My first CVO
« on: September 15, 2014, 07:42:38 PM »

Hey Everyone,

My name is Wayne and my wife and I live in Green Cove Springs FL.  I just picked up my new Jupiter Blue 2014 CVO limited.  Only other bike I ever owned was a Dyna Wide Glide 10 years ago.  The wife never really enjoyed riding with me because of the small seat.  That for sure isn't a problem any more.  I had actually agreed on a Daytona Blue Limited and then changed to the CVO after the first three mods I wanted to make totaled $2K.  Now with the CVO I have everything on it that I want for the foreseeable future.  Anyway I am looking forward to reading and learning as much as I can from everyone here.

Take Care
Wayne D.

Absolutely...  My better half is from TX and we lived there in San Antonio for 15 years (which is where I had my wide glide).  She is a bigger Gator fan than me now.

awesome!  Glad to see a fellow Gator with a twin bike.  Let me know if you do any of the SE rallys.  We do thunder beach fall and spring and try to make some of the others depending on work/kids. We can let the twins meet and I can buy you a drink.

So I just looked up thunder beach and it is coming up soon.  Where do you stay?  I would probably take the toy hauler and stay at the State Park near I-10.  Looks like a great event.  If you ever get near Jax or Daytona let me know and I will buy you one first.  LOL ;)

staying at Twin Palms on the beach this year. Gonna try and do Daytona in the spring.  I've got a toy hauler myself. I'm towing a 42' xlr thunderbolt when I have too much stuff to take on the bike or have to bring the kids. What r u pullin?

That don't sound right lol.

All BS aside, I would like a 5th wheel toy hauler. Something minimal that would suite just the wife and I and could be pulled by a 1/2 Chevy.

Yep you're right... Didn't take me long to sound goofy.

I think I have the smallest 5er toy hauler and it is 35' and weighs about 11K with 2.5K hitch weight.  Would be pretty tough on a 1/2 ton PU..

Maybe with some bags added you may be okay...

Well darn, guess I better rethink that. Probably have to go 3/4 ton.

We really do love the TH though.  It has the two drop down beds in the garage for the kids and just enough room in the LQ.  I have one leaving for the navy in Jan. and one left (Jr in HS), so in two years it will be way more than enough for the two of us...

That's insanely close to my situation. I have 1 moved out and in college and 2 (twin boys) jr's in high school! This is why we are exploring these purchases. Don't need anything huge for 2 ppl. The wife and I would just like to be able to save on lodging and enjoy the outdoors on our motorcycle excursions.

What do you pull that with?

What do you pull that with?

08 f350 SWR 4x4..  Got it used with 38K on it.  Not even broke in.  I made sure the 5er fit in the weight specs of the truck set up stock.  It pulls it with np but I may still get a set of bags.  Only diff between 250 and 350 is one spring.
We also stayed that size for price.  OTD got the 3005 for $43K..  Next size up was in the mid 50's...

The TH is kinda going to pay for itself depending on how much we travel.  i.e. when looking at thunder beach I found state park sites for $18 per night.  Staying outside of town keeps us from spending so much on eating dinner out etc.  Just a different perspective...

Oh I agree that's why we are looking at our options. I just don't need any thing over the top. Looking for a practical setup to house the 2 of us. We have time I want to pay off the bike first.

If you havent had one before, get yourself a used little Travel Trailer that has the bathroom/kitchen/bedroom and toyhauler.  You can tow them with any 1/2 ton pickup (as long as you dont go too big) and they can be had for a great low price.  Also, when you want to get rid of it, you will get about what you want out of it.

This will then let you figure out what you like/don't like/really want out of your long-term rig.

We did that, did some camping, some Rallys and ended up with our must-have list and our want list...made it easier to show when we were ready to make the purchase.

Just glad to finally be riding again.  I had seven horses before when I had the WG and did a lot of rodeoing in TX.  I had to give up the bike to keep the horses.  Back is two old for riding the horses anymore.

Yup, the work and plays are pretty cool and I see them behind 1/2 tons all the time.

Start off on rvtrader.com.  Based on your price range, take a look at what is being offered in a price range you have in mind..  You can head to a local RV store to see what things look like (dont buy from them, just look).  That will give you an idea of size/stuff you want in it.

Great thing about the older ones..you can always change them a bit...carpet or linoleum is easy to install, bathroom fixtures can be changed.

The work and plays are nice but I really like what I have seen from the Livin Lite line so far. Very simple, all aluminum, all business. Any experience with these? They have a 6x15 and a 7x20 that have got my attention.

Wow..your not kidding with those being minimal...nothing to break and gives you the minimum of what you need.

The only thing I dont like about ones like that is that I like to have a bedroom even if the bike is in the RV.

That was actually what made me move to a 5th wheel.  The biggest issue with the travel trailers (but also why they keep them so light) is that you can't use the living room while the bike is inside.  You can use the kitchen (somewhat) and on many of them, you can still use the bedroom.

The big thing to think about is this... Do you want to have to take your bike out of the camper if you arrive very late at night in order to go to sleep?

Second thing that got us to a 5th wheel...most travel trailers have a small access area to get into the bed up front (several new models have side access on 1 or both sides, but that wasnt the case a few years ago).  This means that whoever is sleeping on the far side has to crawl over the other person to pee in the middle of the night...I dont know about you, but after a few drinks in the evening, there is no way I'm making it all the way through the night...and neither is the wife!

Not trying to influence your descision, but want you to think about things :)

Good information. A couple things, 5th wheel is out not going to be an option I would have to buy both a truck and the camper, also we don't drink so we don't have to worry about that lol.

The LivinLites have a pop out bed so you wouldn't have to necessarily back the bike out the back. If we did though, I honestly don't think that's a big deal, at least not to me. It would add maybe 5 mins to the whole operation.

Keep in mind we have traveled the last 2 seasons with just the bike and us. 1 saddlemen bag on the tour pak rack and we have been very happy. We are really just looking at the option to camp and not drop 70+ dollars a night staying in a hotel/motel and having an option to prepare our own meals as well.

The other thing is we live up north. It would be nice to be able to load the bike in the trailer during inclement weather and take a vacation somewhere where we could ride. I also would love not having to try to skirt any major storm when we travel on the bike to a destination.

Wayne
Congratulations on your new bike! Welcome to the site from The Lowcountry of South Carolina!
I hope this may be of interest to you.
Attending a GTG is the best way to get to know the members and put a face to those screen names. Many a lasting friendship have come out of these GTG's,
So. if you want to meet people, ride some awesome roads, kick back and have fun, come to one or all of the GTG's. ( For the newbies out there, GTG = Get Together )
Make your plans now and avoid the rush. In other words, stop pondering and get a hankering and make reservations and attend.
See ya'll there.
The GTG's are in the event section of the board.

Again Welcome
Mike

Take Care
Wayne D.

That's what we all say  :huepfenlol2:
