Road King Wind Shield w/Wind Splitter......Like or Dislike?
« on: April 10, 2015, 08:48:41 AM »

Got a couple hundred miles on the Road King now and not sure about the wind splitter windshield.  I like the way it looks but can't tell any difference when the wind splitter is open or closed.  And just seem like a lot of buffeting.

I was wonder if most are keeping or have replaced the wind splitter with a more traditional windshield and if so....who's brand and some pic would be nice.

Thanks
Cat

I am thinking of getting a regular/traditional shield as well. I figure with one of each I can use the taller regular shield for 2 up highway riding and then the splitter around town during the week.  Hope to see some pics others have.

I like my Windsplitter. I have bought a Klock Werks shield also for winter riding and for long trips. I found that the flap on the Windspliter can be adjusted to all but eliminate head buffeting but the adjustments are very sensitive. Very little movements of the flap makes a difference at hwy speeds. It would be nice if the flap had detents in the adjustment.

Did not try that....I either opened or closed it.

What made you decide on Klock Werks? And how did you handle getting the mounting bracket?

I have not checked, does Klock Werks come with the mounting bracket or did you buy them from MoCo?

I found the Klock Werks shield on another forum's classifieds. It was complete with all the brackets. Complete Road King full size shields are readily available. I was not particularly looking for the Klock Werks but I like the looks of it. It has a slight re-curve at the top.

I'm not crazy about mine either,
at 6'- 4" the buffering is a problem and have consider just going with a fairing,
not that it would improve buffering?

I think the splitter works great over the older style windshields but the mail slot is ugly. Adjust it right and it eliminates all the buffering for me.

I am 6'1" and have been using the Road King standard windshield from the start. Buffeting was horrible over 65mph. Only good around town for me. I keep it in the garage for really hot days.

I like it a lot more than the screen I had on my Heritage. I'm 5ft 8, it works well. You have to adjust it, a little makes a big difference. Tells you in the hand book the best starting point. Still get wind, but no buffeting

I, like most, loved the look of the wind splitter but also had problems with wind at speeds over 80. So I bought a Memphis shades windshield set up with all black mounting hardware and the bottom half of the shield blacked out. I believe it's called a nightshades version and it's 17 inches tall. So far so good.

I ditched the factory wind deflector for a standard "old school" Road King windshield.
At 6' 4", the helmet buffetting was severe at highway speeds regardless of the position of the deflector inside the mailbox slot. I think the design concept is logical and the slot/deflector would be beneficial for "the average bear"...

What is the height of the windshield in your picture?

I'm 6"0", and recently purchased a standard RK 22" windshiled, but it's too tall.

What is the height of the windshield in your picture?

I used kit # 57994-94 (windshield Assembly, standard height) which I believe is 19".
I can see well above it and the wind still goes over the helmet.

I'm 6"0", and recently purchased a standard RK 22" windshiled, but it's too tall.

Went with a 20 in standard mount Klockwerks. Loved it. Currently running a 20" LRS and waiting for some scratches so I can go back to Klock...........crotch rocket shield is in attic forever.

I have never been able to adjust the buffeting out with the vent.  I know small adjustment make a big difference, but at 6'1" the buffeting is always there.

That said, I still am using the wind splitter, just because I do not like the looks of the big billboard shields.  I have just over 15K miles on the bike, and just live with the buffeting.

At something between 5 feet 8 and 9, I find it perfect. The vent flap has to be in the right position. Just a little move in either direction and you feel and hear the difference, but when it's right it's great. I rode a Heritage for years and only used the shield when the temp was under 50. The windsplitter looks like it should be too low, but I guess the shape sends most of the wind over my head, with just enough breeze to keep me cool. It seems that guys over 6 feet can't use it. Maybe H-D needs to make one an inch or two taller. The old classic style that looks fine on a standard King just doesn't seem right for the CVO.

I am 5' 10" and found the stock windsplitter to be waaaaay to noisey. I went with a long ride shields replacement.

Cat Eye, which handlebars do you have? Height? Looks great.

FWIW I'm 6'-1" and really like the Windsplitter, when I get the vent adjusted right for me, puts the wind at the top of my helmet. Maybe I slouch more than others in the seat.

Cat Eye if you decide another route and want to sell the Windsplitter, let me know.

Still deciding on the windshield and will keep you in mind is I choose to loose the Windsplitter.

the new Klockworks 20" should be on the door step when I get home
taking the factory windshield off
at 17" tall is just way to short for me being 6' 3"
so hopefully this will help big time
so smiling while riding last Sunday or my teeth would of ended up looking like rest of the bike!

hope I read all of the other post and the description on the shield correctly,
that it's just a remove and replace using factory brackets?

will let you know tomorrow!

Sorry to tell you this but unless Klockwerks has came out with something new your factory CVO Road King Windsplitter brackets are not going to work. You are going to need some standard Road King brackets. I purchased some used brackets off of EBay and installed the new plastic on them. The standard brackets do match up to the mounting points on the bike.

X2 Absolutely right.

I was sceptical on this wind splitter shield when I first saw it on my Cvo king (sold now..boo hoo!)
As on my heritage and RK Classic the first thing to come off was the windshield and was never put back on till I sold it as both never worked for me and used to shake my head like a jackhammer!
however I percievered with the wind splitter and at 5"11" once you adjust the "vane" on it so you are looking exactly at it its absolutely perfect and gave me almost zero buffeting up to 85mph ..well pleased I was.
One thing I will say the type of helmet you wear makes a huge difference, I wear a full face helmet most of the time and this being more aerodynamic helps more than open face, half helmets or especially those that don't have visors.
My advice as like Puma said also, percervere with it a bit and adjust the vane till it's right ,try different helmets if you can , cause I think it's a great windshield and looks good too! :bananarock:

thanks T-Roy for the help / suggestions, I think I even came accross both of those in my endless search today before I called my guy at the dealer
got allot into this prestine bike and used, "slightly scratched"
so after talking to parts dept. HD I'm to stop in tomorrow and look at the options using the KW windshield I got which they agree is better than MS
bottom line it's $400 to do the change, better for me now than the $2500 to do the fairing dream

with your part number provided I was able to walk into the dealer again
and get the right swap that was in stock!
took all of about 15 minutes to do the swap!
and being a quick release I can always put the factory shield right back on!

You are welcome Bromebe. You are going to see a huge difference on the highway! Like you I kept the stock CVO shield handy. I personally only use it for around town riding in the summer.

Bromebe, I was looking at your picture again and, for some reason, yours looks higher than mine. It might be the way the picture was taken. Should be the same if you used the same part number. Let us know how it feels after a few 100 miles...
I know it stills work great for me!

it is 22"!
a little taller that I wanted but might of needed anyway being 6'-3"

the kit was very reasonable

as I walked in to get it the GM talked to me more about the swap and told me about another employee of theirs that had a Road King
with a Freedom shield on his
http://freedomshields.net/rider_windshield_review.php?id=102

a replacement shield, meaning
the full kit I needed anyway
just for the hardware and it was cheaper to buy the complete kit
than buying / finding and buying the mounting hardware separate
so
I'll use this one for a while see if I'm looking over or thru like your suppose to
and then later look into this
Freedom shield
they are also tinted and have more contour like the factory shield

That is what I thought. Mine is a 20, not a 22. You always have that option. Sure works for me...

couldn't stand it or help myself
and haven't even had a chance to ride the bike with the new shield to see if it is to tall!
it's just the more I looked at it as is on the bike the more it just did not turn me on!

so ordered the Freedom replacement shield tinted at 20"

I'm going to have a wall of Shields if I don't watch out!

Considering your height I am quite sure you will like the 20". You should be able to see over it and greatly improve the wind flow.
Good luck!

This 2014 road king is my first cvo. I purchased it about 3 months ago, I really hate the wind splitter, it does nothing to block wind and bugs. Iam trying to find taller and wider shield and tinted without loosing the looks of a beautiful bike.

I really like mine... so not looking to change it for anything else.  But then again, I am 5'7" and shrinking so I would have to stand up on my seat to feel any air turbulence  :D

My '14 CVO Road King has the wind splitter on it and I like it. My road glide used to drive me nuts with the buffeting of my helmet. With the vet set right I get no bulleting with the wind splitter. I have been hit by bugs numerous times but I where a helmet with a shield so it is no big deal. I like feeling the wind to a point. I don't care for the wind I get with no windshield unless I am riding at less than 40 MPH. The wind splitter is just right for me.

I agree with most... the Windsplitter is a God send for me compared to stock windshield.  I had a 2010 Road King and I NEVER used the windshield because of the buffeting.  I was told I could shave it down...but was too afraid of it looking ghetto.  I have the Windsplitter on and use the vent to have the air flow right over the helmet.  Love it!

Play around with the vent...it should make it more comfortable if its right.

Seems to me that anyone under 5'11" might find a way to make it work but at 6' and over the Wind Splitter never gets comfortable. I only use mine around town, never on the highway. I have a standard 20" for that. Since I am almost always on the highway, the Wind Splitter sits in the garage.
FYI, I am 6'1"

I'm 5'11" and have not been satisfied at high speed with the Wind Splitter. I recently located some brackets and will be ordering a Freedom shield... Just not sure about clear or the new medium tint  :nixweiss: leaning clear, I think it looks classy....but I like bromebe's with both the clear and tint.
Hope I'm not letting cat out of bag but I was informed they are almost done with a replacement windshield that uses our current brackets. I may still use the standard brackets just so I can easily swap between the two for long trips.

What do you guys think? Clear or tint on tall shield? I'll still use both.
