Title: '14 CVO Road King Heavy Breather Rattle
Post by: harleychef2011 on August 30, 2014, 09:12:54 PM
Had new V&H Power Duals and pipes put on and it caused an extreme rattle at about 2800 RPM on the heavy breather air filter unit.  If anyone else has this problem the dealer identified its the "t" slot where the Screaming Eagle badge on the outside of the housing fits in on the front side (facing the front wheel).  Not sure what exactly they did to fix it... but it worked!  Was driving me CRAZY!!!!

I had a extreme rattle at highway speeds coming from my heavy beather but it was 2 screws that came loose and fell off.  When I got a new set of screws and locktited them in the rattle whent away.  The problem i'm having now is a loud clicking sound when I down shift and comes in when I approach 50mph and then goes away at about 35mph.  Thought it might be the valves because there high duration but if that was true then the clicking sound would be there all the time?  I also have the transmission rattle and muted it somewhat by changing the transmission oil to Lucas 75w140, muted but still there. Also have a primary chain slap when the engine is idling rough but I guess that probably is normal for a Harley?

Thank you both!  I will check mine, remove bolts, put some loctite... trying to be proactive to avoid issues.

Just an update....  rattle came back!  Through dealer advice...ended up putting a small slice of 3M mounting tape between the air filter housing and the Screaming Eagle badge in front and behind the wedge that fits in the housing unit.  Worked like a charm!

Harley Chef... seems I'm having this same, annoying rattle a similar rpm range. If I set the cruise and put my hand on the front of the heavy breather- the rattle subsides. Is this 3M tape you describe "double sided/sticky"?  I'm going to have to do something, as it's really annoying. Thanks, Tractor Bubba

Yes Tractor... slide a small piece of it inbetween the front side of the logo "arm" piece and the cover.  There's a small gap that causes the rattle.

Going to have to remember this little trick if my heavy breather ever does this. Good info!

Thanks for the reply, Chef!

Will try this, as sometimes I forget to install my current remedy - foam ear plugs.
