My bag fell off and please, don't tell me I didn't secure it well. I was on the way to #SierraStakeOut and well packed. I was reading a thread where someone suggested plastic ties and then someone responded, "I am not using plastic ties on a $30,000 bike." I loved that response but Harley's not doing anything for me so it just may be the case.... :(
Unfortunately, mine is not one of these models however, I thought some of you may appreciate this info. It was sent to me by a friend via text and it's all I know.

I had a bag jump off once, only once... My bags are now bolted on. There isn't anything behind them that I need to get to that I can't take a few extra minutes to unbolt the bags. My jumper was on a new bike that I had not touched the bags yet. That wasn't an enjoyable moment. >:(

Mine are bolted too, never had an issue with the OEM coming loose, just like the bolts.

Sorry to hear about your your bad luck. And I'm sorry to say you didn't secure them properly. However it was not your fault. It is impossible to secure them adequately with the stock fasteners. Now is when others will say how the stock fasteners are fine and they have had no problems. Good for them. They may never fall off but park in the wrong place and they will be gone in 60 seconds. Bolt them on or get aftermarket fasteners and through those stock pos fasteners away.

The problem is one of magnitude. The POS mounting system Harley used on the CVO Deluxe models should have been recalled and redesigned, but the small number of bikes sold with that system didn't get the attention of the safety folks (obviously). On the other hand, the problems with the saddlebag Dzus style fasterners on the Touring models represented a large volume of bikes, and it's a lot harder to hide those kind of numbers from the safety folks. Even after doing a recall on those, Harley had to do it over again because they screwed it up and people still had failures. Rather than wait for Harley engineering to hire someone competent to fix the problem, many people chose to just bolt the bags on. I'm not sure what the best approach is on the Deluxe system, but strapping them on like in those threads on this site recommended will probably be less onerous than paying $900 for a new bag when one falls off. It sucks that Harley blew this off, but they've been blowing known safety issues off for decades and getting away with it. When you get pizzed enough you stop buying their crap. As long as people keep buying it, obviously Harley figures why step up and do the right thing.

I bought some 5/16 U nuts and bolts at lowes pretty cheap for the rearward bag mounts.

Anyone compared the 14s to the 16+ to see what they changed that the recall doesn't include the 16s and 17s?

Yes on my 2017 the connectors cannot be popped off with a screwdriver and they are screw in that cannot just pop off.
Picture is a stock picture and not mine, but it is the same color as my wife's.

My '17 CVO Limited has the new bolts. The old ones were pretty sketchy, but with over 65,000 miles bewteen 2 different bikes with those fasteners, I had no mishaps. The new bolts also have a ribbed gear-like face so that as it tightens in, you can feel it click-click-click or "ratchet" in (for lack of a better term). I don't see any way that the new fasteners are working themselves loose.

I did the same thing. My right bag did fall off and it was a few months past the warranty. I had the recall done earlier when it came out so my dealer worked with HD and I had everything replaced at no cost. After that work was done I put on the U bolts and they have always been tight.

I bought the hardware for the 17's and installed it on my '15, see post #8.

Buddy of mine with a '14 had his fly off doing 75 so pretty much all of us with the wire locking went and bought the '17 mounting kits and installed those.

the new system hd uses on the 17s is very similar, except that the 'u-nut' is much more robust than the thin piece of metal in the other kits. it's a little more expensive, but i like it fine.
