2019 130" FLTRXSE build with CR-482 and Fullsac exhaust
« on: March 25, 2020, 07:43:18 AM »

I spent a couple months researching my build, with the help of a great friend Joe.  I also spoke several times with Don at HD Street performance.  I also followed Darens posts on HTT on his step by step build with the CR-482.  I was suprized by the power it makes, Brandon the tuner was also.

My build is:
S&S black granite cylinders, punched for 130 by Don
Mahle pistons for 130, coated by Line to Line
Heads done by Don at HD Street Performance set for a 12.1 to 1 with a zero deck height.
HPI 62 throttle body and intake with 6.1 injectors
SE adjustable rockers
SE adjustable push rods
CR-482 Cam
2020 HD 8 lobe oil pump
S&S lifter cuffs
HD extreme Heavy Breather
Recluse Torque drive clutch
Fullsac Head Pipe and 2.25 baffles with tech mat and screens.

163 HP! Wow! Good job on assembling an absolute monster! Very happy Fullsac Performance was your exhaust preference. I'm sure everyone involved in this build has big smiles right now. Please post up on Fullsac Performance's Facebook page.
Thanks!

One of the better builds I have seen!!!! Very impressive... You are making a good 25HP and 10Tq. Then my 128 build with Head work.... I’m very happy it turned out so well for you... Now that’s a Belt snapper... Any plans of going chain drive in the future? I’m considering it and was actually looking for parts last night to make the switch, I already snapped my belt once... NOT fun..

Any problems with starters and that compression?

No I really do not want to go to a chain.  Belts are cleaner and quieter.  How are you snapping yours?  Racing, or WOT shifts?  I figured the clutch or 3rd gear would be weakest link.

Any problems with starters and that compression?

This is a lot of compression for a Twin Cam, but 12.1 with the M8 is not all that high with the right cam.  Factory M8 motors are around 226 to 229 CCP, my bike is at 229 CCP.  So it starts just like stock.

Steve,

I have tired several times to post to the Fullsac Performance facebook page.  Keeps telling me I can not due to page privacy settings.

What effect do you think your new 2.25 baffles would have on this build?

Dave, I snapped my belt doing a rolling burnout shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.. Definitely abuse and 100% my fault.. Unfortunately I love fooling around sometimes and it’s going to happen.... Lesson learned, or I go chain drive..

I can see how that can happen.  I am going to try not to abuse mine.  I worry about hard shifts even with out the burnout part breaking something.

As I mentioned on HTT.

That is a awesome build, Dave.

I am still on the fence on about the build on my M8 CVO RG.

I just can't make up my mind.

Did you do anything with the rest of the drivetrain.....tranny, clutch, etc?

Dave, listed the Rekluse torque drive clutch plates in his build list.

I am going to use the same when I do my build instead of the AIM SDR.

I was waiting to see how the clutch held up on the dyno with David's using the Rekluse TorqDrive setup. I went with the 10 disc SE upgrade on mine with the heavy springs and the AIM SDR. At 6000 rpm you can barely pull the clutch lever. I'll be switching over to the Rekluse when I wear out the one I have now.

I like the steel liners for the basket they supply. Stock clutch feel and same throw as stock. The aluminum baskets gets notchy on these performance builds. Next thing remains to be seen if the splines hold on the basket.

Great job to all involved,  nice build.

I agree on the aluminum baskets getting notchy you could see very slight notches on my basket, with 22K miles on the bike with the only modification being a headpipe and tune.

Rides very well, Joe and I were on a road the other day with nice curves and hill.  You could leave these two builds in 4th great run down as low as 2000 rpm and up to or above 2500 rpm, never shifting and feeling great.

Dave, my 128 big bore build with headwork will finally go to the Dyno and get tuned using SAE this coming Wednesday.. I took off the FM header and put the DD Billet cat on over the weekend and also took off the FM ventilator extreme and replaced it with the new H-D extreme after You showed it worked on our bikes... I will be happily releasing my before and after chart this Thursday or Friday along with my build sheet.... I’m thinking 140Hp and 155-160 TQ.... Not as awesome as your build, But I’m sure I will be smiling 😎

Sounds like it will be very nice.  I look forward to the results.

I think the new Extreme heavy breather has a little more leg room the the factory little heavy breather do to bend of the elbow.

Did my break-in oil change yesterday.  Oil was very clean and not a thing on the drain plug.  The more I ride this the more I love it.  Easier to ride then stock and smoother.

So I wanted to give a shout-out to Dave, and also to Don at HD Street Performance.  When I first read this thread about Dave's 130" build and the numbers he achieved, I figured I'd see if I could do the same build and get the same results.  So I sent a PM to Dave, who quickly and graciously replied and gave me the specs he used and the contacts I'd need to copy his build.  I called Don at HD Street Performance and he couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating.  Don sent me the pistons and cylinders, he has ny stock CVO heads, working his magic on them as I write this.  My local builder is a mechanic at our HD dealership, but also specializes in high-output engine builds and has his own dyno, so he'll be putting everything back together once the heads and other parts arrive from Don.  I'll gladly share my results once the engine is tuned.  But I wanted to publicly thank both Dave here on the forum, and Don at HD Street Performance, for their help with this project.  You guys both ROCK!!!

Looks like some serious power! How is the street ability of these huge power motors? I have a built 117 twin cam and it’s tough to keep it smooth on a bumpy road or in slow moving traffic.

A properly designed and built big power motor should not be hard to ride in traffic or any other situation.  I have a built 117 inch twin came, 138.5 HP and 140 torque.  Easier to ride and smoother than stock.  All the parts are matched to work well together, compression, cam and pipe along with heads.

I now have 3000 miles on my 130" build.  Same people who helped pick and match parts for my 117 helped put this ones parts list together.  The compression is set for the cam we choose, the pipe is know for good low end torque, the heads were set up knowing which cam and compression.  Everything matches again.  The motor is very smooth.  Easy to ride, never had an issue in traffic or a group ride.  It is not jerky or abrupt.  Power come on smooth, there is just lots and lots of it. Only way I can see it being hard is grab a hand full of throttle at 3500 rpm, it will jerk you then.  But again I have done a few group rides on some tight twisty mountain roads, and the dragon, bike is easy to ride and smooth.

Biggest mistakes people make in builds is head pipe or mufflers or both with out enough back pressure, they lead to a big torque dip in the 2000-3000 range where most people ride, this means throttle response is not smooth.  The other mistake is cam and compression are not properly matched.

I'm not an expert.  I do have a good friend who is great it doing this stuff.

I exploded my compensator, I see you used recluse clutch. What about the compesator?

I'm Still on the stock compensator.  So far it seems to be okay, no strange noises.  Yes, I'm pretty happy with the Rekluse torque drive clutch.  I have over 8000 miles on the build now.

The boys at Dark Horse just came out with a "Man of War" comp sprocket that's I have heard is the cats meow! Although I only have around 12k miles on my newest SE comp sprocket. When the time comes, I will be going to "Man of War" Motorsprocket.

I am really pleased with the work they did on my flywheel, they do great work!

Yesterday I hit 10,000 miles on my build.  More I ride it the more I like it and am impressed with it.  I have done a couple 700 mile days on it, half interstate at 80 and half 2 lane roads.  Performed flawless, I have done a large group ride on the BlueRidge Parkway, again no issues, rode in the rain, just be careful with your right hand.  It I road it in the 90's and it does get a bit warm on the right thigh.

In AR had to run a couple tanks of 89 and it did fine.  The bike is a pleasure to ride, will spin back tire with ease if your not careful.

I know there is plenty of power to break parts like belts and 3rd gear and so on.  I do not do burn outs, I do not shift low gears at wide open throttle, or abuse my bike.  That said I do ride it hard, and I do use the power.

It has a bit more power than I was aiming for, but that said, this bike is just so much fun, easy to ride and smooth.  I'll be taking another trip on her next week.  You can build a motor and ride it all over the place or tour on it.

Great to hear Dave!!!! I’m learning my lessons the hard way.... I should have my bike back finally next week... New Baker Grudgebox... Time for me to lay off the throttle and just enjoy the ride.... You have 1 of the MOST impressive builds I have ever seen for a daily riding bike... Just AWESOME 👍😎

I now have just over 15,000 miles on the build we did in March on my 2019.  The bike still runs great and is a total blast to ride.  I have now had one issue with the bike, the rear lower rocker box developed a slight oil leak.  So yesterday we took it apart to replace the rocker box gaskets.  There were no bad spots or marks on the rear lower rocker box gasket, but you could see where the oil was getting by.  The gasket was getting stiff, not flexible like it should be.  This has to be from the heat.  The new gasket is a new H-D part number, it is also a different color.  It was also a little taller, not sure if heat caused the old to shrink, or thats part of why a new part number.

Top of valve stems and rockers looked great, no signs of wear.

Really do not believe the failed gasket has anything to do with built engine

So it's been a  while since I posted about this, but I got my engine build done a few weeks ago, and despite the mechanic lying to me about trimming the cylinders to get zero-deck-height to achieve the proper compression, I still ended up with 155 hp and 154 tq.  Cranking pressure is about 214, so my compression is down .6 or .7 probably.  Happily I found an incredible Harley Shop whose owner used to race Top Fuel Harleys and is a bigger motorhead than I am!  His shop's dyno-tuning took this engine from 149 hp (by the first mechanic) and brought it to 155.  He said if he took the cylinders off and truly did trim them down to achieve zero-deck-height, we'd firmly be in the mid 160's, just like Dave's build.  I'm pondering if I want to spend the extra $1500 or so to get that done.  It's only 6-7 hp, but I'm just kinda determined to get what I paid for, even if I have to pay a bit extra to someone honest enough to get it done.  But like Dave's build, the engine is very docile, there's no big "Hit" in the powerband, it just makes power everywhere.  I haven't done anything silly, no burnouts, no wheel spinning, just enjoying the power that it makes.  Thanks again to Dave and to Don for their help with this.  It truly is an awesome engine now!

Its a very good parts combination for a fun easy to ride bike if you use your brains.  More than enough power to get you in trouble.

Glad your liking the build, sorry you first builder did not do you right.  Sad.

It's all good.  He just needs to invest the money he made from me very wisely.  There's no more coming.  And I'll never miss the chance to tell anyone who asks what I think of his work and honesty, or lack thereof.

When replicating someone else's build you need to consider things like fuel limitations in your area, when traveling and above average heat conditions. For example David's combination works well for his needs including traveling out west occasionally. It will run fine on 89 octane and 90+ degree temps but even better with 93 octane. If you consistently ride 2 up and only have low octane fuel available you would be better around the 11.5 to 11.7 range for compression. Add living in an area with high traffic and extreme heat then 11.2 or so would be better. You're still going to have a tree stump puller but will fit your conditions better. As Blue66s experience shows the builder can effect the outcome by not making sure the clearances during the assembly are correct to produce the expected results.

Any chance other pipes instead of Fullsacs would produce a few more HP?

HP maybe, HP AND Torque both - doubtful. There would be a couple of systems to equal it probably I don't think any one system would be overall better.

I am running the D&D on my 131 build. BUT I am thinking on switching to a fullsac system. I think I would like the factory look better on this bike. Besides the stock exhaust covers are platinum in color. The contrast to the blacked out engine looks good.

That is a nice plus to the Fullsac, stock looking exhaust.  Awesome that it is one of the best performing pipes too.

I think I am going to finally make the call. Not sure on what cores I want. Looking for TQ and I still like to listen to my music!!!

Be Safe

THE DAWG

I run the 2.25.  That was big as he had when I built mine.  I hear he has 2.5 available now.  That said, I like the sound of the 2.25.  They can gt loud when you get on it especially if you have more compression.  That said at interstate cruising speed you can listen to music, they are pretty mellow.

The bigger you go the more torque you give up low.  That said I do not think on a 130 inch motor your giving up anything with the 2.25, I'm thinking with the 1.75 you would be giving up on the top end.

I went with the Fullsac head pipe and 2.25 on my 131 build. HD cam and HD tuner. Very happy. Fullsac stuff works.

Friday, July 9th a year and 3 months after this build something let go.  Not sure what, but in the top end from the sound of it, a valve or piston or ring I think, only a guess right now.  28,155 miles on the build.

Have seen a few rocker shafts break at the flat where they are bolted, or the SE rockers with the feet.

What let go? I have 9000 miles on my build and still running strong. Only thing let go on mine was the compensator

It has the SE adjustable rockers.  Quick check shows no compression on rear cylinder, but front and rear plugs look good.  Will know more as we have tine ti start tearing it down.  Was running fantastic, until it wasn't running

Lost 6th gear on my way home yesterday on the 2019.
3rd gear didn’t look to good either when I pulled it apart today!
I guess too much slop in the gear set not engaging properly and ate up 2 of the shift forks.
Oh well"…………..that’s what happens with “substantial” hp and tq.
Grudge box on the way. Talked to Linda at Baker she was very nice.

Had a real challenge getting the bearing sleeve off the main shaft then the front pulley nut, broke my Chinese puller. Ended up cutting both off.

The rear cylinder had an exhaust valve spring failure.  Very clean break on spring, no chips or missing pieces.  After spring broke it hit the piston a few times before the valve bent and stayed mostly up in the head.  No metal got out of top of head.  This build has 28,155 miles on it.

Could have been so much worse of course; but still sucks.  I know they're not lighter, cooler, faster, they don't smell better and they won't attract women; but that's the reason I always do this.

Sorry Dave.  You going to do anything different with it as it goes back together or just repair and ride on?

Dave, this is a good thread all around, sharing details like this is what I’m looking for all the time. I hate you had a failure but things do break. What are you going to do in this current rebuild project?

Best of luck

Most likely no significant changes to the build.  I will be using different valve springs.  Talking with Don, there have been improvement in the springs since my build.

Sorry to see this happen Dave!

For the most part your build has been pretty bullet proof.

Spent most all of yesterday with a great friend putting the top end back together.  Heads are on, valve train adjusted, intake on, exhaust on, new plugs and new wires in except front left as that plug wire has not come in yet.  Only part I'm waiting on.  After that tank as seat go back on, with saddle bags and she is ready to ride.

Left front plug wire came in yesterday.  Installed it and the remaining parts.  Bike fired right up.  Ran just like before failure.  Put 62 miles on her yesterday.

I went with Kibblewhite, high lift, titanium retainers.

Probably a good idea! I ended up with Fueling and their “race” lifters after getting good feedback from my engine guy.
