Ape hangers for Ultra
« on: July 09, 2015, 08:53:02 AM »

I am thinking about installing ape hangers on my ultra and replacing the mirrors with the fairing mounted mirrors from an SG. So my question is regarding being able to see the rearview through the mirrors with ape hangers. Does anyone have 10 or 12" ape hangers on their SG? If so I would appreciate any info on how it does/does not effect the rearview visibility. I am 6 1" and I'm afraid my arms might block the view.

Thank you in advance.

Don't have a street glide but do have 12 inch monkey bars, don't believe you would be able to see out of fairing mounted mirrors very well.

Haven't ridden a SG with apes but have ridden a SG... I found the fairing mounted mirrors awkward and not very useful (IMO)... but I guess it is all in what you like/get used to. :nixweiss:

But...but...but  that clean look is so sweet! Is functionality as important as looks? ;)

Anyhow I'm on the fence regarding the mirror mod. Still it would be great to get some info from the SG folks with ape hangers before I give up on the idea.

I'm 6', have a 2011 street glide and using LA Choppers, 12" Bagger twin peaks bars.  I'm able to see enough in my mirrors for what I need to see.  Anything else, I'm looking over the shoulder.

13" or 14" would be better, but then your hands are that much higher as well.  With the 12" bars, I've noticed the cooler temps a lot sooner on the hands as I usually ride without gloves when temps allow.  You also get lots of bugs on the break levers and your hands with them higher than the fairing, but hey, I can wash...

Thank you Mike. So as I suspected the arms will get in the way. 14 is too high. So if you had to guess would 10 inch bars make the visibility better or worse?

My '15 SESG w 10" LA Chopper Twin Peaks. Removed fairing mirrors and installed bar mounted mirrors and 7" LRS shield.  I like the look now....

Understood (I have been bitten by that bug (many times) too ;))... I guess I should have added I thought they were a "better" look too until I rode the SG and didn't like the "functionality" of them. :nixweiss:

Functionally there are a few things that I do not want to sacrifice... seeing, or being seen... I couldn't see what was behind me as well w/the fairing mounted mirrors as I could w/the handlebar mounted ones.

My mirrors are functional with my yaffe 10", but I am kinda short. 5'6". I can see what I need to, probably can see better than my buddy who did the same bars and then put the really small yaffe mirrors on his bars.

I prefer the safety of seeing what's behind me or coming up beside me without having to look over my shoulder constantly.   I do love the look with the fairing mirrors but prefer functionality in this case over looks.

My opinion is 10" would rule out fairing mounted.   As others, I wanted the cleaner look as well.  Find the bars you want for comfort level, and if the fairing mirrors don't work, remove them and cover the holes with one of the options available and install brake lever mirrors.   Hand placement was my primary concern as stock bars and the 10" wild one 575's on my old bike were just too low and did not remove the pinching feeling I would get at the top of my shoulders/base of neck.  With my hands nearly level with my shoulders, I don't get any of that pinching any longer.   :jalapeno:

Everyone,

Thank you very much for your feedback. It sounds like I should be thinking 12" ape hangers and fairing mounted mirrors are not an option.

The LA choppers 10's look the best out of all that I have looked at.  riding position looks spot on.
