brand new 2008..what price to pay?
« on: May 21, 2010, 07:47:16 AM »

I found a brand new 2008 CVO Softail Springer 105th Anniversary Edition at a dealer.  He is only willing to discount 5% off of the $25,490 MSRP.

I was thinking a 20% discount is more in line for a 2008 (never titled, 2 year warranty) when the 2011 models will be out in late summer.

Any thoughts?

Unless you're in love with the 08 color, 5% is way far from a good deal.  Even if it's a brand new bike, it has already lost value on the market (2008 vs 2011). IMO, 25% discount is what I'd ask for.

Show them the money and you'll see... 8)

Since the bike is two years old, soon to be three years, I'd consider only 5% off MSRP to be an insult.  Kelly Blue Book lists the retail value of a used 2008 Anniversary model at $21,070, btw.  You might want to check some of the other used motorcycle price guides, like the NADA books, to get a good idea of what it's really worth.  That it really isn't used doesn't change the fact that as soon as you sign the paperwork it will only be worth what you could sell it for as a used bike.  I'd be more inclined to offer about $20k and negotiate from there.  Face it, if this dealer hasn't been able to sell it in the past two years, they either just like how it looks on the showroom floor, or they haven't figured out how much money they are losing just letting it set there collecting dust.

Can't speak for H-D, but in the automotive world the factory normally gives the dealer a nice little rebate on carryover models.  I'll bet that dealer's true cost on that bike is below $20k.

These are some of my thoughts as well.  He should have started at 20% off MSRP.  I am about 1,200 miles away and it will have to be shipped as well.

I have been talking to the store owner's son who is over the sales, the 5% was his first offer on my first time to call the store.

I already have the money and have been looking for this bike for awhile, just don't want to be taken to the cleaners!

Dealer is going to have to eat a little of his invoice cost regardless of who he sells it to.  The question is whether or not they're ready to take the hit. Without knowing the dealer, it's hard to guess if he owns his inventory or has been paying floor plan interest for the past couple of years and is set up to take a yearly inventory write-down, which, in reality allows him  to adjust his actual cost in the unit.  HD does not rebate carryovers.

In your case, I assume that you're paying cash and do not have a trade in that the dealer could possibly make up some slack with.  With that in mind, I'd try a 21k one time offer ..... delivered, if you're really sold on this bike and model year. If it's not a "must have" deal there are plenty of used '08's out there to deal on.

The dealer should realize the value of the bike is its used value as it leaves the lot.  The two year warranty is no big deal.

Cash is king in these days.  Offer $20k delivered and see what he says.

I agree with all that is said here, offer 20k and go from there.  5% off is a joke and he knows it.

I have taken your advice and offered them MSRP less 20%.  That makes the price around $20,300....sent the offer via email in the a.m. today and still no response either way....may be a standoff!!!

I hear you on the 25%....the 20% was already a shock to them.  I had a phone message back from them tonight, but they haven't talked to anyone higher up yet....go figure...waiting game now.

Here is what they sold for at dealer only auction in the last 90 days seller was Harley Finance.
4 of them sold in the range shown. This does not include auction fees or shipping costs.

Anything with a score of 80 or higher is like you would find on the showroom floor.
Hope this helps

Still no response either way.....

I had a phone message Friday night from the dealer saying he didn't know if they could go that low ($20,300) and he would have to ask the other sales guys if anyone else has had made any offers on the bike.  He has my legitimate offer and hasn't even bothered to counter it!

Should I just wait them out?  Do you think they will counter offer?

In the email I sent with my offer, I took some of the comments you guys posted and told him...."For whatever reason the bike has not sold in the past two years and the 2011 models will be coming out soon.  Maybe because it looks great on the showroom floor, or no one has figured out how much money they are losing by letting it collect dust."

I just can't believe with this current economy, that H-D dealers are so bull-headed and blind.  I am a willing buyer, but I guess they are not a willing seller for whatever reason...

Move on to the next deal believe it or not there are many more out there. If you contat a CVO rep or district sales person they can give you a list of them in dealer inventory?

It is amazing how unaffected by the economy the dealers seem to be? Remember though most of them do not have an accounting degree! They also seem to be living in the past.

Each dealer is independently owned I doubt there is/would be a "District Sales Person". Each dealer has a factory rep that is a liaison between the dealership and the factory but they mostly deal with warranty issues the sale (prices) of motorcycles are up to the dealer.

You wont find it on the web site for sure. I met the reps at the CVO display in Sturgis SD last year and they had a laptop with the national inventory with them. The guy I spoke with there was named Bruce but unfortunately I cannot remember a last name.

He lead me to believe CVO also has their own Rep for each region or that was what I thought he said. Anyway you can usually find a rep at one of the larger shows at the CVO display. You might also try calling customer service and asking to be directed to a CVO rep.

In Daytona I talked to a Field Rep about my SESG seat issues his name is Randy Klopfer perhaps he could assist you as well. Customer Service is 414-343-4056

The bike the dealer has fits ALL of my requirements except price!

On my first phone call, they came off about 4% from MSRP as an out-the-door price.  They are about 1,200 miles away and that included shipping to a local dealer.

I countered with 20% off MSRP as an out-the-door price.  I feel sure he will be in touch with me tomorrow and I am hoping since the end of the month is less than a week away, that we can come to some common ground.

Maybe we settle on 10-15% off of MSRP.....

Remember that the fixes that the factory needs to do to that bike have to be done by July 27th to get them done free under warranty.

I just bought the same bike for $19K with 6700 miles on it. It also had two seats, two sets of pipes, two sets of hadlebars, two sets of forward controls including an extended set that were big bucks; It has the SERT and an extended warranty with three years left.

This may be the first warning sign that you may be about to pay too much?  You are already negotiating against yourself? Your the best salesperson if you convince yourself it's "The One" They made thousands hang in there you can get the deal you want with a little patience and effort. Especially since it isn't local  :nixweiss:

Perhaps ask a local dealer who doesn't have it to print you out a list of the dealers who do?

In the end its already a 3 year old machine and the minute you buy its used end of story!

It's your money but I think you need to take the group's advice and don't give them that much. Perhaps tell them if you have 'cash'  and you have found another bike that you like also, closer to home, and tell them $20,000 or I will buy the other model, there choice, Its like poker, buffing does work.... ::)

Even though I would love to have this bike, I am not planning to pay much more than $20k.  I have the cash in hand and if I can't get this one, then another one will come along at a better deal.  For whatever reason the dealer still has this bike and I have been dealing with the Owner's son from the start.  He knows that I have the money and knows I am a legitimate buyer....

Maybe I'm the lone opinion here, but I think 4% under msrp out-the-door is a good price!  Sales tax, registration, destination fees add up to several thousand dollars OVER msrp in my state, and you'd be paying none of this. If you like the bike get it. Yes, it's a three year old bike...and yes, they don't make 'em any more. I say buy it if you like it.

While I won't be paying the taxes and fees up front, I will be having to pay them when I title and register the bike in my home state...

have you asked your local dealer to try to get the bike for you? They could possibly trade something for it on a dealer cost basis and still be able to make you a good deal. Might be worth a shot.

Be aware the sales tax laws have changed recently and you will likely have to pay sales tax in the selling state as I did on mine. You will get credit in your home state but if you tax rate is lower than the state you purchase in no refund will be given.

I contacted the sales guy (store owner's son) and the finance guy and told them where I was on price earlier this week after the holiday weekend.  Neither one has bothered to return phone calls or emails and make a counter offer.  I guess they like collecting bikes and having a museum....

Do most Harley dealers have this arrogant attitude?  I have found this similar attitude at the DFW Harley dealers.  In this economy, you would think they would be more wanting to sell their product.

Many but not All, several of my friends purchased from Harley Davidson of Napoleon Oh at discounts. Brandt's in Wabash In., Will also will make deals some below MSRP and others in store credits of 1,000 to 1,500. I've been told they are one of the top dealers by sales volume?

It is a lot like dealing with Mercedes dealers about 10 years ago when it was list price or nothing.
