Heard a strange noise comming home from work today that I haven't heard up till now. coasting down a long not so steep hill I hear this howl that sound like a air howl. only it wasn't air. Somewhere in the back of the front tire or the front of the engine low. Any one else ever hear something like this?

Close... read this, very interesting. Maybe the two issues are connected?

Check your tires for cupping. The best way is to just close your eyes (to focus on "feel") and run your hand around the outer edge of the tire tread. It can start, even when you've got a lot of tread left. :nixweiss:

Ill check it out. I just got back from a 2000 mi trip and it could be a tire coming up on 10,000

What's your mileage?

I sure hope the noise isn't in the primary. :nervous:

Any Werewolves in the area? :nixweiss:

I checked for cupping, I cant tell if it is or not Ill have the dealer check when I take it in this week for the 10000 mi service. I did measure the tread and was suprised that the front was at 3/32 and the rear was at 5/32. anyone else checked. The warranty only covers at above 3/32 as I read it.

sounds like you need a front tire i have always had the back tire wear out first on old bikes havent went far enough on the new one to know yet thanks terry.

I have definitely heard the same noise... :confused5:

Mine started howling at about 4K miles. It does it at all speeds. Please post what you find.

at 10k Miles...I'd be looking at tires and wear.

You are correct on the 3/32 tire depth requirement for tire warranty coverage.

I had tire checked at two dealers. Both say nothing wrong with tire. I can only hear the sound on a blacktop road and it has to be a quiet area. Hard to find close around here.

That sounds familiar......that's what I was told by the dealership. Jim (hd-dude) was the one that told me it was my tire. Rode it for several more weeks and the noise got louder (only on certain roads) till I finally changed the tire......the noise was gone instantly. :2vrolijk_21:

I have no idea how those dealers "checked" the tire, but it shouldn't surprise anyone that a Harley dealer tells you something is "normal". I'm pretty sure it's part of the franchise agreement and one of the first things a new dealer is taught, everything is "normal" until the mothership says otherwise. And the mothership only says otherwise after at least a year or more of trying to wiggle out of any responsibility.
Take your bare hand and cup it lightly over the tread, slide your hand over the tire in one direction, then back in the other direction. Does the tread feel smooth in both directions, or do you feel sharp edges when you slide your hand one way? The first indications, before the abnormal wear becomes visible, are found by feel.
