Title: Carb issues
Post by: Vic82 on August 16, 2014, 08:07:18 PM
(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/08/16/2ae6a09703eeb55b8136706e269ff84a.jpg) I recently replace my S&S carb cover and replaced it with a 3" diameter velocity stack (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/08/16/b0facb4b23844868c5fc06b6dcfd38d5.jpg) but know I'm having issues the bike turns off when I'm about to take off on first gear, I really think it's not getting enough air in the carb and also added recommended breather bolts. Anyways its on a 96ci S&S Evolution big bore and the supper E Carburetor, Any advice??

Your combination of straight pipes and S&S carb with a velocity stack is a major tuning nightmare.  :o

Ditto

Some big city thunder baffles and maybe a thunderjet could help straighten things out.

It all sounds true but there has to be a way. I'm leaning on the thunderjet hopefully this will help

How was it running before the velocity stack?

'Don't know how you can say it's not getting enough air? Isn't that what stacks are for?

Is the idle circuit properly adjusted?

An old trick that we used to use for "tuning" the drag pipes:(2 required) weld a 1/4-20 bolt onto a flat washer (big enough to fit in the pipe(s)), drill a 1/4" hole about 12+" from the end of pipe and insert the "home made baffle" into the pipe and rotate them (adjusting backpressure) and carb settings. You just have to make sure that the "hmb" doesn't turn once you find the sweet spot.

The "hmb" works and sounds good, the last 2 bikes were a built 103 TC (SE 51mm) and a 117" Big dog (S&S carb).

+1 on the ThunderJet, 'never used one, but they do add some tuning capability to the S&S

The bike sounded great, I just wanted a different look to it. I can ride it for a while but just sometimes when I take off on first gear it just makes like a fart sound from the velocity part  then  it's turns off and some sort of smoke and bubbling sounds when I park and turn it off. Maybe I should mess with the tuning on the carb?

I think I found the problem.  It was me my pant was getting sucked in from velocity stack when I was taken off or on slow turns that's what made it shut off

Not the first time that has been the problem, for sure.

Make sure the float bowl vent isn't covered, some velocity stacks cover the port
