Title: what windshield ?????
Post by: barrhill on October 19, 2019, 11:01:18 PM
just purchased 2019 mako shark wondering what windshield to go with . on my 2012 tried many but the madstadd was by far the best  I tried and it has made riding much less fatiguing. but I see a lot of good comments about the freedom shield also .  this is my first new fairing design .  maybe  no need for the madstadd.
I am 5,11 32 inch inseam
what's everyone's thoughts

Recommendations are great but not everyone (even with the same build) has the same riding style.

Many dealers and indies have demo windshields to try.    :2vrolijk_21:

Cheers,

I have tried many brands and prefer the Klock Werks Flare because of the downforce it provides. The FE feels more stable at speed. Go to their website, watch the video to find the right size for you.

Definitely talk to John at Freedom Shields. Careful not to go too dark on your RG. Best upgrade you can do for your new bike. Don't forget to mention this site and collect your discount.

I like the Klock Werks 14" Sport Flair.  I'm 6'.

I would try to ride the bike with different shields to see what you like, not everyone likes the same thing.

I've really enjoyed using the Freedom shield on both my '12 SESG and the '15 SERGU.  However, the Freedom was not as effective on the RG as it was on the SG.  I tried and liked the Clearview shield on the RG.  The wind management seemed better with the Clearview on the RG.  The "Rushmore" RG faring seems to direct more wind on the passenger than expected and the Clearview did help alleviate some of that.  If you ride solo, that might not be a big issue as it did a very good job (with the Freedom and the Clearview) of wind management for me.

I went back to the Freedom on Cochise.

I looked at the Klock Werks shield for the RG but was really wanting more wind management and a taller option.  It did look good on the bikes that I saw them on.

Good luck with your choice.  If you are looking for pure optics, you can't beat the Freedom.  Clearview holds a close second.

I have a 9” Klock Werks Sport Flare on my 2019 CVO RG and feel it does a great job of wind management for my height (5’10”). There may be better choices if you want to look through the windshield but I prefer to look over. Compared to the stock windshield if you want to call it that it is a great improvement and in my opinion flows with the lines of the bike.

Been riding RGs for about 12 years, and do not want a tall windshield.  Best shield by far that I have found is Memphis Shades.  I have the 6.5" on my 18 RG, and could not be happier with both the look and the wind performance.  Excellent wind protection.

X2 for the Klockwerks 14” Sport Flare model. The rise is 9”. Suits the bike perfectly. Right size if you’re 6’ tall or more.

I went dark smoke.

has any tried a madstad on the new fairing . it was a game changer on my 12 RG . got 50000 miles on it and would never change buffeting stop which lowered fatigue .
but new fairing is a different animal I presume

2019 CVO Road Glide. I have tried the Klockwerks 9" sport flare, a great looking windshield but it did not work for me due to too much buffeting around the top of my helmet, I tried the 14" sport flare, again too much buffeting plus a lot of optical distortion. I have just now tried the freedom shield 14" and have the same issue, in all cases the buffeting was bad enough to be too uncomfortable. Now I am not sure what to try next, I have come to the conclusion that the reverse curve at the top of these windshields does not work as advertised, it merely creates unstable eddy currents of air. I had the same issue with a windvest shield on another bike but being handlebar mounted, I could rotate it back until the buffeting went away but the downside was more wind blast on my upper torso. I have talked to others who have the freedom shield and it seems to work well for them, not sure why it's a problem for me.

I saw a post on a facebook group yesterday that the guy had put a 10" Madstad on a new style RG and loved it. Might be your best bet.

Myself, I use a 14" Freedom on an RGU with a thicker seat and I'm the same size as you. Only reason I went 14" is so the wife has good protection behind me.

I use the 10'' longrideshield stingray on my bike.  works well for me, and the price was good.  they used to be cheaper, always having sales where you could pick up a shield for less than $75, but now that they are under new ownership, don't have sales as deep.  on sale right now for $119.  for me, the recurve directs the flow of air over my helmet, so I get almost zero buffeting.

Hey neighbor, just wondering what is happening with your specific aerodynamics. I have used and am currently using a Freedom Shield windshield on my 18 RG with great success. I can even ride with my regular eye glasses with no wind issues.
If you are using the proper size (windshield coming up to the bottom of your nose) it should be working as designed. When at highway speeds you should be able to take your ungloved hand and slowly run it up along side your helmet until you feel strong wind coming over your shield, which with the proper size shield, should be right at the top of your helmet. If your windshield passes that test try opening the 3 vents in your fairing to reduce buffeting. This time of year I close the bottom left one and leave the other 2 open, unless caught in the rain then I close all 3. Are you wearing a modular helmet with the front open and sitting above your helmet? If all the above is fitted properly you should be good.
Of coarse there is always the BSR factor that most of us deal with for shocks, seats, windshields and even stereos to be considered.

Good luck!

I have a 2009 SERG and I run a 13” on mine
I’m 6’2” and have only tried the oem shield that came with it, the only shield since then has been the Madstad.
I haven’t heard any complaints from anyone running it on the 2015 on up though. Some think it’s ugly, but I don’t.

Thanks for your suggestions.

The top of the windshield is level with a point just below my nose. It is about right for viewing over the top of the windshield. I have tied taping a piece of clear plastic sheet to increase the height of the windshield. Adding 1/2 inch made little difference, 1 inch was a minimal improvement but still buffeted, and adding 2 inches was surprisingly worse but with a 2 inch increase in height I am now looking through the windshield rather than over it. The wind is curving over the top of the windshield and hitting the top of my helmet. The problem is that the flow is turbulent and therefore uncomfortable. The lower fairing vents make no difference, closing the top vent makes things worse.
