MU85B16 tire for 03 SERK
« on: September 22, 2005, 06:46:35 AM »

I saw some post regarding installing a MU85B16 rear tire on an 03 SERK a while back but could not find them.  I have about 12K miles and will soon need a new rear tire.  I would really like to install the slightly wider rear tire which seems to be equivalent to a 140.  I went to Dunlops web site and found the tire is 8mm wider than the 130.  I like the higher load rating and slightly thicker tread.  Does anyone here know what I would need to do to install this tire.  I asked my dealer when I bought the bike, they did not want to answer.  I have heard that it will fit all the way to I will need to replace the swing arm.  Any help would be appreciated.  Of course I can always go with the 130.

I have the 1-1/2 belt on mine and it works fine. It does rub against the tire backing out of the driveway but tracks fine going forward.

HOW CAN I MAKE THAT PICTURE SMALLER?????????

Stick, you need to resize it before posting it.  Just about any graphics editing software gives you a resize option.  Set the resize choice to 800x600 for best display here.

I'll do a quick download and resize of your current picture and email it back to you.  You could then remove the first post and repost it all.  If you don't have a graphics editing package let me know via return email.  I'll send you a link to a little tool that is just a resizer but is totally free and super easy.  Rather than being a separate program it'll let you resize through a couple of menu clicks right from the Windows screen.

I geuss it does fit. Thanks for the advice.  If it rubs backing up, I don't care.  I just don't want it to rub while moving forward.  I can trim the belt gaurd if needed.  I am going to try it this winter.

Its kinda funny that just about all of our bikes has the rear tire off center to the left. The MU85B16 is just a hair or two wider than the 140mm.  The local HD dealer tried mounting the MU85 on 2003 FLHR  and it rubed big time.  The owner took a grinder to the side wall. I cant see it having a chance on a SERK. But im sure it can be done.

I went to the Dunlop web site and found that the 130 is 5.2 inches wide and the MU85B is 5.51 inches wide.  In inches it sounds small but I converted it to milimeters and it is 8 mm wider.  I posted this because I was afraid I would buy a tire and have to later remove it and buy the 130 tire.  I really don't see how my bike has room for the wider tire when it looks awful close with the stock 130.  SO many people seem to use it and how can they be wrong.  Oh well, I have a month or so to make up my mind.

I put a 140 Metzeler 880 on my 03 SERK and all I ended up doing was cutting a little of the belt guard off, but I think it would have been alright anyway.  Actually I'm on my second 140 now.  If you really have a problem when you do it, there are pulley spacers made to move the rear pulley out a little for more clearance.  The front has plenty of room and the belt will just move over.
I believe Custom Chrome has the pulley spacers available in different thicknesses.

According to the respective manufacturer's web sites:
Dunlop MU85B16   =    5.51 inches overall width
Metzler 140/90B16  =   5.75 inches overall width
