HD wont replace my pitted rocker box cover
« on: May 26, 2020, 01:41:35 PM »

Have some looks to be pitting under the chrome on my rocker box cover & cam cover. Took to dealer & they took pics. Just got notified that HD denied my claim. Reason is if there is more than 2 items claimed with same problem they feel like they don't have to replace it. Said there is something in the manual that states this... Well if they don't replace it this will be my last HD bike I will ever buy....I called HD customer support & they are gonna look into it some more.. My bike is still under factory warranty..

That make no sense to me but then again a lot of things mother Harley does (or won't do) don't make much sense.  Good luck and hope you get it covered under warranty.   :2vrolijk_21:

It's not the first time someone at Harley tried to pull that "won't cover more than one chrome part" horse hockey, but under current laws they can't blow this off so easily under the factory warranty.  Unless they can prove the pitting is from something that happened to the bike after you took possession, like contamination by a caustic chemical that attacks cheap chrome, they have to cover the defect.  If the only chrome parts on the bike that are pitting are the rocker covers, it's pretty obvious the problem is related to the manufacture of those covers and not some nebulous atmospheric pollution or other hogwash.

I'm pretty sure that one part only thing was originally created for non-warranty policy adjustments, where they agree to cover damaged, not defective, parts.  Someone at H-D has been telling dealers and customers that also applies to warranty items, and it does not.  Take them to small claims court if they don't do the right thing.

Or pull up on their parking lot on a Goldwing or a used Harley you paid a lot less for and bought somewhere else and tell them to go reproduce themselves.

It's just cast aluminum with flash chrome.  These chrome parts pit up pretty quickly.

Yup, and those pits (and flaking on some) is a manufacturing defect.  It is difficult to plate aluminum for reasons I've mentioned many times in the past, but that doesn't mean it can't be done if the parts are prepped properly and the process controlled properly.  Some people do it and produce excellent chrome plated aluminum parts.  Those people don't tend to be in China and selling based on price only to cheap bstrds like Harley however..

I heard the same crap when I bought my 2009 Road Glide.  I think the real reason for them denying the claim is they get dinged by HD for warranty claims.

I had a heck of a time getting my seat replaced.  The original 2009 CVO Road Glide seat was not properly built and the front tongue would pop out from the frame and the seat would come loose as you road down the road.  There was really no concern on the dealers part that this was a real safety issue.

Write a letter to the HD CEO and state what you posted.  Then, follow that up by buying your next bike from Honda, Indian, BMW, etc.

Best of luck, it does get frustrating at times dealing with warranty claims.

In the mean time I'll bet someone here could "pay it forward" with their take off chrome parts, from when they blacked theirs out.

Well verdict is not going to replace it. Reason is if u claim more than 1 piece with same problem they consider it an environmental damage.  Bunch of B.S.

Assholes.  By the same logic the same circumstances could just as easily be stated as the manufacturer not being able to supply components that cosmetically survive your environment.  Two sides of the same coin.

Was this "verdict" from the dealer's mouth or the MoCo's?  And if it was from the dealer saying it was from the MoCo are you sure?  And in either case have you mentioned to the dealer that you were THEIR customer and not the MoCo's so if they expect any future business from you that you expect them to make issues right no matter what the Mother Harley says?

From dealer and the MoCo.  I requested to speak with a manager so waiting on phone call back from them within next 48 hrs. This might be the last HD I ever buy and I will surely tell them thsat but I’m guessing they don’t really give a chit anyway.

If they tell you to piss off don't be replacement parts from them.  In fact don't buy parts from any Harley shop to avoid putting more money in the company's pocket.  There's interesting looking aftermarket alternatives or just take yours off and get them powdercoated to match a predominant color on the bike. A little more color is rarely a bad thing.

They really do not care any more.  Their quality has gone way down hill.  Was a Major fight to get them to replace my seat on my 19 CVO with only 10K miles on it.  Looked like it had over 50K, very worn, discolored and looked old.  Even sent them pictures of my seat and a 3 year CVO seat with 40K miles on it, which looked new.  After two month of fighting I finally got a new seat.  My dealer was very helpful in this.

If you can, get your dealer on your side.  Mine has helped me on more than one issue when MoCo says no

In 10 years I have got one of the 10 plus call backs I have been promised.  I just keep calling and calling.

No they really do not care about the customer at all.  Its been getting worse and worse over the past 5 years.

Perhaps if the MoCo offered some type Screamin’ Eagle “We Care” plan.  You pay an additional $1,500 at purchase and get the We Care Plan...where the MoCo will return your call within a week.  Does not transfer to a new bike and renewal required yearly.

Your average is better than mine. I'm still waiting for one call back from ten years ago.

I read this entire thread and feel for ya, news.  I moved away from HD and have not looked back.  While I've not had this same issue you are having, the seat (and other) problems Dave has had, I have had MANY issues on other things MoCo related for over 30 plus years of ownership and 40 plus dealing with Harley...and had to ask forgiveness more than a few times for some of the words I've used.

I am not saying the grass is greener on the other side with another brand but at least the other side I chose has green grass and better customer service (and a much better ride, stock).  I was hesitant to move but did my homework and jumped.  Maybe this is the push you need to move.

I don't know if I will ever purchase another Harley.  I did visit SMHD recently.  It had been a year and a half since I went into the last HD dealer.  I didn't see anything on their showroom that pulled at me, calling me back.  I got back on my Chieftain and headed off, still very pleased with the move.

Well after some posts I made on Facebook about this situation. I had an HD dealer reach out to me about what problem was. I explained the the SM and they said to send them some pics and stuff and they would see what they could do for me. Granted this dealer is about 4 hrs away. So maybe it will get a resolution.  I did call the customer support again also and they said they see where I’ve called requesting someone to call me back.  Well I’m still waiting.  Told the lady I would never buy another HD product again if this wasn’t covered. Said she would put a note about what i said.

Well 2nd dealer had no luck either getting this resolved. I made another phone call to the HD line & requested a manager to call me back. I advised the person on phone that this would be my last HD bike id purchase if this wasn't taken care of. And that I would tell anyone I came across about this experience. They just don't seem to care.. Still blaming it on ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE. I said bike has 3200 miles on it & kept in garage.. But whatever im almost done with it now. HD is loosing the market share. The younger generation aren't buying  a 30k motorcycle. Just wait about 6 months till all these people that bought a new HD with there stimulus money & got no payments till 2021. I bet there will be a lot of repo's coming for HD finance..

Well well a manger finally called me back today after almost 3 weeks and numerous phone calls. Said was going to send all my info and pics they got from dealer to higher ups to see if gonna cover it or not. Said would let me know next week of the decision.   I explained to him I’ve bought only CVO’s since 2007 and this would be my last HD bike if not covered. Said the customer reps noted that in there notes. So guess will see what happens next.

It shows up well enough in the pics...looks to be a manufacturing problem.  If you don’t get satisfaction, I’d write the new HD CEO, give him a little history, and include the pics.

I plan on sending a letter to the CEO if it doesn’t get replaced. Exactly my complaint how can it be environment.  Bike has 3200 miles and stays in garage. Guess will see what happens next

Fantastic.  Good for you.  It's a shame you gotta 'fight city hall' to get these things resolved.  Glad it's working out for you.

Glad you are getting them replaced under warranty... H-D spent more time & energy fighting you than the time/cost to replace them. SMH!!!

It's the same strategy they've used for a long time now, deny knowledge of a problem, claim whatever you complain about is normal and "they all do that", claim whatever you complain about is your fault or the fault of some outside force that is not their responsibility, etc.  Occasionally they get worn down when a customer refuses to give up and they finally do the right thing.  The rest of the time it becomes necessary to sue them, which is something most people are reticent about (and they know that).  It's the same strategy used by many purveyors of low quality crap, and it's the reason I swore off the brand more than ten years ago.  Companies that treat me that way lose my business, and companies that do the right thing and just take care of problems immediately gain my loyalty.  If everyone would do the same, we could either change the bad actors or run them out of business, their choice.  Too bad there are so many people who just cave, then go back and spend another pile of money with the same people that screwed them.

Very Glad they are replacing your rocker box, as they should with out the fight.

Friday my bike goes in for 30K service, and to have them look at the gas filler ring that the cap screws in.  Paint is flaking off.  Wonder how big a fight that will be.

Out of curiosity, do you keep pool or lawn chemicals in the garage near the bike? If so, they could be contributing to the problem.

Congrats on making progress with the MOCO. I hope you will spread the good news as much as you spread the bad.

Congrats on making progress with the MOCO. I hope you will spread the good news as much as you spread the bad.

Chemicals stored in the garage has been a Harley response in the past, as well as the "salt air near the beach".  I remember one guy in Atlanta was given that salt air thing; I had no idea the ocean levels had risen so much Atlanta was now a seafront community.  The real facts are that Harley has been trying to avoid paying on many warranty items, because their warranty expense has grown by leaps and bounds.  It's the same reason the ESP companies have all raised their rates.

Yes, some corrosive chemicals can damage paint and plated surfaces.  If you park your bike in a shed that has open bags of chemicals and spills on the floor, you probably shouldn't blame anyone else for your paint or chrome pitting and flaking.  However, if you just have unopened containers sitting in a normal garage, and no chemical spills on the floor, it's not the chemicals causing the problem.  Also, when the plating on only one part fails but all the rest of the plating and paint on the bike is OK, that is not a case of environmental damage.  It's defective plating, plain and simple.

I'm happy someone at Harley finally saw the light and did the right thing in this case, but considering all the BS and blow-offs prior to this decision, I don't think he needs to fall over backward singing Harley's praises.  I tend to reserve that praise for companies that just step up from the beginning and take care of their legal obligations, or even exceed their obligations to satisfy a customer.

I do have some but there in a sealed 5gallon buckets. I just needed a manager to call me back instead of talking with the CSR. But with all this COVID-19 crap most of HD are working from home and he said they’ve been swamped.  But it’s getting covered and I’m happy now. Had a dealer quote me over $500 to replace and that was with a 15% part discount and $100 off labor.  I was just gonna live with it if they didn’t cover it.
