09 Throttle
« on: February 27, 2010, 11:42:30 PM »

Holy crap.  I was in Arizona last week travelling east towards Phoenix with about 6 other guys.  We pulled off onto an offramp so one of the guys could adjust his shaps.  I was in the lead so i stopped once and must havee decided the spot was not wide enough so went a little further.  From there i recall nothing.  I was told the Bike, a 09 Road Glide SE CVO, took off, literally going airborne.  It rolled over 4 times with me attached somehow with my arm.  It ended up on top of my head.  I had my full face helmet on, thank god.  The bike is totalled, and i was in the hospital trauma unit for 3 days.  Had a broken arm and many cuts and bruises.  Has anyone had any problems with the electronic throttles undersireably opening up?  I am lucky to be alive.

Both by the same person... first thread is about his accident and the second is about surgery/recovery.

Sorry for you "accident - malfunction" but MOCO
would never admit they have or may have a problem like Toyota.

HOLY CRAP is putting it mildly. Thank the GOOD LORD that you survived and you are able to tell us about it. I wish you all the physical and mental strength you need to put this incident behind you.
I have been watching the Toyota situation for some time and I'll put my money on it ultimately being a problem with either the electrical wiring or the computer program or both causing the sudden acceleration.
That being said, I'm far from a confidence level with the "Throttle By Wire" on my '09 SEUC. I have experienced sticking throttle cables in the past both with carbs or FI, but since that happens AFTER you open the throttle, you are expecting the motor to accelerate and can deal with it via clutch / kill switch. Having a motor go from idle to full throttle totally without warning will put any of us on the ground. Not good!! Hmmm, I have had heated grips repaired twice, both due to "bad wires in handlebars", what's next?
Again, best wishes to you and keep us posted.

It shouldn't be but I'm just not a believer in TBW from H.D. Everyone understood cables and if there was ever a prob. it was generally easily corrected. We've heard several instances of crashes regarding uncontrolled acceleration and even if you don't crash you're pretty much screwed until the dealer and mess w/ it.

Anyway, glad you survived a terrible thing and thanks for passing it on. The bike can be replaced but you can't.

I dont know whether the throttle stuck or not.  people behind me said it looked like it did.  i have not seen the bike yet.  the insurance company has it.  i plan on getting some other model this time.  i am a little leary of this bike.  i am in a lot better shape than the other guy who posted here.

It's good that you are okay!  That was a bad place to happen, no time to react to anything.  Much better if it happened while actually riding down the road IMO.

Unfortunately, Whether we like it or not, TBW is the new standard.  Big Rigs have used it for years, and even dirt bikes use it now.  I still prefer the feel of a cable, but I put 42K on my 2008 FLTRI with no incidents.

I hate to be argumentative in this thread, but I don't agree with this.  There have been no findings of any problems with Toyota's DBW.  I've also spent a year of my life doing research and application of CAN-bus and other differential bus protocols.  For there to be an erroneous WOT situation with CAN there would have to be repeat correctly formatted packets transmitted on the bus.  This rules out noise from causing the problem.  Noise isn't a problem on a differential bus anyway.  This basically leaves the throttle position sensor with incorrect readings making and transmitting continuously incorrect packets.  I'd argue that the TPS is as likely to fail transmitting any number of throttle positions as it is WOT. I haven't seen any Mean Time Between Failure numbers for the HD part, but I'd be shocked if the MTBF rate was higher on the TBW than the old cable system.
