Saddle Bag Latch, Broken Springs
« on: April 16, 2007, 08:44:24 PM »

Has anyone replaced the little springs on the saddle bag latches?  If so could you explain how ya did it?  The springs are available from the dealer but it appears that the pin is welded to the hinge on one end.  Seems as though you can't remove it unless you grind off the weld to drive out the pin.  After that,  how will ya keep the pin in?

Thanks

Did you figure it out? I don't have an answer but I would be curious as to what you come up with. :nixweiss:

Both of mine were broken.  I ground off the ends, replaced the springs, and rewelded the ends.  Now, 10 months later one of them is broken again.  Another POS designl...what a pain in the ass.  I think that I will just live with it broken.

Those are decent instructions, as already stated spring failure is due to the spring hanging up on the shaft, they are out of the way and often neglected, if you oil the spring and shaft once a year they should last for many years.

Replaced a bunch of them.  One side is not welded - you pry it open with a screwdriver, remove the pin and replace the spring.  The newer ones appear to be stainless and have a little bend in them - hopefully they will last longer.  Be sure to use vise grips to pinch the hinge back together.  If you don't, the pin will slide out.  Don't ask me how I know.......

Yep, Like EFRBC1 said, I had to do it to my 04 SEEG in 07. And I thought the proceedure was outlined in the shop manual pretty well. Thanks for the tip on using a little oil. Cause replacing the spring sucks.

On a related note, has anyone experience paint chipping and/or wear at the saddlebag lid where the top edge of the latch comes in contact with the lid when the latch is lifted while opening. It seems like a clearance issue, but there's no adjustment.  I've never seen that type of wear on any other bagger.  I replaced the broken springs, had the lids repainted and the problem persisted.  I even tried shimming the latch/hinge assembly out for more clearance and it still rubs.  Hope somebody else has seen this...am I missing something obvious?  PJ

PJ,
You using the stock latches or have you changed them out?

I changed mine to the Chrome Billet Saddlebag Latch Kit
and had the same problem you are describing.... did the same things you did to try to shim it out... ended up putting a little piece of the 3M tape like is found under the seat to keep it from rubbing the paint and haven't worried about the paint anymore.

Kewl, glad to help. Just put a little piece of the tape on the saddlebag lid where it is coming in contact w/the latch and you should be good to go. :2vrolijk_21:

Yeah...after another repaint!  A good winter project now that we're buried in a foot of snow here in WI.  PJ
