Excellent post, Van.  The writer's description sounds similar to mine: top end clicking between 2200 to 2700 rpm.  I'm going to try the locktite fix as soon as I have a chance.

The clicking isn't as bad as my last bike, but it's still annoying.  If this works, I'll name my next male offspring after you!

A very good read.  Simple engine, simple fix.  I am looking forward in finding out how this works long term.

I'm thinkin when I pull my motor apart this fall I am going to do the set screw mod to hold the shaft in place. As of right now I have no valve train noise, but we all know that could change at any given time!!!!

It is yet another of the many possible sources of issues not the sole source. Fix it and report back. If you don't see witness marks on the bolt the shafts aren't moving.

Why not Scott

Yeah, why not Scott.  If the goal of participation in an online community of riders is not merely to shill your wares and drive sales in online competition with other vendors but is, instead, to actually participate with and support that community than; why not?  With so many complaining of valve train noise if such a relatively easy potential solution were in your back pocket why not mention it?

Of course...
Well with all the miracle solutions I have heard over the years, such as shimming and lifter preload at a "special" prescribed amount and that "special" oil that will fix valve train noise,  I am a bit skeptical but still will pin them on my own bike and will share how that's done with photos of the machining.

I can't help but find it amusing when people come up with these magical answers to noisy Harley engines.  One guy will swear that he transformed his clattery bike that sounded like something with a million miles on it into a nearly silent wonder, by just changing the oil from brand X to brand Y.  Then we have the folks who don't change the oil brand, but they dump in some snake oil additive and quote all the lies on the product web page as proof the stuff is magic in a bottle.  Then we have the folks who tell us to take a lifter designed to operate with the plunger centered in the bore and instead crank the pushrod out until the plunger is nearly bottomed out.  Others tell us we need to eliminate all the side play in the rockers, others tell us to tighten up the valve guide to stem clearance, and now we find we need to lock the rocker shaft with heavy duty locking adhesive so it can't budge.

Let me clue you in on the REAL solution to a noisy Harley engine:  turn off the ignition!
