brand new 2008..what price to pay?
« on: May 21, 2010, 07:47:16 AM »

I found a brand new 2008 CVO Softail Springer 105th Anniversary Edition at a dealer.  He is only willing to discount 5% off of the $25,490 MSRP.

I was thinking a 20% discount is more in line for a 2008 (never titled, 2 year warranty) when the 2011 models will be out in late summer.

Any thoughts?

Unless you're in love with the 08 color, 5% is way far from a good deal.  Even if it's a brand new bike, it has already lost value on the market (2008 vs 2011). IMO, 25% discount is what I'd ask for.

Show them the money and you'll see... 8)

Since the bike is two years old, soon to be three years, I'd consider only 5% off MSRP to be an insult.  Kelly Blue Book lists the retail value of a used 2008 Anniversary model at $21,070, btw.  You might want to check some of the other used motorcycle price guides, like the NADA books, to get a good idea of what it's really worth.  That it really isn't used doesn't change the fact that as soon as you sign the paperwork it will only be worth what you could sell it for as a used bike.  I'd be more inclined to offer about $20k and negotiate from there.  Face it, if this dealer hasn't been able to sell it in the past two years, they either just like how it looks on the showroom floor, or they haven't figured out how much money they are losing just letting it set there collecting dust.

Can't speak for H-D, but in the automotive world the factory normally gives the dealer a nice little rebate on carryover models.  I'll bet that dealer's true cost on that bike is below $20k.

These are some of my thoughts as well.  He should have started at 20% off MSRP.  I am about 1,200 miles away and it will have to be shipped as well.

I have been talking to the store owner's son who is over the sales, the 5% was his first offer on my first time to call the store.

I already have the money and have been looking for this bike for awhile, just don't want to be taken to the cleaners!

Dealer is going to have to eat a little of his invoice cost regardless of who he sells it to.  The question is whether or not they're ready to take the hit. Without knowing the dealer, it's hard to guess if he owns his inventory or has been paying floor plan interest for the past couple of years and is set up to take a yearly inventory write-down, which, in reality allows him  to adjust his actual cost in the unit.  HD does not rebate carryovers.

In your case, I assume that you're paying cash and do not have a trade in that the dealer could possibly make up some slack with.  With that in mind, I'd try a 21k one time offer ..... delivered, if you're really sold on this bike and model year. If it's not a "must have" deal there are plenty of used '08's out there to deal on.

The dealer should realize the value of the bike is its used value as it leaves the lot.  The two year warranty is no big deal.

Cash is king in these days.  Offer $20k delivered and see what he says.

I agree with all that is said here, offer 20k and go from there.  5% off is a joke and he knows it.

I have taken your advice and offered them MSRP less 20%.  That makes the price around $20,300....sent the offer via email in the a.m. today and still no response either way....may be a standoff!!!

I hear you on the 25%....the 20% was already a shock to them.  I had a phone message back from them tonight, but they haven't talked to anyone higher up yet....go figure...waiting game now.

Here is what they sold for at dealer only auction in the last 90 days seller was Harley Finance.
4 of them sold in the range shown. This does not include auction fees or shipping costs.

Anything with a score of 80 or higher is like you would find on the showroom floor.
Hope this helps

Still no response either way.....

I had a phone message Friday night from the dealer saying he didn't know if they could go that low ($20,300) and he would have to ask the other sales guys if anyone else has had made any offers on the bike.  He has my legitimate offer and hasn't even bothered to counter it!

Should I just wait them out?  Do you think they will counter offer?
