sept so the recall will be done prior. This is my first Harley and I love the bike, fingers crossed this one
doesn't become a time bomb.

If you read all this, they did  the recall 6 different times before the Factory replaced my 2007 engine with a 2009 engine. Make sure they use the latest revision gaskets for the heads, I think it is REV B now.  Also make sure they install the crank bolt correctly. (2 times incorrect on my 2007). Good Luck.... mine is now running perfect!

Thanks Richard,
When you were doing the enhancements (RECALL) did you play with the cams. Would you be able to recommend anything which would work well with the standard compression.
The 3 dealerships that I've spoken with all have their own ideas. I would have to find the paperwork but the one I like so far is a cam change and flow the heads, same pistons,
tuner, high flow filter and slipons. My rig at this stage has the  SE tuner and filter but sadly the dealer ordered the wrong slipons (rush slash downs is what I wanted). Sorry for all of the questions.

Regards,
Brad.

I had so much trouble with the stock engine that all I wanted was a normal running Harley. So I did not think of any modifications at the time.
With the new 2009 engine it runs great with just the V/H pipes. I don't ride around town, just long trips of 400 to 1000 miles a day. I wanted to
keep it close to stock for dependability. Had a 1993 Dyna Lowrider (EVO)that I modified and just prefer stock now.

I ve got about 3200 miles on my 07, noticed oil weeping from both cylinders today.  I took it into Tampa Harley spoke to the same service adviser who has worked on my 3 other bikes, made him aware of these posts.  He said he had never heard of this problem.  I bought this bike used so my extended warranty is not from Harley, however it was sold to me by Harley.  He said that he wasn't sure if they would fix this, but he thinks he could sell it to them!!!!! Anybody else have similar issues when addressing this problem?  Any suggestions on how to ensure that this problem is resloved the first time?  I ve read some the horror stories above, would like them to get it right the first time!!!

Find another Dealer......Everybody knows the problem.....You need to make sure the air fuel mixture is right. If not....thats what causes the problems.......The Engine gets to Hot.

They should be able to enter your VIN in the system and determine what recalls have/have not been done.

I have 7,000 miles now without a single problem. I did change all three fluids to REDLINE, shifts better, runs cooler.

Engine, trans, and primary.

I now have 10500 on my 2007 fxstsse, with the new late 2008 replacement motor. Dry as a bone! It makes a ticking sound at 2200 RPM's but am told it's normal. Also seems to run hot when idling 2-4 mins at 80 degrees.

Either way, I still love this bike after 4 yrs.  :bananarock:
