Title: 117 Build
Post by: Mr. Warlock on January 01, 2018, 08:40:15 AM
Getting ready to start my 117 build.

Build details:
117 HD Cylinders
Pro Street Porting and valved by Don at HD Street Performance
11:1 compression
Pistons - Diamond Racing w/ 7cc domes
S&S Piston Jet Oilers
T-Man 590 Cams
SE adjustable push rods
S&S Premium Lifters
Thayer 3 stage oil pump
Billet cam plate with 42lb spring
S & S Crankshaft
New HD lefty bearings
Alto Carbonite clutch plate kit
AIM VP-SDR
T-Mann No Loss Air Cleaner
Chrome Inner Primary

I plan on dyno tuning with both a complete Fulsac system with 1.75 baffles and a D&D Boarzilla.

New cylinders and spare heads I bought I had done by HD Street Performance (Don) have been painted Pearl Black. I thought I would try my hand at fin cutting (attached picture), heads are done, still need to do the cylinders. - Update - Cylinders are now cut.
Not perfect but I thought came out pretty good.

Will be painting the rest of the motor Pear Black when disassembled.

Nice job on the fins!
Agree.
Diamond Heads has a patent on that. They hurt a lot of people doing that for money.  >:(

Yep, they have a BS patent based on a false and unverified claim of heat reduction that did hurt at least two others that were making a meek living from offering this service. They can't stop me from doing my own though.

Mr. Warlock, I live up the road in Elon area and was contemplating doing the 117 to mine. Are you doing the work or someone you know?

The diamond cut looks great and was thinking about doing the same to mine although I am not sure how good it would look on the granite

care to share any tips on how you did the diamond cut yourself

Good luck on the build, I will follow it

Update......

Finally able to get back at this. Motor and tranny both out of the bike. Motor completely disassembled, next to press out main and cam bearings, install new and then do the black pearl painting.

Updated with the building specs on original post.

Just for info, the compensator has close to zero signs of wear.
Chain tensioner has some wear but nothing to worry about.
Pistons and valves are caked up with carbon pretty good but show good condition.
Crank was at .003 run out and all bearings seem right.
I had one lazy lifter prior to taking apart but in addition to that I can see the beginning stages of rollers finish starting to give away.

Anyone heard of HD lefty bearing retainer failures?

Just had my 117 done from the ground up and builder refuses to use HD lefty bearing retainers as the little screws can vibrate loose and let everything walk so they use a complete sleeve setup.
Said it happened twice to them before switching to the in house solution.

Glad to see you have got all your diamond cutting done. You have way more patience than I could ever have. Good luck as the rest goes together. Waiting to hear how it turns out

How did it turn out? I just did a very similar build but am at 10.7 to 1 compression. Same cam, head and valve work done by suburban speed. I’m going to have it retuned, but so far it’s at 124HP and 133TQ.

Anyone had any experience with the Screamin Eagle 117 bolt on kit 9500054 for the 110 CVO motor?

Yes there are quite a few of us who have made the jump with factory 117 kit

Can you share what size bit you used for cutting the heads and cylinders?

Did you strip the powder coating or just paint over it? Getting ready to do the same thing here, not sure which route I am going to go on the finish of the motor yet. Looks really good, nice job! :2vrolijk_21:

First post here:
Been riding for a few years on a hand-me-down sportster but Ive been looking at big bikes since the first of march. The pro streets have my attention and have been looking and pricing around since. Local dealer has a 2016 white 420 miles asking $19,995 asked what they will go down to and immediately dropped $1k off the price; left it at that and kept looking. Few weeks go by and a 16 black pops up with the 117ci kit installed 3800 miles for $23k. Dealer with the 117ci kit said no warranty on motor, other has warranty. Assuming I could get the bike with the 117ci kit for less than asking would it be worth the risk for the upgraded engine? thanks

Jordan, I would ask if they have any records on the engine - who did what and what was done. That is a starting point and really a personal choice.

You might get better responses if you ask this on a different thread. Best of luck and welcome

Very nice build. Been wondering how the 590's would work in the 117. Looks like they worked out well. Your work on the jugs and heads really makes that motor shine. You should be very proud of your work.  :2vrolijk_21:

Great job. It is a pleasure to work with an owner that has good attention to details and goes all the way to the end with a good tune to assure the best result and a motor that will live.

Really nice torque curve.  I like it when torque comes on nice and early like that and carries a long way.  Brandon has tuned my last two bikes, my built 13 CVO King, a 117 build and my 18 CVO Road Glide.

I am at the point where I am planning my 117 build.  It will be the SE kit with just the jobs and pistons.  I've talked to Tman and he is suggesting the 625PS.   I'm curious how you decided to go with the 590?
Title: Re: 117 Build
Post by: HD Street Performance on May 27, 2018, 10:43:11 AM
The cam choice is tied to the head characteristics and compression plus the ultimate goal. The pipe plays very importantly in this choice. If Tman suggests a 625 for you its does not make it a good fit for all other 117" builds unless the mating hardware matches and the combination will help you reach your goal. The 590 is a productive cam in this combination, not always the smoothest at the lowest of speeds. The 625 would be smoother but make less power and work in the ~10.5 compression area. Tman has cams that can go up from the 590 and generally the higher the HP level and compression the lowest speed manors get a little snotty. This does not always reflect in a dyno curve which is not like realistic street riding. Full throttle in high gear, 2000ish rpm to redline. I am currently using some other cams that have wider LSA angles and they provide a little more overall smoothness without a loss of any power or torque plus they are very valve train friendly.

Thanks for the reply.

My plan is to stay with the stock heads for now, so compression will be about 10.1 or so with the .030 HG.  Pipes are FM Jackpot 2-1-2.  Currently RCX 4.5 slip-ons, but may switch to CVO cans with Fullsac baffles 2 or 2.25 baffles to help on the low end.

Two up riding primarily and looking for smooth, low end torque improvements more than all out high (5K+) RPM power.  I'd like to see the torque a bit left of that which Mr Warlock shows on his dyno run.  I must say, his mid and upper results are excellent.

Consider Harleys SE585 then. It matches your goals, the compression, and the other parts.
Consider the actual feel of the bike stop light to stop light is not always reflected by these dyno graphs and that should be the important takeaway from my response.

X-2 on the SE 585  more than pleased with this cam 121/136 nice low end grunt, moves that 900 lb bagger pretty well.

Justin and Brandon are top notch in my book. I wouldn't let anyone else touch my bike other than myself of course. These are honest hard working guys which is hard to find these days.
