Expensive fender!
« on: July 19, 2011, 09:58:45 AM »

While on one of the rides at Ribfest this year I was going through a turn and ran over a rock about the size of your fist.  The front end shifted left and I heard the rock hit what I thought was the bottom of the bike.  While cleaning the bike a few weeks later I noticed about six dents in the front fender.  Turns out that all or part of the rock was picked up by the back edge of the fender and it traveled inside of the fender from back to front.  Guess I was lucky it didn't lock the front wheel up!  New fender $876!

Check one of the discounters - Zanotti, Tri-County, Chicago, etc.  Just checked Zanotti's online site and they list the fender for my '11 RUSE at $752.  Still high but better by 15%.  I think Tri-County might even be less. :2vrolijk_21:

Zanotti are great to deal with. Ordered a fender when mine got hit and it was delivered in less than 3 weeks. Price was 15-20% lower too. Talk to John. He's a good guy.

I know the pain as well.... some IDIOT at work backed into my fender -- destroying it.  I had to order a new one.  MSRP is $876 (Blue Coblat) and I paid $752 from RonniesHD.  Not only is that a problem, but delivery is 45 stinking business days!  That is 9 weeks.  Man, driving around with a pile of crap is not too much fun!

Sorry for your bad luck Tommy, at least you didn't hit the asphalt.  Listen to Chip, you will either get a new fender free or 30 days of incarceration for falsifying a report.   :huepfenlol2:

Check your front tire for a missing wheel weight. They come off and ding the fenders from the inside just like your pictures.

Talk to Chip about it.

Sorry for the dumb question, but how do you check to see if a wheel weight came off?  I have a new CUSE Big Blue w/1,200 miles and just noticed that I have 8-9 dings running down the front fender, very similar to the previous post.  I am just getting ready for a 2,000 mile trip - if a wheel weight came off, I assume I should get that fixed prior to the trip...

Thanks!

Typically, you'll see the remnants of the wheel weight adhesive, but the wheel weight itself is gone....  And yes, if you've lost the weights you'll want the wheel rebalanced.   :2vrolijk_21:

After talking to Chip and reading post from 56FLE, hd brad 03 and HARLEY GUY 5, I took a closer look at the bike.  Sure enough the wheel weights are gone!

Dropping the bike off at the dealer today for the 10k service and a grocery list of things that need to be addressed.  One of which will be the dents!

Thanks guys for saving me $876!

When I first read this thread I got bummed as this happened to me also having a rock hit the front fender. Got a replacment for mine and all is good but still have the old fender and when I see it, it brings back the bad memory. I will have to get that thing fixed so I dont have to look at it.

Tommy, I'm so happy for you seeing that you should get it covered due to the wheel weights missing, sure made my morning seeing how just beloning to this comunity cane save someone some money.

Well not quite as much as you think, found a custom fender at a swap meet that was painted to match my b&b seeg $50. Took some buffing and there is a dent where it hit from compressing but it cant be easily seen and it looks so good till I figure what I'm going to finally do with this bike.

Well not quite as much as you think, found a custom fender at a swap meet that was painted to match my b&b seeg $50. Took some buffing and there is a dent where it hit from compressing but it cant be easily seen and it looks so good till I figure what I'm going to finally do with this bike.

Sorry for your bad luck Tommy, at least you didn't hit the asphalt.  Listen to Chip, you will either get a new fender free or 30 days of incarceration for falsifying a report.   :huepfenlol2:

I also notice there are no weights on the rear wheel.,

When the front ones came off the dealer put some more on but they also came off, found one set just laying next to the tire.

I do fill like I'm on a wash out road going down the road at 60mph, so i put the centeramatic on the front but still fills rough. (bouncy

When the dealer puts the new fender on this weekend i will have them pull the rear tire and put the centramatic on it, and spin the front wheel to see how she balance out.

I think i have put over 2500 to 3000 miles on the bike with tires being out of balance not sure if they have started cupping and this my be part of the rough ride

When they change the fender they should also change the tire.
Good luck and let us know.

I just noticed 2 cracks in the front fender passenger side where it is obvious two weights came off.  I will further inspect and take pictures tomorrow.  6 weeks old and 2700 miles so far.  Two weeks age we went to the Smokey Mountain National Park and came back to NJ with a couple of hunderd miles on the BRM Parkway.

This seems to be an ongoing issue with these new wheels, has anyone figured out if it is a glue issue or something to do with the powder coat finish and sticking the weights on prior to full cure?  I would think MOCO would be working hard to fix the issue with all the fenders they have had to replace due to a faulty wheel weight.

Going with Dyna beads when I get time. I didn't even to think about the weight coming off. Doubt it was a weight that caused a nick in the left slider tube and broke the reflector but something caused it. I heard the hitand thought it was something I hit on the road. Maybe the Misses can take a look and see if the tire weight is still on there.

I went with Centramatic's , but started with new tires.  Looks great with no weights
hanging on the rims.  I have almost 5k, and it's still real smooth, with even wear.

Departed 8 days ago on my 11.5 Big Blue for the Blackhills with 950 miles on the odometer of my new scoot. On day one threw a wheel weight and now have 5 in-lines dings on the front fender. On day two it threw the remaining two front wheel weights with no damage. Just got home and will be at the dealer's on Monday. Sure hope the info in this thread gets me a new fender. Thanks guys!!

At what point does it become cost effective for the MoCo to do a recall and glue the wheel weights on so that that don't fly off destroying these expensive fenders?  :nixweiss: just wondering out loud.  spyder

My guess is the small percentage that they are replacing under warranty are those that find out about the issue on forums such as this. The rest of the owners that are finding dents in their fenders are probably going on the assumption they picked up a rock or something and damage happened that way rather then knowing the real cause was of faulty wheel weights. :nixweiss:

Look at the subject of this thread. Tommy would have bit the $876.00 bullet if I hadn't shown him the light.
What was I thinking?

Correct, I assumed i had picked up a rock until i got the info from this site. Sure enough all the wheel weights were gone & Harley is replacing the front fender on warranty. Being a member of this site saved me a grand.

I agree, this is definitely for recall. It happend to me as well on my 2011 Rio Red, exactly same damage on front fender and missing wheel weight after 1500 Miles!!!. Let's spread the word, must be more of them out there.

Just got home from my dealer to see what they would do about my recently added front fender wheel weight dings. Told the Svc Mgr about the number of incidents reported on CVOHarley. He took one look and wrote down my mileage and walked back to his desk and ordered me a new fender. Super service but it never should have happened.

Thanks again to all of you for the heads up!!

I've started a poll on 2010 & 2010 fender replacements. It's under general CVO discussion. Anyone that has problems with the wheel weights slinging off & damaging their fenders, sign in. I'm trying to find out how bad of a problem we are having with these wheel weights. I believe that we need to inform all our CVO brothers & sisters to be aware of this problem. This has got to be costing the MOCO plenty to replace all these fenders. Everyones $.02 wanted.

I have had the noids about the crummy weight application for years...annnnd the fact you dont get chrome ones.   >:(

I have lost fronts and backs....I keep them in a saddlebag...chrome and a couple of alcohol wipes...None have flown off sine I took the old ones off and put the new ones on...centered in the radius of the rim....unlike the oem slapons... >:(

If I didnt like my fairing monkeys so much I would send them to HD to build bikes .... :coolblue:

If your dealer will not contact the MoCo on your behalf find another dealer and/or contact the MoCo Customer Service directly at 414-343-4056. They (MoCo) are well aware of this problem and it's also well documented on this site of this problem and they (MoCo) replacing the fenders under warranty.
